Halloween, the perfect time to start a knives appreciation topic :grin:

Show us your favorite pumpkin carvers, sushi slashers your bushcraft knife, the set you woodcut with, the first pocket knife your dad gave you that you now decades later stil carry, pocket knife, self defense knife, your sets of bayonettes, your Katana, claymore, langioule, the ka-bar of your dad - whichever blades you wish to display.

These are my main set:





The Fallkniven F1 is for utility, the Kai for the kitchen (superb blade!), the Fairbairn-Sykes is my altar's Athame (ritual dagger) and the wakizashi and tanto are for honor related purposes (real men own a sword :wink:)

Here the bunch of them are, glistening with Choji oil.

Show us the mighty and mundane, brutal and unusual, practical and tactical and what have you not.

Niiice set! Which is your favorite?

For me and my set, the Master Tanto. Everything about it is perfect and you practically couldnt drop it if you wanted to.

Most practical use are my utility Fallkniven for mostly cutting up boxes etc and my kitchen Kai (I never had a bough knife come as sharp as that, save for razorblades.

These are just my folders that I've carried at some point (with the exception of the tiny fixed blade top right). I've got a whole mess more machetes and fixed blades and folders I don't use.

My first knife is the 11th from the left on top row if you want to bother counting. My father gave it to me when I was 5 or 6. Usa made Schrade Uncle Henry stockman. Surprised I still have it.

Exact same knife I've had since like 10 but my second one; the knife is slightly different than the original one and the Phillips screwdriver has some of the sides hollowed out.

Knife/pliers that saw me through boy scouts, my adolescence, homelessness, 3 colleges, and 4 cities over about 20 years.

I don't hate that knife. I have the BG with the flint that attaches to the case. The blade seems to hold a respectable edge and the flint has saved my ass in very cold, backwoods camping situations where lighters and camp stoves work poorly as gas volatility is significantly reduced. Recently I even started batoning with it to split wood and it held up quite well. Don't get me wrong, it's a cheap knife for sure, but I would not be using my better knives to baton large pieces of hardwood.

Nice blades Lector!


Given the blade style chances are you would probably LOVE the Fallkniven F1





Its a legit Swedish Air Force fighter pilot knife, so a modern combat knife. It has VG10 steel sandwiched inbetween softer steel, its convex (opposite to a straight razor) so it has a LOT of blade strength, people use it for bushcraft, literally stick it between two stones and use it as a step-up. Very good all-weather grip.

Amanita, I showed mine with the cutting edge facing upwards, as thats the proper way to handle swords of a Daisho.


Here's a Fairbarirn-Sykes Fighting Knife, this one made by Nowill & Son of Sheffield, UK, a military knife designed to stab lethally in trenches and other hand combat in WW II, but has since been used extensively by special teams etc, and is the only style of knife that actually has a NATO catalogue number:

I use mine on my altar, ritually, but it would be a very good blade for personal defense.

Lector, that orange esee looks like it's been sharpened quite a bit more than the other. Always good to see so much use on a blade. I been thinking about picking up a smaller fixed blade to carry on me during the day.

Amanita, about how big is that knife of yours? That's a real gorgeous blade. Does that unfinished antler provide a good grip?

Asante, I've always been a big fan of those war era daggers. The v42 and the marine raiders stiletto were based on the Fairbairn. Some of the marines favored rounding the thin tips of their knives because they had a problem with them sticking into bones inside of their combatants. Little fun fact for y'all. Gorgeous piece as well.

The blade is a little over 4 inches give or take.  The handle works perfect.  The antler came off the first buck my pops shot so he made blades for my brother and I.  I got the right antler so if you imagine riding a deer like a horse the curve of the antler goes perfect with your grip and the shape/texture of it makes it so even if blood or water gets on it your hand wont slide.

And so far I have never used it.

Amanita, those paraframes are good little beaters. I know a couple folks who carry those a lot, one of which is a real old model that's seen better days. It's really cool seeing all the years of abuse, I need to snap a photo of it.

That's really awesome that your pops (father of grandfather?) made those blades! I knew they were handmade, but by family is even better. I imagine he burned the tang in? You need to ask if he'll make another if I send an antler to y'all!

Hex, that Mora IS a real nice knife. You honestly couldn't ask for much more. Their carbon steel is unparalleled, especially for the money. Is it one of the red handled ones?

You can really get sucked into the different blade steels, and handle materials, and the historical significance of different blade designs, and their uses. I've spent my fair share of money on knives in all price ranges. But at the end of the day, a knife is a tool, and it's only use is to cut things, and they all do it more or less equally. I've found that the novelty is gone with the ones I've got, and I plan on selling most of them. I'm keeping a few that I use the most, and a couple sentimental ones that'll sit in a drawer and that's it.

Your red handled mora is going to do anything and everything you ask of it, and you'll more than likely have it the rest of your life. If you're content with it, be content! And with time, that Mora is gonna be worth more to YOU, than the $400 folder that some guy got because of the marketing of tolerances and blade materials and all the rest of that crap.

Keep it oiled, and keep it dry. You can use vegetable oil if your going to have it around food, or the fat from cutting meat. If you're just running around outside with it, a drop of 3in1 works fine. But food grade is always best, just in case.

Carbon steel develops a patina, which is that grey/black corrosion you'll see on older knives. This is perfectly fine and is going to prevent the metal from rusting. Orange is bad, black/grey is good.

You can force a patina, which some folks will do with various acids, or food products, like sticking the blade in a potatoe for a few hours. This gets the patina started for you and you can get some cool results. But if you just cut some food with it you'll build a patina naturally over time. Up to you.

But that's it really, just keep it oiled, dry, and sharp, and you'll have that thing forever.

That Mora is a scandi grind, you know what to do to sharpen it properly?

What a badass little "stabber". Would you elaborate on how you hold it though? It seems like you'd put your finger through the hole and grasp it in your fist like a knuckle duster, am I right?


Hex, I think that's something you'll have to research on your own, but your definitely going to want to get a whetstone if you don't already have one. There's a whole lot to explain about edge bevels and sharpening that I would rather not do here, especially when there's a ton of videos already explaining it much better than I ever could!

My father.  He got the knives made by someone else from the point the antlers were removed from the deer.  I wish he knew knife making because that would mean I do to.  I’ll ask him who made it and pass that info along to you, he apparently has ‘options’ because my pops got a letter stamped in the blade and a symbol engraved into the butt of the antler so it may be like a tattoo scenario where ya’ll just bullshit and whatever you agree on is what it is.

As far as those paraframes they’re like custom fit for me.  There’s a big one and a small one and the big one seemed ackward for me.  The little one tucks away perfect and Gerber’s been good since the old days.  My first knife was actually a Gerber lockback my dad gave me.:cookiemonster:

I like to cut things.  look what I did to my hand today.  crime scene

I sharpen most stuff on a bench grinder and get things razor sharp, I'm lucky I didnt whack it clean off.

I have a pretty big collection of ceremonial swords, and knives... from daily carry to survival/tactical and ornamental type ones.    I bought this one when I got my advanced open water certification (scuba).

been collecting knives since i was a wee kid.

my gigantic leatherman surge has been my daily carry for the last 13 years.  i've chopped down a 4" diameter tree using it and a rock while i've also repaired a pair of $200 glasses with it. 



it's dangerous to carry on board a boat, though, because the thing is so heavy it would deliver me to davy jones' locker with the quickness if i went overboard.

i have a very similar one from my dad's time after he was in the navy.  i also have his all stainless USN marked knife that is both very stabby and slicey as the pointy blade doesn't lock.

This is a cavalry sabre and it’s missing it’s scabbard.  It was made in Solingen Germany and imported for the Civil War.  These were used by both sides and I have no provinence on it either way.  My dad bought it from an auction house in Ohio.

i've found three of those pommels while relic hunting.  two are slightly crushed from being stepped on by a horse or similar, but one is in great condition.  my buddy found that exact hand guard but the piece that protects the back of the hand is broken where it attaches to the front of the guard.

edit: i also have a real nice pommel that is cast to look like a lion's head.  the sword it was on belonged to a confederate officer.

Im glad you like it.  I’ll have dig out my Dads old collection of third Reich blades.  I have 4 or 5 I think in the attic.

This is the knife he carried while working in the uranium mine in Grants NM(70s).

Ok, first off I don’t affiliate with this stuff in any kind of political way.  These were gifts from my father an avid collector and history/prehistory buff.  He has a doctorate in Archeological Geology from UNC at Chapel Hill.  He has carted me to see some of the most impressive collections of historic and prehistoric items both private and in institutions of education and government.  I’ve been in the vaults of Belize and Duke University and held things that I could work my whole life and never afford to purchase.  Anyways



One is a parade bayonet the grey and blue tassel indicates who would have carried it.  I believe it was a firefighter.

One is a youth knife.

Then the 2 daggers.  One with green scabbard was from an officers academy.  They were issued to the cadets.  The other I was told was an SS dagger but I thought those had that marking and on black handles. 

The crosses were issued to mothers of fallen soldiers.  The others are pieces of uniforms.

I am under the impression that all these are GI bring backs, but there are lots of forgeries of the daggers floating around.

To be honest I don’t really care enough about this stuff to do any real research on it.  Hell I keep it on the attic so the kid doesn’t stumble on it.

Whoa, two Hiterjugend knives, the ultimate knife of corruption. A shiny knife given to youths to entice them to join the standing army of Evil of their day. It was used by the Nazis to corrupt youths into becoming their cannon fodder, luring them with promises of shiny things into what we now know happened.

Its the inverse counterpart of the Fairbairn-Sykes Fighting Knife which I showed earlier, thats on my altar. The two are as sworn enemies as two nonmagically forged knives can be. (nothing like a Kris though, which ARE, if you must get one of those get one fored for you only, never second hand - they are almost always hexed)


One of my spirit guides told me years back that a Hitler Youth Knife would be given to me at one point for the purpose of ritually decommissioning it as part of the process of Europe coming to terms with the legacy of the Third Reich. Spiritual/magical/alchemistic stuff.


Be careful with those blades and regalia, they exert an attraction to lots of people, but some very sinister ones among them. Should you get offers in PM about them, make dead sure to check the reputation of whomever offers what for it.


As a spiritual practitioner I believe everything consists of spirit and spirit of actions and intentions can cling to it. The kitchen knife with which I decapitated a chicken for spiroit purposes as well as christmas dinner, stands apart from lets say my favorite veggie slicer.

Knives that have killed, or which were made for sinister or lofty purposes, carry charges that enanate from them, this also in the same vein of superstition of the swordsmen of old.


Since we're in Knives Of Our Lives, here's my favorite veggie slicer, a Kai Shun hand forged damascus steel classic chef knife, together with the very last carrots and radishes of my potted garden, before frost set in:






Regarding your collection though, I'm not at all at home in world war regalia etc but I wouldnt be surprised if the whole collection put together there is worth well over $1000, and very likely multiples of that, for the right buyer.

Unfortunately the right buyer is quite often the wrong buyer, so watch out in getting rid of it if you sell it. They're things thart were killed over and many people still are willing to kill over them, including the seller to save the expense.

A museum would seem appropriate.

I wouldn’t sell any of this stuff.  His collection includes almost every handgun used in WWII(43 I think).  Minus the Liberator a single shot dropped behind the lines in France and weird Russian one that was made the last year of the war.  I also have a Japanese prayer flag framed. 

The whole collection will stay together for the foreseeable future.

My grandpa had one of those flags on the wall my whole life and when he passed my brother took possession of it.

My brother sent it to the Obon Society to check it out and they said it was a forgery made by Japanese citizens to sell or trade to US GI's.

He donated it to them.

Its a legit Swedish Air Force fighter pilot knife, so a modern combat knife. It has VG10 steel sandwiched inbetween softer steel, its convex (opposite to a straight razor) so it has a LOT of blade strength, people use it for bushcraft, literally stick it between two stones and use it as a step-up. Very good all-weather grip.

Yes, the orange one I use at work in a warehouse where it gets used a lot and dropped countless times. So needless to say it's seen stones more than I'd like, repairing it from hitting the concrete (once off a scissor lift). I tried a folder for a day and went back to a fixed blade because it's easier for me to reach and quicker because of muscle memory.

A RESPECTFUL APPROXIMATION OF CHOJI OIL

In maintaining a Daishō of Katana - Wakizashi - Tanto the Japanese use a weapon oil called Choji oil. This Choji oil often comes in little bottles for big prices, and it of course matters which family made the blade and which family made the oil but - for less traditional people lacking the precise nuances that come with maintaining a Daisho properly, or who own swords not of Japan or blades of other types entirely, Choji oil is alluring but, rather costly, and in many cases overshoots the mark, perhaps like pouring champagne into a styrofoam cup.

So, an alternative to Choji oil.

Choji oil is best defined as mineral oil containing 1/100 to 1/10 of its volume of essential oil of cloves.

One should strive for perfection in the details in important matters, so the oil base is best procured as pharmaceutical (human or veterinary) grade liquid paraffin. Essential oil of cloves, likewise, is readily obtained, so combining the two in proper proportion (1-10%) in essence would produce a passable substitute for Choji oil.

Go beyond the generic, however.

Since you're making homemade Choji oil, it should be "of the house", in other words, distinctive.

Since you will be making the oil for maintaining the blades of your family, which includes kitchen knives (hence, pharmaceutical grade paraffin oil - honor your blade and yourself with the finest ingredients, foodgrade and up) it needs a bit more than the combination of liquid paraffin and clove oil.

Is there a flower in particular, that has relevance to you or your family? If so, add a fraction of the essential oils of these flowers relative to the clove oil, so that the clove oil remains the main additive to the carrier oil, which is the liquid paraffin.

If there are very specific flowers you wish to include (such as one of a wedding bouquet, flowers from the family garden or even, a flower from the casket of a deceased relative) one can soak the flower whole in the paraffin for a week in the dark to extract its essence into the paraffin, then retrieve the flower and add the clove oil and minor essential oil additives to complete the Choji oil.

Choji Oil must be kept in glass, pottery or metal, in the dark, in a cool place of stable temperature, such as a basement, and should have an indefinite shelf life that way.

Make sure to not use essential oils that stain, and if the Choji Oil is to be used for weaponry with precision moving parts, such as firearms, make sure that your process of manufacture doesn't taint the oil with small particles, for smooth operation.

When a Katana or Wakizashi is drawn, there is a faint, unique fragrance that is released, sharpening the senses, which to the warrior wielding the weapon is an important sensory cue. This is afforded by the odorific components of the Choji oil, and is a true delight in weapons handling.

In addition, the clove oil acts as a local anesthetic so that the choji oil not just honors the sword and the one wielding it, but also honors the flesh of the opponent which it severs. Honorable behavior goes in al directions, so make sure to honor your Choji oil, itself, by making it the finest you can make it.

Most people the world over never oil their blades, with properly made Choji oil, at least your eye and nose will appreciate the gesture, and with a refined scent of personal significance, it will add reward to the task of maintaining your blades.

My daily carry is  Kershaw Ken Onion Leek matte black

First time I opened it the spring in the speed open was so strong and the light oil caused it to flip out of my hand and stab into my thigh while I was sitting at the desk

Here's my Tac-Force Napoli with rainbow finish, glistening fragrantly with Choji blade Oil which did a great job on assisting the assisted opening with some needed lubrication.

I removed the belt clip on the back, as you definitely wouldnt wear this on your belt or CC it where I live!

Contrary to its Italian Stiletto looks, its an assisted opening knife, you flick it with your finger which is just as easy, with the added bonus of being a legal blade in my jurisdiction as opposed to an illegal one.
For ease if use it makes no real difference.

Sturdy design, nice liner lock, first Ti-anodized knife I ever owned, comes in 440 Stainless, point's almost as pointy as my Fairbairn-Sykes, edge is fairly sharp for a cheap, factory sharpened tool, its 100% stainless steel, no aluminum quickies were pulled, very sturdy, lanyard-holesd pommel would be good as a yawara.

Evening y’all,

So, went looking for my Arkansas whetstones, and found some cool shit I forgot I had.

First off the whetstones.  I had a whole set of these at one point. A total of four.  I could only find this one.



As far as I’m concerned one can get to better sharpening stones.

Ok now the cool stuff. 

This is a preindustrial era cutlery set from Japan.  The chopsticks are bone and the scabbard ray skin.  The knife has a tanto point.



This is a Burmese Dha knife.  Unfortunately the scabbard has been lost.  The handle is elephant ivory and the blade about 10 inches.  The bolster is silver.  Judging by the patina of the ivory I’d say it’s at least 100 years old probably more like 150.
