Oh no what's this thing in my jar?!
    #25578958 - 10/30/18 02:59 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

I was just about to g2g with this wbs jar and I noticed this yellowish spot. Is it normal?

Here's a view of the whole jar. Spot in question is at the top of the bottom quarter.

Can I carry on or am I screwed?

Normal. Just harmless metabolites. That jar looks almost over-colonized though (which can cause metabolites to form)

I'd use that jar asap or refrigerate it until you're ready to use it

Rodger. I was just waiting a couple days for this last clump at the top that's holding out. I'll g2g right away.

Thanks much.

While I've got you here, I noticed the same thing at the very bottom of another jar I was going to use as a master. They're smaller though. At 4, 5, 6 and 8 o'clock.

I'd guess the jar is 96% colonized?

G2g asap? Or wait a day or 2 for it to get to 100%

Did you shake at 30%? The jar does have a ice cream look to it, which can indicate bacteria, and the uncolonised areas are a worry if you have already shaken it

Yes I shook at 30%. Will bacteria make itself known beyond a doubt if I wait? Should I spawn it to a shoebox or just throw it out?

I's spawn it to a shoebox with coir and see what you get; chucking it away before trying would be a waste, but you might want to see if the last bits colonise before you do it

It's colonizing. Should be done by the end of the day. Still thinking shoebox or would you roll the dice and g2g?

Is the top of the jar that ice cream look you  mentioned?

Personally I'd give it at least another 4-5 days, to ensure that its fully colonised, as if you spawn it and there are even minute amounts that aren't it'll provide a vector to contaminate. There's no rushing this hobby, patience is key.

I'd spawn it to a shoebox and then clone the best fruit\cluster, take that to agar, make new jar and then G2G that and do monos. I think its a bit of a wasted effort using MS directly for monos as it usually gives fairly poor results, whereas clones will give you much more consistency

Cool, I'm not in a rush. This is my middle jar. I've got one ahead of it that I g2g'd yesterday and one behind this that I went a2g a week ago. There's not a ton of pressure on this one to preform. Like you say, I'd be happy with a few candidate fruits to clone from.
