. i recently came across a big patch of poppies. i wanted to see if anyone here could help me i.d. the strain. the flowers are light red almost pink with a black spot at the bottom of the pettal. the seeds inside the pod are white and gooey, they look like they are still developing? the plant were about 3 to 3 1/2 ft. tall and pods ranging from dime size to golf ball size. and there were about 5-10 pods per plant. i went ahead and scored about 15 of the pods and hardly got any goo from it, about a match head size amout, if even that. i got one ok hit, and definatley felt a pleasnt effect. not too intense though. im still feeling pretty relaxed. i was greatly dissapointed by that amount of latex that came out of the pods. oh yeah, the petals had fell off most of the pods and thier crowns were turning upwards. i would appreciate any help.

you're supposed to scratch them and make them drip goo while they're in the ground I believe
but the easiest way would just be for you to make a tea of like 3-5 pods. If they're really weak I guess you could use more too. Just be careful with ODs!

You got to scracth the pod just right and at the right time to get a decent amout of opium. It soundslike they were opium poppies since they couldnt have been californians and I dont think any other kinds will give you a buzz. I think it would be pretty hard to overdose on opium gum.

the opium poppy(papaver somniferum)isnt the only poppy that contains some opium compounds. The california poppy(which isnt even in the poppy family)has some ingredients in its latex that will give you a narcotic like buzz. Also there are some other papaver plants that will drip out a latex in which you can score some opium chemicals from them also,if Im not mistaken. Wait till someone else like neuro or alkaloidholic replies, they know much more than me! Peace, PF~

if you could describe the stems and leaves it'd help to ID them better.

there were a few small hairs on the stems leading up to the pods. the pods are usually a little wider than tall. the leaves are big and wide, reminds me of the weeds that grow really big and stalky in alot of lawns, that have the points on the ends of the leaf. i really dont know how else to describe them.

go to poppies.org to see what it is. they have pictures of all different poppies but mostly papaver somniforum. the color of the flower petals don't mean much. opium pops have so many different colored flowers it's ridiculous and so do other poppies. go by the leaves and pods. there is another type of poppy that has similar pods but the leaves are totally different. the pods are about the size of a golf ball or maybe a lil smaller and have a bluish/gray dusty coating them. they also have the definitive crown a top. completely round or slightly ovalish. the leaves are wide and have jagged sides to them. they too may take on a dusty appearance towards maturatity. do some research because you can only go so much by a typed description. there are many good books on opium and websites covering this topic.....a book that helped me gain some knowledge about opium is 'Opium For The Masses' by Jim Hogshire (i believe that's the author). peace
