Crumbly cakes withing the jars
    #2557524 - 04/14/04 12:23 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I knocked up a few BRF jars on 3/21 and a few of them are colonizing reasonably well, except for the fact that it seems their growth has become seriously stalled, and also the uncolonized cake within is so lose that it kind of tumbles around if I turn the jars upside down. Should I have tamped down the mixture more? Could this because they have dried out (which may account for the stalling to)? I was thinking about injecting a few cc's of sterile water into the jars but would like a little more advice before proceeding.

do they look dry?
--while the myc is growing, you should notice an increase of water on the insides of the jar. (at least i did)
are they in an incubator? near 86F? are they being kept in the dark?
did you follow your tek correctly?

my reccommendation.
remove any tape that you have over the holes in your lids.
turn the jars upside down. they should start back up, as the CO2 drains out of the jars.

If it is crumbling like that, it could be too dry. And, injecting sterile water has worked in the past. If you decide to try it, it won't hurt as long as you are sterile and you are careful about how much water you inject.
