im falling in love with jazz
    #2548783 - 04/11/04 02:16 PM (20 years, 9 days ago)

So ive been taking this class this semester, kind of a history of jazz, starting with NO jazz and moving all the way into the early 50s.

Now im totally hooked, hes given us a bunch of mp3s, but thats just not going to do it.

My favorite definately is saxophone.

So now, to the point of this thread :P

i need suggestions on good albums to buy. I really love Charlie Parker, Benny Goodman, Dave Brubeck, and Dizzy Gillespie. Any ideas? Even if just albums by those artists.

Thanks in advance!

If you want to get into some modern jazz, I highly recommend Charlie Hunter.

All my jazz is on vinyl and I only have full LPs of staples like Coltrane and Miles. A bunch of singles and live compilations at Birdland(any live session at Birdland is sick). Check out Horace Silver and Art Blakey. The label to check is Blue Note, you can't go wrong.

im right there with ya man
...everyday when I get off work I go right to Jazz 89.5..its sooo relaxing ..great for tripping to
its revolutionized the way I play music..especially guitar.

I dont know to many artists other than the big names,
I suggest either listening to your local jazz station, and picking up some names,
or maybe look for a jazz forum..

kind of blue is the best jazz album of all time. if you're still into the early years, find the opera Porgy & Bess as performed by ella fitzgerald and louis armstrong. but, i suggest you go full steam into the bebop years. to me, there never has been and never will be a music that compares to bebop jazz. a lot of people on this board talk about the raw emotion in metal music and hardcore, but nne of it can touch the fire of a quintet all fired up steaming through some straight ahead bop.

look for the first incarnation of the miles davis quintet featuring Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, and John Coltrane..... quite possibly the best grouping of musician for a recording ever.

its a shame we dont have any of the minton's recordings where dizzy, bird, miles, ray brown, and philly joe were all up on a tiny stage playing there asses off..... i could go on forever. hit me up in irc if you need some more info.

yeah what im specifically asking about is more bebop type stuff, thanks auto.

Like i said, Charlie Parker is my definite favorite, and i love it when he and dizzy get together. So i think i'll be focusing more there than in the other stuff.

Kind of Blue was suggested to my class by our jazz professor, and im thinking about pickin that up.

THanks all

Thought you'd like him? Did you know that Charlie Hunter was a student of Joe Satriani? Also, he designed his own instrument with 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings, and thus plays guitar and bass at the same time.

For more modern jazz, check out Medeski Martin and Wood. Or John Scofield.

For crazy nice fusion funky jazz, get the album Headhunters by Herbie Hancock.

To see how far jazz could go check out Bitches Brew or On the Corner by Miles.

I love jazz! :heartpump:

well i ended up making an order, and this is what i got:

Ken Burns Jazz: Charlie Parker, Dave Brubeck, Lester Young
Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool, Kind of Blue, Workin'

ive also picked up a bunch of random other cds like benny goodman quartet, gerry mulligan, another parker, dizzy, konitz, armstrong, and another lester cd.

im about to order some coltrane and a few more...

im lovin it all so much!

thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Oh and krishna, as a sidenote to you. Thought you might be interested. To enter the "Thelonius Monk School of Jazz", the grad school jazz program here at University of Southern California, you have to play in front of herbie hancock...how fucking stressful would that be!!!

I saw them perform with wayne shorter, great show!
