coming out of retirement, need advice
    #25576504 - 10/29/18 02:06 PM (6 years, 2 months ago)

hello all! it's been a minute for me but i want to start again.
i have a few questions. i am planning on doing monotubs but i cant find the brand of wbs i used in the past and i am not sure what to get, someone suggested popcorn but i have never used that.

i also have issues with wbs. i never know when it's ready, how do you tell? i usually over boil it or under boil it.

can anyone suggest some brand of wbs or something that will work well?

every time i've tried in the past year it takes my jars over two weeks to start colonizing.

If you want to use WBS most would say avoid cracked corn because it gets starchy and also sunflower seeds because it's not very nutritious. Any brand with the least amount of those two.

You could try this Tek

As for brand I couldn't tell you what I use other than it's cheap and I can get lots of it.

When I first started in bulk it was with WBS and before I read into it at all I bought a 50 pound bag that had both cracked corn and sunflower seed. I went through the whole bag without much trouble so . Since then I've been through a couple hundred pounds of rye and now I'm on a 50lb bag of boats.

Yeah, I get most sunflower seeds out as they float as do the husks and twigs and I take the suet out before I soak. There's not that much corn tbh

I forget who but someone posted a while ago that sunflower is actually not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be. It simply has empty space between the inner walls of the hull and the actual seed, thus making it a waste of space. They still work as spawn just fine. They even posted a fully colonized jar of straight sunflower
:yolo:

Oats is definitely where it's at tho

i agree, i love wbs but 10 bucks for 50lb bag is right for the pocket. wbs can be expensive depending on the brand and location.
