Casing question... monotub
    #25576440 -

After my grain spawn has colonized my Verm/coir substrate I just add a casing layer before pinning takes place?  Can I just use the same verm/coir that I used for substrate or should it be peat/verm/lime like lots recommend?  Thanks!!

This is for a monotub.

Dude, I'm sorry to say you are going to be getting a gazillion different answers. Good luck trying to figure it all out.

I do a psuedocasing, with coir at time of inoculation. Sometimes. Half my monotubs are currently cased. I have seen such a huge variance in casing advice for monotubs, and casing recipes.

Cool. Thanks. That's one down and 99 responses to go. I'm cool with sorting through 100 different takes on the casing issue.

Do a couple of smaller tubs rather than a mono and experiment. See what works well and what fucks up. I find mine fuck up what ever way I do them:shrug:

I like thin pseudo casings at Spawn because it gives the substrate more time to fully colonize before the surface does but sometimes I don't even do that. Casing for the most part is entirely optional.

Tho it does help if you're a picker vs. a cutter. If you do a full on buffered casing with gypsum as an ingredient picking becomes a lot less messy. Pseudo casing as just coir is nice too due to its contam resistance

How about this... just make sure it doesn't dry out...

It doesn't need a casing. If you would like to add one you can add some coir/verm as you used for your sub. If you chose to add one just make sure that it's nice and fluffy and not too thick.

However, if you live in an arrid climate, and or its winter, the rh of your growing environment can be quite low.  Under these circumstances, a casing layer does help yo ensure a nice pin set. My recommendation would be to put down an actual casing layer instead of a psuedo one.  They have an elevated ph to ward off nasties.  I like to use jiffy mix.  Just add water and pasteurize for 1 hour.

For what he's doing that's highly unnecessary.

OP, the FAE of your mono will determine how fast your sub drys out. With higher the fae is you just need to keep more of an eye on it and you'll probably have to mist it a few times.

I used to make an actual casing for everything using peat but now I only do that for PE.

Everything else I just put a layer of coir/verm on top. I don't think the term "pseudo-casing" works well to describe using coir/verm as a casing. Whether you apply it at spawning or at 100% colonization. I like to apply my CV thick enough that it acts as a casing by providing a humid microclimate at the surface of the substrate.

OP, if you feel like prepping a full-on peat-based casing, by all means... have at it.

Cubes don't need a casing unless you are really unable to provide a proper environment in your fruiting chamber (due to dry climates, winter time, etc). Also, coir is very nutritive and therefore mycelium will start to colonize it to the surface, in which case its no longer cased is it? A casing layer shouldn't be colonized, but rather a non-nutirive layer that can proved the right micro-climate for the bulk sub to pin successfully. Peat/verm  is better since it is less nutritive and less likely to colonize before pins form. But it needs to be PH balanced.

In four years of growing,I have come to avoid casing layers. I spawn my cakes into a combo of cow poo, coir, verm, and gypsum that is hydrated to field capacity and pasteurized. I keep my fruiting chamber at 98% RH with lots of FAE. This produces wonderful, full flushes with no casing layer.

My understanding was that it isn't which is what makes it a good sub material since contaminants find it harder to get started before the mycelium can colonize it.

IF placed thick enough coir/verm can act as a casing layer by providing a humid microclimate that aides in primordia formation.

But if this top layer is fully colonized before pinning begins then it is no longer acting as a casing layer but more of an extension of the substrate, so to speak.

Coir is a source of nutrition, however it's locked away and inaccessible for the most part due to a high lignin content. To say that coir is non-nutritious is incorrect. We use it for moisture retention, and to the preference of some, topping subs in the manner of casing. If one cooks their coir more than the usual sterilization timeframe used amongst the community, this helps to break down that lignon barrier and allows the rest of the contents to be digested by the myc. Generally people do not do this nor keep subs around long enough for the myc to go to work on it, therefore it is widely and incorrectly considered non-nutritious. Not to discredit all that has been said about casings in this thread thus far, just need to point out the facts.

To OP;
In my recommendation, you can easily practice your casing techniques using what you have listed. Buffered peat is considered the general, traditional casing; However, coir/verm is usable. The addition of lime helps the fruiting surface, for the myc prefers an alkaline material to fruit from. Lime/calcium carbonate are the typical additives to achieve this; I have used the combination of the two with great success as lime is a more immediate pH adjustment and calcium carbonate is a light buffer that affects over time when compared to lime. If you choose to use lime, make sure you use lime that is safe for the myc with a low magnesium content, as a percentage above 2% it will burn it/retard pin formation. I recommend this brand

Casings are beneficial but not necessary to produce great results. Many cultivators prefer to not have the additional work and have refined their personal techniques to have great success without it, that is why you'll see so many supporters of non-casing and people telling you to not even bother. I say do what you want and ultimately learn from what you do
