Water droplets on cake in sgfc

Hey all, this is my first attempt with growing and I’ve run into some trouble.

This morning (13 hours ago) I found I had a few water droplets on my cake. I’ve stopped fanning and tried to increase FAE by fanning more and giving my FC more space. The droplets have a yellow tinge to them - from research I’m assuming this is metabolites from the mycelium fighting off bacteria? There’s still water droplets on my cake now, what should I do? I know the water will invite contams, is it already too late or can I salvage these? I seem to have a decent amount of pins so far.  I’ve posted a link to the picture. Any help would be appreciated.

I should mention the last two days were 30 degrees here, so the heat may not have helped? I might move it into a temperature controlled room if that will help. Thanks in advance

Droplets on a cake is normal, you should be directly misting it anyway..Evaporation is the primary cause of pinning. Just ensure you have a decent amount of FAE and mist again when the cake looks dry, usually once a day is enough. You want to try and maintain around 18-25c ideally

Thanks for the reply. There was also a little bit of water collected at the bottom on the foil. It was cloudy yellow, that would be metabolites right? Should I carefully wipe off with a paper towel or just leave it? The droplets also have the yellow tint to them. The pins seem happy enough though? I probably have 20~ on the cake at the moment.

If I put the FC on a room with indirect/ambient lighting and with an aircon running about 25° would that be better? I’ll put the FC out of the way of the aircon so it doesn’t dry them out. Thanks again, and sorry if these are silly questions, but better safe than sorry!

For your foil, poke some pin holes in it, so then any water drains through to the perlite they are sitting on etc..you don't want pooling water that encourages bacteria..Higher temps increase bacteria rates, given they work best the hotter it gets etc..

The only problem perhaps with the air-con is that it dehumidify s the air in the room, and that might dry your cakes out too fast, so if you do keep an eye on them and gently mist when the surface is dry

Okay awesome that’s a great idea. Thank you so much for your help. Hmm I might shift em into said room and leave the aircon off. It’ll be cooler in there and the room is larger.

Sounds like the right idea...good luck, yo should have some fruits to harvest within the week..Don't forget to dunk your cake again 12-18 hours once the first flush has completed:thumbup:

Here’s an update photo - https://imgur.com/a/tdAGC76

I’ve just finished work for the day. The droplets are still there and seem to be running down the cake. They are amber-milky yellow in colour. I haven’t misted in probably close to 48 hours now. Will the fruits of this cake be edible? Or should I just chuck it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If its not drying off it suggests you don't have enough FAE to sustain evaporation essentially, you're SGFC should have hole on all sides?

Yep there’s holes on all sides. Would fruits be safe to eat?

Update:

The only mushroom that’s decent in size has just fallen off my the cake. (It more drooped over and when I touched it, it just came right out)

Is this guy safe to eat?

Yes safe to eat, just dry it out fully first. I'd save it until you have some more to eat at the same time however, as one won't give you anything

Sweet. Drying now. Fingers crossed more fruits come. Will it be worth trying to get another flush? Or should I just get what I can and toss it and start over?

It looked as though you had other pins on the cake, so they should still be growing? If not you can re-dunk the cake for 12 hours or so

All the other pins have seemed to stopped growing/become aborts. The mycelium has a blue/grey tinge which may be bruising but it’s not looking good. I’ll wait til the end of the day to make sure there’s no more growth. The cake still has patches of oozing metabolite looking stuff.

Surely it wouldn’t be worth dunking this cake for another flush? I mean it must be losing the battle to bacterial contam, and already seems to be waterlogged/sweating. Thanks so much for your input and advice. Hopefully I have better results next time!

The blueing of the sub means its drying out. Up to you if you dunk it or chuck it, why not give it a try? The worst that can happen is it comes out and puts out no more fruits

Okay I’ll go another dunk. How long for? I assume I should remove all of the pins? Should I try rinse off the goopy parts?

You want to submerge it in a bowl of water with a plate or weight, something to keep it fully under water. I put mine in the fridge for 18 hours or so. You can leave the pins. The goop will wash off in the bowl, putting it in the fridge helps to make sure the bacteria don't multiply during the soak
