Your opinion on how far along colonization is in my jars.
    #25575052 - 10/28/18 10:49 PM (2 years, 3 months ago)

October 8th 2018 I inoculated my jars. Today is the 28th of October and as scheduled mycelium has grown in said jars, some more prolific than others but all have a large sum of mycelial growth.

I understand that after 100% colonization I should wait about 5-7 days until I take the cakes out and begin my dunk-n-roll techniques.

My question is, how colonized is 100% colonized, I am unsure if some of the vermiculite at the top areas of my jars, that will never become colonized, is just the dry vermiculite acting as a filter or if it is just the last portion waiting to become colonized.

Attached are a few pictures of my jars

This one is the most colonized of the 10 jars. You can see the vermiculite at the top that I mentioned previously.

The jar on the far right is the same as the previous picture, just without a flash.

This last picture is a jar that is the one that is the furthest away from full colonization in the bunch. As you can see there is not a full colonization of mycelium and it is still somewhat transparent.

All in all, I understand that information about waiting 5-7 days after full, white, opaque, mycelium is abundant among these forums.

So I guess I would just like some input on my jars, specifically, and what your opinions are as far as how close to being fully colonized with mycelium they are. I am thankful for any feedback as this is my first grow ever.

I think they're pretty much colonized.

Those look like they're fully colonized to me, as well. That third picture showed some really nice growth! Nice job!

Thank you all for your feedback. You would say that even that last picture that I thought was the least colonized is in-fact fully colonized?

If so, would you say I should begin the waiting period of about 5-7 days to birth them starting now?

Gracias amigos.

I think that third jar look like those strong rhizos are creeping up towards the dry verm layer. I'd give em between 7-10 days. Better to give them more time than not enough when it comes to the consolidation period.

Some people wait the 5-7 days I personally never have. I believe ppl wait the extra couple of days just in case the inside isn't fully colonized yet. I have tested this theory tho and have broken apart cakes the day they reach 100% colonized and everyone was fully colonized on the inside also. U can wait if u want to or u can go ahead start the dunk and roll its up to u.

Gotcha, and if by chance pins form in some of the more "mature" jars is it okay to go ahead and put them into my mono-tub prior to the "late-bloomers" and just put the "late-bloomers" in at a later time?

Will this have any effect on the previously placed "mature" cakes? Or would it be better to just wait until all of them are ready even if it means waiting a little longer on some of the cakes that could've been placed in the monotub earlier.

Thanks.

Okay, I will give the jars one more week (November 4th) until I take one last look at them and decide whether or not to begin my dunk-n-roll.

Thank you gentlemen.

Much love.

I look at this as why keep small substrates out in the open for two weeks when they'll not pin during that time all they will do is dry out and have less water in them when they do fruit. Keeping the substrates in the jar for another 7-10 days and then dunking gives them optimal performance when it's time to fruit (cause of more water available in the cake) you know how some people have to dunk their cakes again after being for 2 weeks in the FC without pinning? Yiu shouldn't have to re-dunk them before the first flush IMO.

Ah understood, I will definitely just take the smart route and be patient and wait another week until I take the cakes out of the jars. I just got another spore syringe in the mail as well so it will be perfect timing for next week since I can inoculate another set of jars while my first set are fruiting in the chamber.

Well gentlemen, I picked 3 cakes of the 10 cakes, dried them, and I have 15 gs of dried mushies.

Thank you all for your help, I sterilized 5 more jars today for my second batch.
