Have a few cakes spawned to bulk a couple top fruiting. No pins yet, but how do you do agar to brf? Agar to LC?

Leave enough space and don't lay a dry verm layer. Just drop a wedge

Agar to BRF I simply place an agar wedge on top of the BRF substrate (no dry verm layer with this method) this method is slow for BRF ijoculation.

LC is inoculated the same way. Drop a small agar wedge into LC. Or the biopsy method

Not queer but I'll join in. I have 3 brf bulk tubs nearly ready to froot,(actually in frooting now) and 3 cakes kinda doing a big lot of fuck all atm. I've decided today I'm not going to fruit any more cakes because these have annoyed me but I do like doing pf Tek.

So for the purpose of this grow along I'll be posting about these here:

3 1/2 pint jam jars inoculated 11/10 with Columbian Rust LC all 3 nearly 100%

Then these same as the first jam jars were inoculated 24th maybe with KSLC. Normally I'd aim towards the inside of the jar so I can see as soon as the mycelium starts to colonize but with these I aimed straight down so I'm expecting it to take longer to see mycelium but I'll know for sure that the middle is fully colonized when it gets 100%

3 idk what size but small food savers that were used as pasty plates but the rubber seal fucked up in the pc so I drilled holes in the lid filled them siliconed round the lids and pcd them. Inoculated 20th or something like that with KSLC. All around 50%

I was thinking of spawning the first ones to coir, the small ones I might top fruit and someone might try and convince me to fruit the others in a chamber:shrug:

5 BRF cakes about 75% done colonizing. Inoculated about 4 weeks ago. Haven’t gotten much light since I’m doing this in what is basically the equivalent of a dorm room. Having to deal with a roommate limits grow possibilities.

I’m not yet sure how I’ll fruit these. I’ll probably fruit them out of the jars and/or bury them at a local park

Those ones were from an MS syringe I made like last year. Forgot to put it in the fridge. All the ones I used from that syringe were contams. Apparently my spore making skills suck in comparison to my LC skills. As the LC skills I use agar. The LC ones were perfectly fine lol.

The 3 jam jars are 100% probably going to spawn to coir later today or tomorrow. The 3 small tubs coming along well, another couple of days they should be 100%. Nothing visible yet in the other 3 though.

I was in-between bulk grows and had some left over in a PEU syringe so did a few cakes for nostalgia. Lazy man's Tek birthed a week or two ago. Just tossed some wet perlite in a shoebox with lid flipped and mist 2-3 times a day. Started bottom water yesterday.

3 half pint jars to about 2 and a bit pints of coir. Grated, mixed well, levelled and then a real thin layer of coir on. The lid is on right way round but the tub comes with 6 ventilation holes at each end so it'll be put on the shelf and hopefully ill not need to touch it till harvest.

11 cakes inoculated via Red Boy syringe today:

I use grain lids (two layers Micropore over a piece of Tyvek) instead of four holes and a verm barrier. And I've added a litte chicken manure to the sub, let's see what happens. My last grow with chicken manure (Muda bottles last year) put some really big second flush monsters out.

Let the wait begin... :mushroom2:

What does the instruction manual say the max pressure gets to? I'd assume around around 11.6 psi, since it looks very similar to my instant pot duo plus. If that's case, use the steam setting for at least 2 hours. I did 2.5 for my BRF jars and have no contams. Unfortunately these models of pressure cooker don't get up to the recommended 15 psi, so time needs to be increased.

Ooo I wanna play  when I receive a new print I always put it to agar but I also like to take part of it and make a spore syringe with distilled water. (I feel like spores store better when hydrated :justdontknow:) I use brf cakes to test my newly made spore syringes. That way if it works out (which I have not had one fail yet, knock on wood) I can fruit them and get more prints pretty fast  right now I have 3 AA+ and 3 PE6 ones just starting to show mycelium  hopefully I will be making up some more this weekend with rustywhyte and a few other prints I just got as well  I will try to post some pictures later.

Wauw, just look at the micro climate on and around the cake. Looks gorgeous!
I see pins all over that cake not just the cluster at the bottom. It will become more apparent in a day or two :super:

Just have to give you heads up on the one sector at the bottom (9 o'clock) trying to break away and leap onto the coir, explain to it that it's not suppose to leave the growing area

When you have dense clusters of pins focused around a small area
then it's hard to imagine all of those pins maturing into big fruits.
But as long as they grow healthy the cake will fill out and the total 'weight' of the flush will be 'full'

Sometimes you'll get a few big fruits from a 'full flush' and sometimes you'll get many smaller fruits from a 'full flush'. Just focus on keeping good conditions alike you are and mushrooms will keep growing and adding weight to your flushes :goodluck:

27 cakes ready for fruiting this weekend, and 40 more are waiting to be made

Interesting how the APE cultures have grown much thicker than the LGT cultures. Looks like APE cakes have 2-3 times the mycelial mass that LGT cakes have. One clone is really thick and the other one really thin. And then these the AA+ which is in between those two in terms of myc density inside/outside the cakes.

Thanks!  I'd be happy to share my regiment, but it is a work in progress.    For these cakes I put about 1/2 inch of verm on top which i kept misted, once pins started showing they looked a little wet so I shook off the excess verm and let the tops dry out.      It's too many pins though, they're gonna be small ones this flush.  I'm trying to get less pins but bigger shrooms on the next flush.    I've  added a little verm to the foil under the cakes I'll keep that misted, I'm hoping to get more on the sides that way.  We'll see...

Good shit :takingnotes:

And don't worry about many small fruits, sometimes few big fruits but in the end what maeers is weight of each flush. That flush you're pulling is a pretty full one. 2 cakes can yield the same in weight. One cake does it in two flushes and the other in 5 for example. But they still produced the same. That's how I see it at least.

The first thing I thought when I saw your cake was how thick the verm layer was and it looked sooo comfy for baby fruits :crazy2:

I'll definitely try that one some cakes. Also I will fruit some cakes naked from birth. I've done it before in HC with only one cake and it fruited fine. And I didn't even mist it once :laugh2:

What's your opinion on these jars, they've been consolidating about a month, I've been holding off on fruiting them because I'll be out of town for this weekend.    But today I noticed fruits are starting to show.

Would you dunk them now for a full 24? or put them in the fridge until next Monday?  I looked at them a couple days ago and didn't see anything, but now they're ready to pop.

They're in the dunk now, those jars had dozens of baby mushrooms, much more than the pics show.  Two of the 3 jars are 1/4 pints, I think I'll only dunk them 12 hours this time.  They're in a deep pot, so there's a good bit of water pressure on them.    The cakes shrunk a little and left some air space in the jars, they definitely trying to breath.

This post from fahster gave me the top watering idea. Its almost 10 years old but it's good stuff.

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/10882191#10882191

I got the idea from PF himself off his old site.  He was the first vendor I ordered from.  It's the inner rez tek... I used it because I didn't dunk prior to first flush, I watered slowly over the course of few days... Actually, here is an explanation of what I did with the cakes... It's in my tek index over at 'topia but I should have it here also.

I wrote it a long time ago and I don't have time to reread it, so I'm just going to quote the entire thing so some of it may be a little outdated or some of you may not agree with it, but it worked for me...

Quote:

CAKE WATERING TIPS

The idea is a simple one... if you want more mushrooms, you need more water... if you add more water, you need more FAE . There is a certain point of water retention in a cake that is most beneficial to the cakes production of pins and the maturation of those pins into full fruit-bodies. I call it the "Arc of Excellence", others call it the "Point of Diminishing Returns".

Picture an Arc and at the pinnacle of this arc is a point... this point is where the retention of water is at it's most beneficial to pin formation/development and then the maturation of those pins, hopefully 100% of the pins formed or at least most of them while safely resisting contams or drying out. To the left of that point is less water and to the right is too much water. Going too much to the right can result in contamination due to the water content being too high and the cake cannot cycle all the water has available to it. This over-saturation can also lead to poor pin formation and/or pin abortion. Not enough water can also cause poor pin formation/maturation. adjustments on either side of the point are easy to make... simply add more water if the cake is too dry or allow the cake to dry out a bit if it's too wet.

The inner reservoir  is a great way to increase water distribution evenly throughout your cakes. even tho it's a small column (about the diameter of a nickel), it has no nutes and therefore is not completely colonized; only partially which keeps the reservoir intact and allows for absorption all along its length. This also acts as an extension of your top and bottom casing  layers providing water to all parts of the fruiting  surface. it's true that cakes have more surface area, but without proper water hydration, that extra area is unused. I highly recommend the inner reservoir  and that it's made when the cakes are made... this allows the cake to slightly colonize it which, again, keeps it intact and stops water from just draining out the other end and also allows the cake to absorb water from it thru the myc that thinly colonizes it.

It's quite easy to know when to add water to the cake if we follow the processes and environment that the cake is subject to. Adding water to the cake right after birth is the best way to achieve that "point". This is because the cake is sterile right after birth, which helps with the contamination risk. The cake also doesn't have to struggle and reserve water; resulting is a healthy, unstressed cake right from the get-go. This is why dunked cakes or cakes that water has been fractionally added typically do better than undunked cakes on their first flush.

If you Dunk  your cakes after birth, I would Dunk  for no longer than 12 hours; changing the water every 4 and do it in a fridge if possible. Then apply a moist to wet casing  layer and leave be unwatered until about mid pinning.. of course doing your FAE's at least twice a day. I've done both, but lately I've chosen fractionally adding water after Birthing  over dunking . This is how I do that:

You can (highly recommended, def. during the summer months) pasteurize  your casing  material before application and boil the water you plan on using for the soaking of the casing  via bottle sprayer

1. I put down a piece of tin foil on the Perlite  and put a small pile of verm  on the foil and soak with water.

2. open the jars and poor off any uncolonized verm  air barrier... I don't scrape off the verm  that is attached to the cake... why? this is sterilized casing  material.. no reason to remove it if you're just going to put verm  on there anyhow (unless of course you are using a verm/coir  mixture or something similar). But regular verm  by itself works great.

3. then I birth the cake and hold it under water for about a minute with verm  barrier and all... this hydrates that verm  in the inner reservoir  and the air barrier.

4. I then apply a thick casing  layer, about that size is good (1.5 inches), to the top of the cake and soak it with water... to the point that there is water draining off the cake when it's tilted a little bit and place it on top of the pile of wet verm  on the foil. the cake will suck up this water in the next couple days... basically, this is a slow Dunk  but with lots of air available during the absorption.

5. Now you can do what I like to do and stack another cake on top of that one... this is a great space saver and utilizes the space you are already using. To stack the cakes, you need to put another piece of foil between them or water will get pulled down from the top cake via gravity; this will water log the bottom cake and dry out the top cake. You'll probably get a nice flush  from the bottom one but that cake will probably contam the next time around due to being water logged... putting a piece of foil between them stops this action of forcing the water down or at least slows it considerably. Now just repeat the steps for the top cake and put a small pile of soaked verm  on the foil and so on.

6. Now once you have your single verm  soaked cake, you give it a couple days to absorb that soaking... I come back on the third day of birth and soak the top casing  layer again to the point of pooling... This gets the cake about to the that "point" on the arc...

**note** -if you are doing the two cake "towers" only soak the top cakes top verm  casing  layer... the bottom cake just doesn't need a second soaking... it doesn't lose much water due to it being in close proximity of the Perlite  and being "capped" off by the top cake which allows for less evaporation. some of the water from the top cakes does find it's way to the bottom cake too, so that second soaking will most likely water log the cake.

7. Now I let the cakes go without another watering until mid fruiting  where the cakes need lots of water to extend their fruits. Watering here can replace the need for a Dunk  between flushes one and two.

There are is a large amount of factors that also play a role in when you should add water to the cake (which I do so by watering the center of the top casing  layer directly over where the inner reservoir  is located). The stages in which the growth of the myc. is in is a big one.. which is also entwined with when you birthed the cakes. If you birth the cake before Pinning  starts invitro , longer periods of evaporation need to be taken into consideration before the cake starts Pinning , which can be upwards of a week or more. But then entwined with that is the RH  of the air that you are exchanging when doing your FAE's. So lets say you are in a climate where in the winter the RH  is very low and the air is dry... when you do your FAE's in that climate, more evaporation is going to take place from your cakes and Perlite ; whereas, if you are doing your FAE's in a climate where the RH  is high (the summer months anywhere), then less evaporation after exchanging your new air is going to occur and that balance on that "point" will remain steady with little fluctuation so less water will need to be replaced. Even if you are in a low RH  environment, a small amount of water will need to be replaced as there is little growth in the way of pins which results in little need for the cake to tap into it's reserve within it's structure. Even during the Pinning  stage, small amounts of water are used in pin formation (more than before pin formation but not much). This can be seen in how dense the pins are.

Myc. is going to produce its pins at a point on the cake where four factors come together in the best ratio for optimal fruit development through spore dispersal: nutrients, air, water, and structure. This is why Pinning  on the edges are a preferred place for myc. in a overlayed casing  or normal casing  or on a cake, where the DEC  and myc. meet. (thanks Golly ). This is why you want to keep your DEC  nice and moist during the pinnig stage... this signals the cake that this is a good spot to grow a whole shit load of mushies.. and if the cake is nice and healthy and not struggling in any way, it'll put out a nice pinset and see all, if not most of those pins to maturation. But in order to see all those pins mature, another step should be taken.

This is where larger amounts of water can be added safely to the cakes' casing.. Right after pin maturity (right before the caps starts breaking away from the stem), the cake is getting ready to use A LOT of it's water reserve. This is because it is using this water to inflate and elongate the cells in it's fruitbodies... not to say that tissue gain in the fruits is completely stopped but certainly slowed as water inflates the mushrooms. This is (ime) why the growth of mushrooms happens so rapidly after pin maturation. So it's during mid fruiting  that water should or can be added to the casing  layer so that the cake can easily use this new water through absorption by gravity and inner reservoir . This will permit more of those mature pins to go on to mature sporulating fruit-bodies. This watering can also keep the water retained in the cake high in volume if it's replaced as the cake used it during pin maturation. once the cake is fully mature.. the cake will still be heavy and therefore all that is needed is a bleach  dip  and a new pasteurized casing  layer to be added and once again soaked (minus the third day of flush  soak, it's unneeded and possibly harmful to your cakes--- but should be taken into consideration by how hydrated your cakes are if it should be done or not) to bring the cake back to that "point". But a Dunk  is never a bad idea... just other ways to go at it. And some strains prefer dryer conditions than others so you really should play around with it... find your own way of doing things.. keep track of what you do and your results... And if you do decide to experiment, don't put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Fruiting from the jars for stealth reasons. Coming along weirdly, but at least they’re coming along

Alice asked the Cheshire Cat, who was sitting in a tree, “What road do I take?”

The cat asked, “Where do you want to go?”

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

These Purple Mystics are pretty, averaging about 5 grams dried per cake.

My PF current grow has stalled. These jars are like a month old and not even close (four different jars).

Im thinking they've dried out.

Looks like your mix is too tightly packed.  Is that a fine grain verm?

Also probably contaminated

Yeah I think its fine. Its for potting plants. I didn't pack it down in the jar but it has made a sort of solid cake already and shrunk away from the jar a bit.

I'd use a coarser grain verm in the future. It doesnt pack as tight when filling giving myc an easier time colonizing.  A month in and that's all the further they are not looking good...

Cool thanks for the tips. Would they even fully colonise if I gave them another month?

And so do you think this exotic pet verm would be to course? or is this the size I should be using?
Some how I manages to get success with mycelium syringe to grain but not to PF cakes :facepalm3:

The fact that it's taking so long means theres a problem so I doubt you would achieve full colonization without a contam making itself evident.  You can let it ride...no harm but keep expectations low.

That verm looks good

Those substrates look a lil dry to me and I know from experience that dried cakes taken much longer to colonize.

24 BRF cakes were made, 12 with 4:1:2 ratio and 12 with 2:1:1 ratio (verm, water, flour)

For batch one I used 12dl vermiculite, 3dl water and 6dl brown rice flour. (4:1:2)
For batch two I used 12dl vermiculite, 6dl water and 6dl brown rice flour. (2:1:1)

This test is determine if colonization times will be affected by the different ratios of water.
All jars were inoculated with 1ml blenderless LI each, a clone was used. Inoculated on Dec 2

6 days after inoculation
These the dryer BRF cakes made with 4:1:2 ratio      and these are the regular PF cakes with 2:1:1 ratio

A few days down the road
2:1:4 ratio

2:1:1 ratio

So far the 2:1:1 ratio is winning with the strongest looking mycelium, fastest recovery and largest area colonized thus far.

To be continued...

Edit: I don´t think we need more pics but the 2:1:1 outclassed the 4:1:2 ratio, finished a week earlier. Experiment finished.

Maybe my ratio was off? I did add some more verm because I thought it was over field capacity.

But probably something else besides field capacity is off, your cultures haven't gone far on the cakes.
Hard to say what's up..

I use the verm they sell at b&q (£8 for 10l) it seems to be a mixture of course and fine and has worked well for me.

Some Red Boy cake started fruiting in vitro, so I cased it and put into a shoebox humidity chamber style. I've already flipped the lid and the new pins don't look like they are suffocating...

I'm sooo late for my own grow along  but everything myco related went against me during the curse known as the year 2018 :oldman:

Anyway I have around 11L BRF mix that I'm gonna try to save face with :eatingout: hopefully I'll put around 10 varieties to these cakes so we have diversity and are not racist :bongload:

And I won't make the mistake again of forgetting to say "Inshallah" ("by the will God") after stating what will be what and what not.

So yeah, in a few weeks I'll finally post some pics of fruiting cakes. INSHALLAH!

I'd slurry that to 20-30 jars of grain, but be careful when you pour and only use sterilized destilled virgin pregnancy water. Soak down the grow area with chloroform and asbestos for greatest potency

Shoebox turned humidity chamber works really good, even for a single cake.

The only cake to fully colonize so far from attempts done back in Janurary. I attempted grains but failed due to cold conditions and infections.

I have another cake about 70% done. So glad this one made it. Im experimenting with wet sponges, inspired by the Humidity Chamber. I call it the Sponge Basket. Hope it works:
