How to be original. * 3
    #25572050 -

I realize that this will come off as pretentious and maybe a bit jaded to some but I've found a bit of personal entertainment in writing down some of the things that stir around in my head quite frequently recently. I'm sure this will be a TL;DR for many of you and if it is then just ignore it and pass over it. It's not for you. If you do take the time to read this and have any insights on how I could be wrong, please chime in! I'm desperate to be proven wrong.

If this type of thing is received poorly here, then I'll save this thread for any more pretentious writings I feel the need the shit out onto the internet.

-----

In the times that I find myself born into, it seems as though an original idea is an ungraspable achievement. There isn’t a single taboo left that can’t be justifiably broken by declaring what year it is. Not a single experience in current existence that hasn’t been attested to by some irrelevant name on an equally irrelevant platform. Worst (or maybe best) of all, is that with such an abundance of perspectives on the same set of experiences the mass of men seem crippled to be able to discern any real truth from any of it. There’s always some charlatan, somewhere, ready to reinterpret reality for whatever might fit inline with their objectives and a herd of enraged, thoughtless idiots, desperate for something to believe in, right behind them.

If there’s any truth about where we’re heading that I’ve found so far in my life, it’s that the future isn’t out there. Outside of us will always be merely a shadow of the past. If not influenced by history with reckless abandonment then, at the very least, you’ll always be a slight fraction of a millisecond behind as you wait for the light of now to make its way to your eyes. The present is nothing more than a hologram created within each of us. An illusion of a grounding in time.

When I first learned about computer science, the real crux of the point of learning it all was always hidden behind the works of my predecessors. With good intentions they simplified and abstracted the experience of using a computer so much that, by the time I got around to using one, the machines were nothing short of the purest illusion of magic. It seemed that such a device could only be made by the hands of gods. But the road to hell is paved with good intentions and the work of God is filtered through us, the beast.

It took almost 5 years of dedication to decrypt the work of those before me and by that time there was an aura of being cheated about the nature of computers. There was no touch from god, no real perfection to the thing. It was so obviously made by man and reflective of all his impurities.

To save you several years, the real spiritual lesson to the whole thing can be described as this: everything that ever was and ever will be is nothing more than abstract data encoded over some media with a purely mathematical base. In the case of computers, the media is electronically symbolic binary. A base numeral system of 2 denoting value or the lack thereof by the presence of electrons in some section of the circuitry. The data isn’t in any real order. Of course, some data is sectioned off here and another there, but, in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t really mean anything. Depending on where you start reading the data, how long it’s supposed to be and how you interpret it you can ultimately arrive at any conclusion. Like quantum physics, it only exists in a superstate until you assign it meaning within yourself.

Some suggest, in my attempt to find something original, a new way of interpreting the data of out there being fed to each of us, that I should turn to drugs. Particularly hallucinogens. But all those that are on offer have been primed with the interpretations of those that have taken them first. Their originality lost to me as someone else’s rehash. Perhaps the way out of this is to create a new drug, something that has never been taken before. But even that pays respects to the limits of out there. You can’t create a drug for a new perspective that isn’t already implicitly pre-sanctioned by the laws of physics.

Perhaps the way to true uniqueness lies only after death.

Yeah, the universe is a crazy thing. Whatever.

Originality is the result not the cause, an outward observation of your experience at the least, epiphany at the most. Only those who cross the line know where it is type deal. Feel me? Nothing to concern yourself with here. You're wasting time.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I couldn't imagine what it must have been like for the first proto-human to come up with the idea of language. But is approaching that line left up to fate or is it something you can actively propel yourself towards?

It depends on how you feel about nihilism. I personally think it doesn't matter either way. Do you really care that much to be original when you're just a mere thread of universe?

Not sure what u are trying to say but it sounds bleek and hopeless.

Originality is a strange thing. Are we all repeating what our ancestors did? Perhaps. But i would also argue what we do now is still unique, still "original" since time is unwritten. It hasnt happened yet.

Enough to write about it. My thoughts currently are that if I have nothing to contribute (through originality or by reinforcing well-established institutions that everyone nowadays seems to be throwing out the window) I might as well be leading a hedonistic existence. And to me, if you lead a hedonistic existence it seems that when you total everything up at the end of your life, more often than not, it would be better for the world if you never even existed to begin with.

Are you sure about that? If I drop a ball is it not already written into the future that it will hit the ground? Unless of course I catch it but I will have had to have planned that too. It might take place at a different point, but it's the same pattern.

That's harsh mate. You don't need to feel obligated to contribute. Hedonism is holy. Take part in it all the time, feel pleasure, it's nice.

I get where you're coming from but in my experience feeling pleasure for pleasures sake is always empty. Only when I'm not reaching for it do I find it in it's most sublime state. And especially after I have contributed something I find ultimately meaningful.

Theres nothing wrong with pondering these things OP but you must remember that comparison is the thief of happiness. Just focus on being great at what you do and remember it is best to only compete with yourself. At least thats how I feel about it.

"There is nothing new under the sun."

These words were written a long time ago, and spoken a long time before that.

They are true to a point; even though at the time, the atoms of my smartphone were scattered across the planet.

Man had not learned to gather, conform them, and invigorate them with harnessed lightning.

What more will our ancestors do?

+1

That's a really interesting philosophy you have there.
I can look back when hedonism was my reason for living, and I was a piece of shit.

But I thought I was simply doing it wrong because of this:

Quote:
the ethical theory that pleasure (in the sense of the satisfaction of desires) is the highest good and proper aim of human life.

Maybe I still live my life in a somewhat hedonistic fashion, I know I do at times, but my pleasures have dramatically changed. So, do you believe it's possible to be hedonistic and deserve to have existed? Are there loopholes to your theory?

Thanks for making me think.
Or...I like your brain stimulations, but that just sounds creepy.

You're right. I guess I'm just at that point in life where I haven't found exactly what it is that I do that I'm happy with.

They are true to a point; even though at the time, the atoms of my smartphone were scattered across the planet.

The way I see it, the internet, the printing press, science, mathematics... they're all logical evolutions of the concept of language and communicating the information within ourselves to each other. Smart phone or not, maybe in one life we were gathered around a fire talking about this stuff.

Maybe if you truly love whatever it is that you're doing and you're contributing and helping others by doing it. But what I see mainly in life in the hedonist types, especially with capitalism, is that it all seems like a grab at more than you have given. Which is a net negative and makes me kind of sick to my stomach. Not knocking capitalism, it's done great things but it's based off the (correct) assumption that people want more than they're worth and typically aren't happy with just giving.

Even in myself, I think I love giving. But at the same time if I do it too much I find myself getting angry at the people I set out to help even if I wanted nothing in return originally.

For example, a few years ago I went out to deliver gifts for Christmas to people who couldn't afford them so their children could still have some of their wish list. The first time one person didn't say "thank you", I was legitimately angry. And I didn't realize until after that maybe I was only doing it so that I could feel good about myself. I didn't consider how embarrassing it might be for that person to feel that they couldn't provide for their children or the things they might be going through in their life. It was all so I can feel somehow superior. I haven't done it since.

Maybe I'm just a try hard desperate for a Beatles lyric to be correct before I die. And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. As if there isn't a surplus to go around.

I can definitely relate when you speak of hedonist types that only take from society.
Whether that's via capitalism or not.

But good ol' altruism. That's a tough one for me.
Reading about you delivering gifts and feeling that you deserve gratitude reminded me immediately of when I would bring homeless people into my home, and give them food and a place to sleep for a night or two.
In my mind at that time, I was being completely altruistic. Only to look back on it, I had expectations of them as I had of everyone else at that time. It wasn't doing good for good's sake. It was doing good for gratitude, and possibly to a smaller extent, status which is quite sad. Feeling superior, as you stated.

I mean it was definitely nice of you to have done that. That's something I think about a lot and really, genuinely want to do with my life I think so far. Helping to build people up who really could use a hand. But there doesn't seem to be a long-term stable way I've come up with to do that, that doesn't require some amount of expected work and ultimately completely depend on the person I'm trying to help to do the work themselves. Which is sort of like, "Hey forget your life and greater society and come pour yourself into my institution for awhile. You'll be better of because of it." Which sounds and feels fucked.
