Fan specs for humidifier in Martha set-up
    #25570389 -

I'm putting together an agar-style humidifier (30 gallon barrel + SQL cage blower + pond fogger + bubble stones) for a 5-Tier Martha set-up. I need to know if this 3700 RPM / 26.5 CFM fan should do the job (and if not, might you suggest something specific?). Agar says 25 cfm is good, but the spec charts and tables say that at a static pressure of .5 (in H2O), the fan's air flow drops to 16.25 CFM. Would that be a problem (and I shold get a higher-cfm fan?)? Or is that dip understood in the recommendation of a 25 cfm fan?

Thanks!

Might this ~3000 RPM / 42.45 cfm fan remain above 25 cfm? Its specs say max. static pressure is 41.10mm-H2O.

This 3000 RPM / 38.5 cfm fan doesn't list static pressure.

How should I assess which of these three (if any) is best suited for the agar-style humidifier?

You are really putting too much thought into it. Especially since soon you will realize mono tubs are easier and have a better yield. In a year or whenever you realize it, you will say why did I spend all that money on all that.

Thanks, SHROOMSISAY01.

Monotubs are the best, esp. for cubes. I just retired two tubs after a few flushes each, and spawned cube-WBS to another - and have 30 quarts colonizing for six more monos on the way. Yes To Monotubs! I'd like to try other low-FAE species in monos, too, like reishi.

But this Martha is for king oyster and other species that require FAE. I hear there are some who "pulled off" lion's mane in a monotub, but I want to create the conditions that are most effective for these species. (Will Shiitake grow as well in a mono as in a Martha?)

Thanks!

Thanks, Mycolorado! I was wondering if there might be a marine fan that would work - although I also read they're louder (which I'd like to avoid, if possible).

Do you use one in this application? From agar's thread, it sounds like the ~200 cfm of this 4" fan will be way too high. Even the 3" version is around 120 cfm. Both would require dialing down to around 25 cfm (via rheostat or some kind of fan controller?).

Is that correct?

Yeah, they move a lot of air!  I did use it in a similar fashion.  I didn’t have an issue with it being too high powered as I diffused the output inside the tent with a piece of irrigation pvc which also helps evenly distribute the air around the tent.  Commercial outfits use poly with holes poked in it, attached to the ceiling of the fruiting chamber.

Awesome. Maybe with the reservoir on the floor, and PVC or other ducting extending 3'+ upwards, and then bending into a horizontally top-mounted perforated PVC distribution pipe like yours, would put the extra fan power to use while slowing things down by the time the humidified air reaches its Martha-target!

If that sounds right, I'll add it to my little design repertoire.

Thanks, Mycolorado!

You bet!  Yeah, that’s basically what I did with this (depot carries it); i ran the air up and in the top of the tent where it entered the pvc and then turns 90 degrees down the opposite side of the tent.  You can kind of see it in this pic.

Wow! Two things:

1. I see the perforated pipe runs across the top - but you also have perforations running down the opposite side? Nice.
2. That's a way bigger space than my 27" x 19" x 76" Martha! Might such a fan be overkill for my littler space?

I appreciate your help, Mycolorado!

Yeah, it’s likely overkill for that size but drawing off of the humidity tub and using some type of diffuser might slow the flow down enough.  Also, these come unwired...I use laptop power supplies to run them and I’m thinking you might be able to run them under 12v with like a 9v power supply.  It’s prolly not the best for the fan but I’ve run quite a few pc fans that way without issue.  Anyway, just some food for thought.

A good thought.

Because we're not looking at high-dollar fans, perhaps I should get a 3Amp power supply that might work with any of them, and first try one of these lower-cfm fans; and, if they fail, trade up to your marine/bilge fan.

If I want to pay more for less, there are options. But it's hard to believe these 40 - 50ish cfm candidates aren't available a little cheaper on Amazon/eBay. WTF?! Is it my bad eyes? LOL.

Sorry, I should have checked which forum I was in. But In that case, I Would make it easy on myself and get a bigger fan and use a dc motor speed control and adjust it where I needed it. Something like this...

No more guessing. Just a little adjusting!!

when I used a similar set up with a tote I used an ip67 waterproof computer fan they are cheap and the controller above. This one is like 71 cfm and has a 6 years manufacturer’s warranty...

Awesome, SHROOMSISAY01! Thanks for the link to the controller! Very promising. Agar says those fans don't generate adequate pressure; but this is worth a try. Maybe it would work fine.

But, perhaps even better, I'll find a blower/bilge fan (something like the one Mycolorado suggested above) I can use with your controller, and this 3A 12V DC power supply . . .

Starting to shape up. Thanks!

Just figure out what works for you. All I know is it worked for me. But I was only going through 4 or 5 feet of pipe and I used a tote which is smaller. Anyway, good luck and please update us on how it worked out and what you ended up using.

I'm an idiot I didn't notice those were links but that is exactly what I would use. If you don't mind waiting you can get the power supply for less than 1/2 that price on eBay I just did a quick search...

Hey, watch who you're calling an idiot, SHROOMSISAY01!

Seriously, thanks for your support of my cultivation efforts today. I will definitely pay it forward and report it backward. I've got much better leads on how I'll pull off my next step now.

Just a heads up, I am currently in the process of designing a similar greenhouse set up using a bilge blower. The blower I bought is rated at 12V 2.5A and I planned to power it with a DC power supply I had laying around rated for 12V 3.5A. But when I supplied voltage to the blower the power supply would cut out, turning on and off. I figured (and with the help of others on the net) that the power supply likely has some type of surge protector built in and the power on cycle for the blower draws a much higher amperage then what the fan is rated for in order to start the motor, so the surge protector trips and prevents the blower from turning on.

I had a bunch of other power supplies laying around and some of them acted similarly and some worked fine. Playing around with a multi-meter some of the power supplies would actually draw a lot more amps then what they're rated for too. As an example one of them is rated for 12V 1A and could put out 2.7A at 10.8V. So it might be a good idea to look for a DC power supply that is rated for a fairly large amperage.

Also they are pretty loud. I've been messing around with building a sound dampening box for it. But the majority of the sound comes from the exhaust and vibrations.

Mycolorado, have you ran into this sort of problem when trying to power your bilge blowers? Also do you know if undervolting DC motors will shorten their lifespan? I know it's hard on AC motors because the voltage cycle doesn't work the same as in DC, which is why you need a rheostat to control the speed.

SHROOMSISAY01, It's too bad I didn't ask people here about a water proof computer fan. I was looking for some before I bought the bilge blower but couldn't find any. But if the bilge blower gets to be too much of an annoyance for me I can look into the Noctua fans you posted a link for. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for sharing this potentially headache-saving heads-up, DigitalRhizae!

Using SHROOMSISAY01's link, you can even get two 6A power supplies for $15. That would power any DC device that draws up to that, right? Is there any drawback* to going with higher amperage?

About the loud-issue: I might even take a stab at achieving 25 cfm using one of those little fans whose cfm is in the upper 30s or lower 40s. I suspect those are quieter, and if they'd work . . .

* pun intended
