they busted up the oil companies back in the day and now google and amazon have far more data and money that shapes elections and governments worldwide. way too much power in the hands of a few. if we broke them up a lot of small and medium businesses could compete making shit better for consumers.

Capitalism is a great way to start a nation, but it cannot last indefinitely. True capitalism anyway. That's why there are government regulations that encourage fair trade practices and discourage monopolies.

If people could be trusted to "do" capitalism, then we wouldn't need the government. Instead, this current situation is a tale as old as time. People can't be trusted. Smart and dishonest people can make the system lopsided (as evidenced in the Great Depression).

What I am suggesting is an even bigger overhaul to ensure that the market remains fair. Since we can't trust rich fat cats to play fair, we must tax them.

People always bring up social programs (e.g., welfare) and cite how lazy people are, but I don't believe that too be true. In fact, the money spent on welfare is a drop in the bucket compared to fountain of money consolidated at the top. Redistribute, or we will see bloodshed like in all previous civilizations.

(As an aside, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that we printed so much money to "bailout" the economy in the hopes of "trickle down", but that has not occurred. 15 dollar minimum wage would not even prop most struggling families "up" enough.

No matter your belief system, be sure to vote!

Any solution in mind?

Well, the biggest issues lies with the people controlling the financial system. At this point, they're essentially the foxes guarding the hen house.

The wealth and income inequality is getting so perverse that unless it's reversed in short order, it will implode in on itself.

If the economics break, we're going to see this problem take on a whole new dimension. The next recession will panic the elite and they're going to take it out on the peasants.

Trump blew his chance to stop immigration, globalization and never was able to implement nationalist policies.

Trickle down does work.

When everyone argues trickle, they always think about the massive business. But imagine a business of 5 employees. More money for a successful company means growth. Move up to a company populated of 500, 5000,  50000, and so forth.

You don't seem to understand trickle down economics.  It has nothing to do with giving companies with 5 employees more money.  It has to do with giving the super wealthy bigger tax breaks.

qman said:
"Trickle down does work"

If that was true, we wouldn't be seeing the top .01 of 1% making the vast majority of the economic gains relative to the rest of the population.

You do realize, it's the goal of the people with most of the money to keep it and starve off the peasants to the best of their ability?  It's called capitalism.

Exactly.  Trickle down simply means letting billionaires keep more money.  How does that help the rest of us exactly?  It's the silliest idea I've ever heard:  "Let's give the rich more money and the rest of us will be better off!"

How about 'trickle up' economics, where we give the middle class and the poor more money, and it trickles up to the rich when they spend it?

When’s the last time you watched a “AAA” movie? None of that’s possible without having big business. The poor are just stupid, lazy, or unfortunate. While it’s true that not everyone gets to experience life to the fullest, that’s life. That’s how it works.

But honestly, what gives you the right to tell other people how they should spend their money? If they want to donate, fund programs, etc, that’s on them. If you want a socialist paradise, Venezuela is not that far away.

:strokebeard:

"If the rich are taxed more, everyone makes less money"

So if the rich are given tax breaks, everyone makes more money?  No, trickle down economics is a failed concept, we have 40 years of hard data to support it.

BTW, what have the companies done after receiving the largest corporate tax cut in US history?  Yeah, almost all of the money went into share buybacks.  There's no rule that suggests they have to reinvest it back into labor or equipment. People that embrace trickle down don't understand the true nature of capitalism.

Wrong.  Any money a company gives to its owners through salaries or bonuses leaves that company.  If a company wants to keep the money to reinvest, it can do that and the money wouldn't even get taxed.

Interesting how every single one of those countries has significantly less people, allowing for a higher demand of professionalism. Also, considering how countries like Denmark are kind of up there unfairly. Just because they’re making more money doesn’t mean rate of living doesn’t cost more. Did you know that a car on average costs twice as much in Europe? Did you know those countries (the socialist ones) taxes are higher?

Also, to be very very clear:
TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMICS ABSOLUTELY IS NOT A THING AND NEVER WAS. IT WAS A PARAPHRASED QUOTE THAT WAS PARROTED ENOUGH THAT NOW ITS A TALKING POINT FOR BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT. SUPPLY SIDE ECONOMICS IS NOT TRICKLE DOWN, NOR IS TRICKLE DOWN A THING.

IF YOU SAY SOMETHING ENOUGH, IT ALL OF A SUDDEN BECOMES TRUE.

Supply side economics has to do with the way the the economy works. You are a consumer in every way, every day. The money you give those companies immediately allocate that money into new and improved products, allowing for advancement for both the consumer and the company. There’s no “corporate greed”. That’s just some bullshit your liberal history teacher told you and you just figured it made sense. How much actual research do you people do on how your economy works? Probably none, because who cares about that, right?

Let’s not forget that 90 million people in America have an iPhone, and 223 million own a smartphone. Do you realize you have an object a million times more effective than 1960’s NASA’s supercomputers? We are in literally the least impoverished time in history! For fucks sake, we are at the lowest unemployment rate in history and people no longer have to have kids to support themselves? Can you imagine the amount of freedom we have?

How did we get that iPhone? Well, Steve Jobs needed rich people to invest in him and over the course of supply side economics over 30 years, we eventually got better and better products due to hard work and research. To say that Apple isn’t one of the most important companies to have ever been founded,  (probably on the same level as the Carnegie industry) and all people have to say is Apple is greedy. You do realize how money works, right? If 99 percent of wealth is at the top, that means that banks are there to lend people money to do things they couldn’t normally, like starting a company or the down payment on a house.

I’m a capitalist at heart, and we need it to progress. Handing out free shit is only going to destroy our sense of worth and demotivate us. I’m all for giving people the education they need and I’m all for safety net type programs. But we aren’t going to get very far by just distributing the wealth. That’s now how economics works.

The truth is the population total is irrelevant. More people means more taxpayers and more consumers and more workers.

If anything, population size HELPS economies. Or should I’m theory, capitalism makes sure all the wealth trickles directly to the top. Denmark (capitalist country) just makes sure less of it trickles up. Why? They have an educated public and strong unions.

Lol no. Denmark is wealthy because it has a massive sovereign wealth fund, and control of resources that ensures its expansion.
