For me it's working with grains. I still haven't gotten down a prep that I like well enough. My agar work looks go to me, but it always looks bacterial by the time it colonizes grain. Gonna try venting for 15 minutes instead of 10 this next batch to see if it makes a difference for me.

Still tinkering with getting field capacity right too. I've dropped my water down to 3L on one brick of coir and it still seems to be above capacity.

I have always done exactly one gallon and its always perfect for me. I havent ever had to squeeze it down when loading oven bag. The only time was when I added verm before the water, so it was too dry and didnt expand correct. Had to add water to get it right then had to squeeze. Anyway, I always do 1qt per quarter brick.

Tbh, I always just use a weed eater to chop straw. Thinking about buying a leaf blower, vacuum, mulcher with bag attachment. My biggest gripe is how messy and dusty it can be. Unfortunately, I don't think my yard/neighborhood is really compatible with chopping straw with a lawn mower.

I have a combo blower, vacuum, mulcher thing. It works ok, but it's cheap. I spend more time unclogging it than actual chopping. I'm thinking of buying a little dedicated chipper.

Pouring water from monotubs after dunking without damaging the mycelium/snapping it in half (plank of wood comes in handy).

Everything about preparing grain is a chore.

Scuttle fly.

Pasteurising horse shit and stinking the house out.

Pasteurising straw and making a mess.

So you wouldn't recommend it? A weed eater works fine for me, I was just thinking maybe that option would keep the mess better contained. I've spoken to a few people who use them, and besides having to run the straw through twice to get it chopped, they all seemed pretty satisfied.

I have a little 14 amp electric sun joe wood chipper I use for yardwork and sticks, but it doesn't really work for straw (the opening to feed it in is too small, doesn't chop it efficiently or without a lot of fussing to shove it down). If you're going to go with a chipper, don't get that or a similar model. I wish I had room and the money to spend on a big one.

I've always been curious how well this thing would handle straw.

The model I have is really cheap. It does a bad overall jobat everything that it is made to do. Other models may actually work. Maybe not a chipper then, but a shredder? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GDHWVTT/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_OGR3Bb97S7KV3

For some reason your link isn't working, but it looks to be a shredder. Maybe someone reading this has used them.

Weird, it was working for me. I edited a different link in. Does that one work? It was just a link to a Sun Joe Shredder Joe Electric Leaf Mulcher/Shredder.

The chipper I have is marketed as a chipper/shredder. It seems similar to the one you linked, so I imagine you'd run into the same issues.

For me, the worst part is dialing in my tubs.  I still don't have that figured out and with the high humidity climate I live in its hard for me.  Usually the outer perimeter gets dry while the middle still has dew.  I've tried so many things I just hope for the best now.

Wasting my time, not being able to grows damn thing, not enough space, working in a SAB, getting contaminations, never having time to try to grow, having to avoid doing any myc work around other people, dumping trash, riding with contaminated mycelium to the dump, frustration of not having lab, dealing with misinformation or outdated teks, all the money I spent without a mushroom to show for it, waiting for literally everything...I think I enjoyed making agar.

I love mushrooms, love the process but I’m really annoyed with the whole thing and kinda bitter.

damn man, it sounds like you jumped in without spending enough time reading the forum.  Slow down and use the noggin. Its work but its enjoyable. It shouldnt be that hard. I think most of us here wish we had a lab. If I can grow 8 tubs during a house renovation with no contam, as  a newb no less, im pretty sure you can get a single mushy.
stay strong. this is for people with patience.

For me the worst part is the post grow clean up. By that I mean disposing of the subs and washing out all the tubs.

I feel that people should try to practice patience in general but... that's just my warped opinion.

Not saying I don't struggle with it myself at times but instant gratification rarely happens.

I cast my vote for PITA. :super:

Edit: The main reason I went back to lining tubs is to make cleanup less of a hassle.
