Might try mixing some insect frass in with your sub.  Gnats hate it and i bet the cubies wont mind.  Havent tried it myself yet but ants are my hated pest.

P.s. taping tubs sucks!

Upside down. No lid. Use wet paper towels for a floor. Scrunch them up to seal around the edges. For vision, your arm holes should be good enough to see.

You guys know you should be using your SAB upside down right? Fuck the lid. Fuck working on the unstable bottom.

My setup doesn't allow for this, although I'm toying with using my kitchen counter for pouring next. My SAB is fine for everything but pouring agar.

its ground up insects.  it works really well for keeping fungus gnats out of soil.  might bump the Nitrogen too.  it could probably be pasteurized and sprinkled on a colonized sub

This is your LEAST favorite part? I'll never run out of fungus... probably my favorite part: eating oz at a time and never worrying about running low lol

PCing grains I hate the most because it takes up most of my time. I have to attend to it even though I can do other things in the house. I still need to adjust the heat or the PC starts to make too much fucking noise when the grain mass start to really heat up in the center of the jars. Plus the cooking that is required to hydrate the grains. Quite a bit of work and time.

Harvesting I dont hate so much ATM because I started cutting in stead of pulling. Way less work involved; no clumps of sub hanging on to the harvested shrooms. So no shroom cleaning needed!

Its really cool though when you go out for a day or 2 and come back to pins or actual fruits that were just knots the last time you saw em

Losing anything to contam.

I say a short little prayer for the fungus when discarding. Poor guy. I had so much hope in them. Now they get to battle it out in my garden. RIP in peace.

A close second is the patience needed. Xen master levels of patience.

Since I never actually seen cube myc survive my compost heap I know I'm consigning them to a miserable fate. If I was rich and had even more time to burn I'd PC em just to give the organism a quick death.

I'm so fucking patient now cause of this hobby. I can wait for weeks for things fine now. I dont impulse buy as much.

For me its a tossup between labelling a shit load of jars (I'm anal about dates so each label is like 4-5 lines of writing), trying to keep my stock of lids not-shitty, and cleaning jars (THANK GOD FOR DISHWASHERS)

I don't expect them to survive at all. It would be nice if they did and fruited. Trich in its mycorrhizal mode is awesome for the plants. Other moulds, yeasts, bacteria, etc I hope can only be good for the compost heap.

Amen! I was about to clean up a whole load by hand, when I remembered the underused dishwasher. 32 jars easy.

I have printouts as labels for jars that include all information I need. When I inoculate, the same inoculant is used for multiple jars, usually 5-10. So instead of labeling 10 jars, I pyramid them in a stack on my shelf and tape the label to the center jar. My labels show how many quarts/pints are involved, and if the shelf is full, I list how many are regular mouth, wide mouth, or with plastic lids (just in case I mix some up). And with shit like expansion via G2G, I know the plan ahead of time, so I just print the labels off w/ the information included. Super easy and super detailed.

As far as washing jars: why the fuck are y'all washing jars? Unless you're fruiting from bottles w/ CVG mixed in or something, or dealing with bacteria, you don't need to wash jars. I rarely have anything left in them anyway, but if you have extra grains or myc, just use a dry scrubber brush to quickly swish around and knock them loose and you're fine to use them again as-is. Everything gets killed on the next PC cycle.

Definitely wash your jars. Don't be lazy.

It has nothing to do with being lazy. It has to do with what is necessary and what isn't. What benefit is there to washing my jars after dried grains have been in them? What harm have I been inadvertently experiencing by immediately putting new grains in my jars after spawning and running them in my PC?

Yeah I got lazy when it came to washing jars and sometimes agar wedges fuse to the glass and crap at the bottom stains it and it just looks gross.

Right, so spend 2 seconds inspecting the jar to see if something is stuck in there. If so, spend another 5 seconds with a scrubber brush and voila, your jar is fine. Running grain jars in the dishwasher is not necessary and a waste of water and electricity.

And I personally don't care about stains or jars looking gross. If you do, that's cool, wash whatever, but that doesn't hurt your future grows or fuck anything up, which is what I'm talking about.
