Great American Read Results * 3

Last night, after several months of voting in which over four million votes were cast, PBS revealed in order the list of the 100 novels most beloved by Americans: https://www.pbs.org/the-great-american-read/results/. It was an exciting way to promote awareness of great novels and to get people pumped up about reading. What do you think of the results? What pleased you? Frustrated you? Surprised you? I wish my candidate, Stephen King’s The Stand, had finished higher, but I was pleased to see Tom Sawyer, Grapes of Wrath, Charlotte’s Web, 1984, and To Kill a Mockingbird finish high. My biggest surprise was the books that could have been on the list but weren’t even available for voting: A Clockwork Orange, The Bell Jar, On the Road, and Fear and Loathing to name a few. Room could have been made for these by omitting recently published books. I’m not sure that a two-year-old book like The Ghost is appropriate for this list. It might be forgotten in ten years.

Im glad a Tor book made the List. Wheel of Time! Whooo!

Didnt even know that Jurrasic Park was a book. Was the movie based on the book?

Almost all those books i remember hearing about or reading in school. Its definitely the mainstream classics for sure.

I read a book once. It was called grapes of wrath, they made a movie out of it.

Yeah, I'm interested in reading Wheel of Time now.

Jurassic Park is a decent book. Yes, the movie is based off of it.

It's upsetting to see that a lot of book on the list have been REQUIRED reading
in middle and highschool in america for decades.

This list only proves to me that americans really dont like to read and when
presented a questionnaire, the only books that came to mind were books they had
to read in school and have read very little more than those.

actually just started rereading the series, just getting into the prequel a new spring.

have not read them since the last books were released so a lot of details are hazy but i am still struggling at times to pay attention to some of the long winded detailing.

enjoyment of books is often hinged on your imagination as the author sets the scene it is your job to bring it to life. if you are looking for no effort watch a movie, but don't be surprised when half of the good content is let out because it doesn't adapt to visual format well.

i feel bad for people that don't read, it really hinders your mental development.

it's by design, it is harder to develop critical thinking when you can't process the information. the next generation is going to be even worse with everything being a touch screen app.

Time to grow up and read some big boy books. Even if not literary classics, at least
something more thought provoking than harry potter and outlander.

Ya young adult fantasy fiction is great when you're 12 but come on they are not great american novels or even works of truly great authors. Anyone can write a young adult fantasy novel. Not everyone can write a work of true literary merit.
