Does mycelium consume fat?
    #25557242 - 10/22/18 10:04 AM (2 years, 4 months ago)

Meaning like grease residue from a bowl where potato chips or greasy foodstuff's been in.

I'm not sure you're going to be able to convince the mycelium to do your dishes

I doubt it.

BTW, that's not fat it's oil. Fats only come from animals. They are both lipids.

:whathesaid: If anything I would say the mycelium would avoid it or process it very slowly.

Lipids are fatty acids, oil is fat in liquid form at room temperature. Even crude oil, I think, is just the carboxylic result of decomposition of fatty acids.

Fungi can digest fatty acids with lipase, and utilize fatty acid esters (another type of FAE) produced by bacteria. I don't know about Psilocybe mycelium in particular but even yeast can change from feeding on sugars to fats so I would imagine that P. cubensis and others have at least a relationship with the fats present in seeds.
I'm not sure how this relates to breaking down vegetable oil residue on a bowl.

Depends on the mycelium...

I don't know about psilocybe, but oyster mushroom mycelium is a real glutton. It immobilizes and eats worms in the ground, it can clean up polluted soil by digesting all the mineral oil, it will even fruit on the plastic/paper floor of buses in some shitholes where they let it.

This. Stamens has demonstrated that oyster mycelium can process and help clean up soils with oil contamination.
