So I traded $25 US for Two Thousand and Five Hundred Cent coins at the bank
    #25548662 -

I felt rich AF with all that money. THOUSANDS OF COINS!

I mean, it's like 5 years ago when I traded $700 for one dollar bills and threw a crazy party. Like those shows where they put a person in a tunnel with money and an air blower.

But anyways. I think PSI can chime in on this. I got them to look for the copper ones. Apparently the USA is going to do away with the Cent coin, like Canada did.

So for each copper penny I find, it's worth 2 cents. So far, I've looked through $7 worth and I have about 40 cents of 95% pure copper.

Am I wasting my time? PSI mentioned having a machine to seperate them. That'd be out of my price range.

I used to do this. Definitely not worth the time but it is pretty cool having tens of thousands of pennies sitting around.

So , I worked hard all day. So I looked through the pennies tonight while watching a movie. That is not really time lost.

Did you give up or need to cash in the copper ones, or what?

Nope, they're sitting around in five gallon water bottles in my garage. Definitely wear gloves and a dust mask, there's nasty shit in there. It is kinda cool finding old ones occasionally. There's even a steel penny from 1943 I found. Find a copper penny from 1943 and you'll be a rich man.

This is the machine I got: http://www.pennysorter.com/products/sorting-machines

Basically it's a coin hopper hooked up to a coin comparator. The coin comparator tests each coin against a reference coin that you leave in it. The hopper is pretty fast but also very noisy.

This is the forum I used to be active on: http://realcent.org/

Found buyers on there for pennies and nickels in the past. But looking now it seems like most of the stuff people are selling is precious metals.

Sounds like a big waste of life. You're actually spending money on this. You would be better off going through trash for broken electronics, begging, or just getting a normal job and enjoying your free time.

Tie a strong magnet to a rope and pull guns and shopping carts out of the rivers. At least you'll be cleaning up nature if you do that.

If you get a strong enough magnet it will do the sorting for you, for the most part. Copper is non-ferrous. 1" magnet in your palm and wave it over a pile. Take coins and put them back. In the end you'd have a pile of copper coins where you started and everything else would be conveniently put away.

Hrm, I don't know about that. If it worked, why would people use a coin sorter? U.S.A. pennies that are not copper are 95% zinc

Definitely works on new Canadian pennies though, I know because I was using coins to show my son magnets maybe a week or so ago. If you're right you're right but if there's any doubt then looking in to it could save you a lot of work.

There were also some zinc pennies in Canada that will not stick to a magnet. But in the US it would not help you, except to get out any Canadian steel pennies or WW2 American steel ones.

Dang. I just googled it. Even after the penny was done away with, you still can't melt it. !! bollocks .

Here in America, people sell copper pennies for 2x face value all day on eBay I just saw. So at the very least I can unload them there.

From what I understand, it was legal for me to ship Canadian coins to the US, and it would be legal for the buyer to melt them there if they wanted, but me shipping them knowing for sure that they would be melted might have been a problem.

True. There's a law about that for U.S. pennies too. I forget the limit but it would be impractical/illegal to ship or transport enough copper pennies cross either border to make it worth it.

Yeah for pennies it was not worth it for me to ship to the US, but I did with nickels. The guy who was buying pennies from me I was meeting up with in person locally. I met him through that forum. He was this Asian guy in his 20s.

yeah. I just checked out some posts on the forum. Lots of people are finding coins considered "numismatic" .... which would highly override the value of the copper.

WHich would also be an advantage of sorting by hand.

The cost of sourcing adequately dated pennies, driving the loot across town, sorcing equipment to melt them down and spending actual time doing so would be a net loss unless done with enough pennies to purchase a house, which would take up enough space that you're losing money on the space needed to house the pennies through rent and mortgage payments.

You could take the 25 dollars, buy something for cheap and sell it online for more and it would take less time and work than melting down pennies and sourcing a copper buyer that will give you market value for street copper.

Shoot, you'll get more material going dumpster diving for discarded scrap.

BTW, out of 2500 pennies, I found 7 wheatbacks( One dated 1919!) and aprox. 300 copper ones. So about 12%?

also, 1 dime(wtf?)

My bank has a free coin counting machine too, so. I don't have to re-wrap them or lose money at a coinstar.

So what's the plan for selling the pennies? Who will pay 112% for a penny?

I have a whole trash can full of copper you could have if you were near me. People give away free copper everyday on craigslist. A bunch of other shit too. Like people with fruit trees will let people come and pick as many fruits as they can handle for free. You could collect fruit and sell it on the corners or at the Home Depot like the Mexicans do. Fix up free grills. This penny collecting scheme is going to put you in the cheese line if you keep it up.
