Stirring a Malt Extract LC
    #25544827 - 10/17/18 02:11 PM (6 years, 3 months ago)

What's up Shroomery, it's been a few years.

I flew in a beautiful syringe of B+ and shot it into a few WBS jars which took right off, using the rest to knock up a Karo LC. My Karo Kulture took off within a week with all kinds of floaters, although I missed the marble/stir bar/broken glass to agitate the Myc.

I got one hell of a deal on a magnet stirrer package, and I sucked some of the myc out of my Karo Kulture and popped it into some jars filled with Extra Light Malt Extract culture, filled at 4 percent. I slid 1/4 a tablespoon into a couple of the jars but labelling them slipped my mind.

My stir bar doesn't sit in the middle of the jar even on center, it just slips around the corners of the jar and doesn't create a vortex. The particles of the DME always settle right back to the bottom, I swore I saw a fat fluff of myc in one but it dissolved as soon as I shook the jar.

Mycelium seems to hold volume in LC jars, the DME all sets at the bottom while the myc strands reach upwards. I honestly can't tell if it's Myc or polyfil, but it dissolves when I hand swirl the jars, so most likely myc.

I have read threads that suggest leaving a stirrer on 24/7, but I'm not sure if that's the best for growth, with as delicate as Mycelium can be. Along with the rounded bottoms of my jars keeping the stirrer from creating a vortex, I'm worried about agitation hindering growth of Myc that's been eating Karo it's entire life, switching over to those tasty homebrew sugars.

Should I leave my jars alone while the Myc recovers among the DME at the bottom of the jars, for a day or three? If I eyeball them hard enough I can tell the difference between myc and DME particles, but I'm not sure about leaving them alone, or stirring them up.

To answer you, stirring always might hinder growth. i'd let it sit and stir when clumping. I recommend straining to make clarity a priority.

I'm going to plug my soft agar LC tek here. Make a bottle of soft agar for LC.

Shake it and the bubbles will colonize faster than you'll believe. The longer the bubbles are suspended before settling the better I'd assume.

Bubbles are fractals and can provide near-infinite surface area in the bottle. Similar to Apollonian gasket(3D is Apollonian Network).. It also provides the 02 necessary for growth exactly where it needs it.

Or Gabriel's horn "(also called Torricelli's trumpet) is a geometric figure which has infinite surface area but finite volume"

So.. the "frothier" (yet stable) you make it, the faster that it will colonize. Less is more if you can achieve that, but then you have less LC/bottle. Trade-off.

Reduce your LC colonization time and your myc won't get sick of the nutes so fast, you'll also end up eating mushrooms "fresher" than you've ever had before. Simply because you can colonize so much faster, even from spore..

hijacked, my bad. I love this shit.

That is sweet, thanks!

If the agar LC seems to work the best, I'll pick some up and knock it up with my Karo mixture.

Everything I've read says DME colonizes in days, but it's day 3 and I'm still not seeing anything. I made sure I got plenty of myc into my karo syringe, and my DME jars seem to only have plenty of sediment. I swear at times they look wisped together, but that breaks apart when I stir them. I'm still trying to find the happy medium between stirring to encourage growth, and not stirring so much as to harass the mycelium.

I guess part of what I'm trying to wrap my head around includes how spawn needs to hold still for a few days while the myc takes hold, yet myc apparently grows just fine in the vortex of a magnet stirrer. Even that I can't make a vortex with the curved bottoms of my jars, maybe just need longer stir bars.

I'm trying to get 'frothy yet stable', what do you mean?

I stir my LC jars twice a day for about 2 minutes of as high speed stirring as the bar can handle before breaking the magnetic force. Using 2" stir bars.

Since I only have one stir plate, I rotate between my jars.  I like to run them for a few hours then let them rest for a day,  but I've ran them constant with no issues.

I've gotten carried away with my cultures since this post, I had one culture take the fuck OFF and sucked some myc out of it to, I guess, homogenize the rest of my culture jars.

I have like a dozen of these things now, which makes way more active mycelium than I know what to do with! I read that LCs don't need too much FAE, but I count my jars with 2 polyfill holes to a TON better than the jars with just one. The LC with the RTV on it is barely growing, at all.

The jar that took off, I added some more karo mixture to it, as I used a lot of it to make some more LCs and inoculate my next WBS batch.

Despite reinnoculating, NONE of my LCs are doing as stellar as this one. I just don't get it; time, stirring, and none of my pints match this juggernaut,

Anyone ever hear that Joan Baez song, Diamonds and Rust? I prefer the Judas priest version.

I took an old drillbit and iso'd it down, after seeing it aggressively hang on to my BellCo, I thought about how I should have used a wide-mouther, but the pressure cooker was on and I was already too late.

Diamonds! Diamonds and Rust!
