Solutions on poverty

What would you propose as a solution to poverty?

What if we put boots on the ceiling so that you could actually pull yourself up, assuming you have adequate upper body strength, by your boot straps?

Or we could stop spending untold sums on death and destruction and start taking care of our citizens.

One of those ideas is better than the other.

Free electrical energy. Free energy means people aren't as dependent on the government, and a good set of grow lights/grow equipment means they can grow most of their food, and purify their water themselves by boiling it or corona discharge, etc.

So their cost of living then comes down to paying their rent and buying clothes.

But with enough communes, there is no need for anybody to really pay rent. Poverty isn't a problem so much as the way society is structured is a problem. By our standards, native americans were in "poverty" before europeans colonized their land. But if you ask them, they probably would rather go back to that "poverty" than have to sit around on stolen land and chase paper.

Going around saying everyone is in "poverty" and needs money, well they got along just fine for thousands of years without money. So I'm pretty sure they don't need it. Society and governments create a situation where people need "money" or "currency" to live comfortably free of harassment and disease.

That's the problem. Not poverty itself.

Hydroponics. No need for soil. Most crops can be grown hydroponically and usually end up growing faster. As long as technology is available, people might as well use it.

EDIT: also, mycorestoration could be used for example, to hyperaccumulate toxic heavy metals or break down hydrocarbons and such, in organic hydroponic solutions. Or just use aquaponics.

Hydroponic fertilizers are expensive , bugs will eat everything and it only takes one little thing to go wrong to end up completely fucked .
That’s not a practical solution for everyone , it takes allot of space too . If you live in an apartment you don’t have enough of it  to sustain yourself .
The days of living off the land are long gone , deer would dissapeared around the turn of the century just like the buffalo if it wasn’t for hunting regulations and game management .

And decentralized farming is extremely inefficient. One mechanized farm consisting of a just a few farmers can grow enough food for thousands of people. We are better served with specialized work forces, if everybody was growing their own food there'd be no time for doctors, or school, or science. As can be noted by the life of humans for the majority of our existence.

I do think decentralized power distribution presents a major loss of control for the existing hegemony. I hope to get solar installed in the next couple of years and while I won't be able to do a battery immediately I hope to get it eventually.

Decentralized power is going to be especially important to areas where running grids is impractical or no financially beneficial. Those areas stand to gain the most, though I think lots will benefit.

I do think poverty is different than quality of life. It should be noted that we can provide great quality of life even for those who are impoverished. Really, this should be the goal. Wealth should not be the single biggest driver of quality of life.

Reduction of the global population produces a reduction on the strain on resources and a higher standard of living.

We don't need as many people today, too many are unproductive.  Humans always have a way of thinning out the herd, it's inevitable.

It’s actually Mother Nature that does that , when humans do it it’s called gonocide .

I have solar panels on my house , I make allot less electricity during the winter . So much less I have to buy power from PG&E . Good luck with that .

Only flaw in your post.

There's way too many doctors, and way too many flaws with the health care system and education system, and scientists face way too much red tape as it is.

Too many doctors in the western world are only in it for the money. We need less doctors, and less need for them. If enough people were growing their own food, they'd be consuming less crap that causes them health problems which they are lead to believe requires a doctor to treat.

Automated systems take care of the time issue also. People just aren't happy eating less meat. I'm not a vegetarian but people eat way too much damn meat. It's one way people become hooked on governments and technology.

If you want to live in a big city you should accept that it's not a sustainable way of living the way we're doing it, and it's your responsibility to grow your own food.

As someone with a lot of experience with large scale(and small scale) hydroponic systems, I can say for a fact it is NOT expensive. It's only expensive if you want a hydro shop to hold your hand for you and help you along with the process. There is enough of the basic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in human urine to supply most of a plant's needs. The rule is, one bladder per gallon of water, or more accurately, enough to barely add color to the water... People on overgrow.com were growing high quality herb on piss alone.... The rest is just supplemental and adjusting for individual plant species needs in terms of specific minerals/elements and pH is not difficult.

That's also why aquaponics is a great idea. Again, most of the nutrients are supplied by fish waste. Certain fish are also not picky at all and very tough. Then, you've got meat and produce. It doesn't take as much space as people think either. "enough to sustain yourself" depends on how fat you want your belly to be, and how much of your food intake you want to be independently produced.... There's an obesity epidemic in the US and much of the west.

Obviously it depends on use, array size, location, etc.

A friend of mine that I went to college with bought a house down the street from me. His array generates extra power. In my area the solar index is decent and if your home is oriented the correct way you can really make some juice. It just so happens that my home is in a great location and oriented with my end gables north and south, I have a large reasonably shallow roof angle with few roof protrustion, and my garage is the same. A 10 kwh array would be easy to achieve, my family averages around 9.5 kwh in the summer months. Personally I'd probably buy a 6-8kwh array and hope that I more than break even over the year.

And prices will continue to fall drastically. Solar is cheaper than coal now, as China and India ramp up panel prices are going to tumble.

I’ve been growing weed for 15 years so I know a little about it also .
You need lights and ventilation systems . Aquaponics takes even more space , once again not realistic for people in city’s and suburbs .

Lol , you can’t just piss on your plants .... do u have a chemistry degree ? How are going to process your piss into usable fertilizer ?

It doesn't take as much space as you're thinking. It's very realistic.

The urine water requires no processing. Ammonia as a nitrogen source is actually more bioavailable to plants roots than nitrates.... Although it can burn them easier if I recall correctly.

If you think I'm making this up, try it. Google the urine thread on overgrow

Ok it’s easier than I thought , stockpiling containers of urine and urine water in your apartment seems a little gross though .
How much space you need depends on what you want to grow , I could see myself growing plenty of lettuce in a spare bedroom but what about corn and wheat ?
