I've only used other than MEA once... standard 10g to 500ml recipe... maybe try unwrapping fully colonized dishes to stimulate pinning?

Looks more like something bad. IMO. In my experience, a single APE pin is pretty rare (although certainly not impossible). An old plate will have TONS of pins everywhere as that's the nature of APE. And they look like tiny little miniature APE fruits. I have a few super old plates I left at room temperature that I can find for you.
Not mine, but notice how many knots and pins and fruits there are?

I'd imagine the plate would dry out immediately. Maybe cracking the Parafilm or something. Or just wait like 2 months and find fruits. I personally would prefer to just clone something from the first flush than to wait around trying to fruit a plate. I do remember casing and fruiting a plate when I just got started though, ha.

I've had fully colonized, unwrapped plates sit for 2 weeks or longer without drying... I'm with you though, and prefer to clone from my initial MS tubs... cased a plate? Interesting

I've been using rye flour and brewers yeast instead of MEA, does it matter what kind of dry malt extract I get? Or is it more or less same (result).

From my understanding, only really changes the color and clarity of your plates... never used dark malt personally though...

I just stated using MEA for the first time. Sure is pretty but think I still prefer BRF or grain water agar. I’ll give it a good chance though, got a good size bag of it.

Ohh I can see how that would be VERY useful.
When i do a run of agar plates where i use malt extract and i pour at 50c and stack the dishes i expect to be able to see just about every contam.
It's already pretty clear but I haven't started using spores yet.

How do you gauge the strength of your grain soak water?
Rain a batch of plates using grain water, then grain water with a little dextrose. All transferred from MEA.
None look like the parent plate. Some adapted quick, some look to hate it completely. I'll get pics when I get home tonight. Was trying to get them to grow out a little more, but they are growing slow.

I personally don't, but I prep my grain in more or less the same way everytime - just a bit more than enough water to cover them all when hydrated. I use undiluted stuff too. Diluting is for pussies.

I'm impressed you can cultivate anything in The Mist. Doesn't look like you shook those jars at all. Did you? At glance, it does look a little bacterial with the ultra thick and ropey mycelium. But you need to take some better pictures because I have no clue what I'm really looking at.

I'd Imagine it highly variable depending on the length of the soak and whether you pre-rinse or not

Why so foggy? Hard to see, but that last jar seems creamy near the bottom... may indicate the presence of bacteria

Yes. Depending on the jar, anywhere from 10%-30% colonized.

These are the best of a bunch. Im disappointed in the quality too. Cell phone... Lense all scuffed...
If they were a little clearer, maybe you ( of ALL people)would have noticed the clouds in the background....

I think I might of actually concentrated my water. Reduced it and filtered out the sediments. Took a cupcake pan, and used it like a ice cube trays. I'm probably going to make another batch but dialute it.
My hunch is I have to much nutes
If we used a refractometer, could we get some what of a consistent comparison? I know they use them in brewerys for things, and I use them at work to measure the concentration of oil in our cutting fluid.
