How often should you rotate agar medias?

When working with one culture, let’s say you have cleaned up some MS on agar. You have a good culture you want to keep around. How often should you switch media types to keep it healthy?

Make a slant, store it in a fridge that doesn't get opened often. Rotate out once a year or every second year. Changing type of media doesn't seem to be in anyone's storage protocol.

Ive used the same media for months at a time. Same media for entire ventures into one variety. Not nearly as big of a deal as its made out to be.

People do seem to overly romanticize the idea of swapping media’s around. To me it didn’t seem overly necessary either.

Most fungi have no/negative senescence anyway. They actually repair themselves from damage or copying errors.

Not that we're growing yeast but beer yeast can get "g2g'd" hundreds of times with no ill effect and that's using the exact same media too.

I don't know about "most".. is that right?  I know about Armillaria and Ganoderma being basically immortal but what edibles are?
Or what psychoactives?

About rotating media: I have a question related to this... is rotating media a function of how complete the nutritional profile is of the medium? That is: will a culture get "bored" with a medium because it is lacking something or for other reasons which actually have to do with mixing it up a bit..

What if you would make PDA, MEA and other media and you mixed them all.. then would you still need to rotate?

Seems like the absolute best medium would be something extremely rich like that (yet it should still be balanced), especially if it included extra thiamine and other nutritives to compensate for the amount lost by PC'ing for an average/reasonable time.

My answer to the OP, or my point is: maybe the answer to your question depends on how nutritionally lacking or unilateral your current medium is.

    I only use MEA... Standard for transfers, and soft (6.5-7.5g per 500ml of water) for spore germination and SAGARI
