Found my firsts chants. Past it but that’s okay!

First time finding chanterelles, even though they are decaying and mouldy I’m just chuffed they can be found in the locality. I’m thinking aurora or perhaps cibarius given the coniferous habitat. Any suggestions?

I seriously doubt these are chantarelles... It looks like something else being attacked by Hypomyces or some other parasitic fungi, but I have no idea what.

Definitely NOT cantharellus, chanterelle grows under oak not pines or any other conifer species. I don't know what you have, but I do know what you don't have.

In the PNW they are very fond of Douglas fir and Hemlock, both conifer species.  I have also found them in high elevation mixed fir lots.

Tks, for the correction piggy, now I need to reread the description and habitat again. I personally have never seen them grow under anything but oak species.

We're backwards out west :wink:

Our chants refuse to grow under oak and pop up under conifers.

Our chants also don't get munched on by bugs, at all.  Nary a maggot in sight.

I just reread the description and habitat,  nothing is said about a mycorrhizal association with conifers, but it does say they need more study in North America and recommends that all trees in toppling range be listed as possible associates. Cantharellus is in need of more study in North America, they do not completely match European species.

According to my guide which has led me astray on more than one occasion, aurora favours conifers and cibarius can sometimes be found with conifers.

There was lots of those, well what I believe are hygrophoroposis although I’m probably wrong again. Might it be a sick one of those? Damn the lines on them really threw me

Where I live, C. cibarius grows mainly with Fagus, Betula and Picea, also occasionally with Quercus and Pinus.
It seems to me that they favour different host species depending on where you are, possibly they are more picky with local microclimate
and conditions than with specific host species.

I can't remember where I read it, but species of Cantharellus apparently take a long time to establish proper mycorrhizal relationships
before they start fruiting. Might also be why they tend to be pretty stationary, coming up annually at the same spots for years and years.

In Europe, I regularly find species from C. cibarius complex in pure spruce forests and mixed spruce and birch forests. They are not very common or prolific there, but there are definitely no hardwood trees nearby.
My most prolific spots are in hornbeam forests with some beech and oak trees.
So I'd say they definitely prefer oak and other hardwoods, but are also able to grow with certain conifers.

They're quite common here throughout the whole country, apart from maybe the very northern lapland. I recall some finnish sources saying that they're mycorrhizal with birch trees, but I've found them in pure spruce and pine forests where there hasn't been birches nowhere to be seen. Usually very mossy forests. Oak trees grow naturally only in the very southern part of Finland.

I have been really interested in this genus, collections have been made within about a hundred miles of my house encompassing 4 counties so far.

I plan to start sending specimens out this coming year for DNA sequencing to see what we have, I think Alan told me March would be a good time to send them to him.
 
Cantharellus cinnabarinus is the only species I've seen growing around conifers but it was a mixed forest. I am Also familiar with one in California that grows around Douglas fir and spruce (I think it's spruce).

European species I believe have been documented very well, it's the North American species that are being thrown into disarray by DNA. I figure if I spend $30 a month on tobacco and bullshit, I could put it to better use and help figure out what some of the different species are here at home.

We could all do more to help by listing All the trees in toppling range of this genus whenever we post our observations, including saplings.

That is definitely something I am interested in, but only if you are willing to go the extra mile and document the tree species in toppling range, do spore prints and post pictures on mushroomobserver.org,  that way you and I can use the MO# to keep track of each specimen, it is also one of the places where I will post my findings. The spore print, tree species and pictures will help compare the known macroscopic taxonomy with the DNA sequences to see if the macroscopic taxonomy for identification will stand up to the DNA evidence and phylogenetics.

I wouldn't ask for all of that if it wasn't an important part of a collection, it is important to note any color changes during the drying process, whether or not the cap is bald or has fine hair (for lack of a better word), are the gills false gills, veined, do the gills change color? 

If you don't mind doing all that and sending it to me, I would be tickled pink. Just think of it as a contribution to the science of mycology.

Citizen science is the best, you learn amazing things and meet cool people all while giving something back.

My friend, I have a degree in Natural Resources Technology specializing in Forestry.

If there's one thing I can do, it's survey trees.

Do you have a particular template you prefer for surveying trees?  Or would just taking note of specie and age at each find work?  I find the presence of under story plants and bryophytes to be just as significant as the trees present.
