Cereus vs Trichocereus Peruvianus
    #2553968 - 04/13/04 12:31 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I know this is a stupid question that has probably been answered.... but is there a certain defining characteristic to look for when trying to distinguish between the two? I have what was sold to me as a Trichocereus by a specialized nursery, but after looking at other greenhouses and finding MANY cereus Peruvianus I can't really tell if mine is the Tricho or not.... the only possible difference I see between the two is the spikes..... is there something else I can be looking for? and if the spikes are the only defining characteristic what distinguishes between the two?
Please help....

Trichocereus pachanoi (san Pedro is a different cactiu than the genera Cereus. many plant shops sell Cereus cacti which are not Trichocereus genera.

I believe Cereus have deeper ribs and less of a blue coloration than Trichs do. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Cereus is any easy group to separate from trichocereus. Trichs are rounder. Cereus are thin looking.

Ok, heres a cereus. See how narrow the ribs are?

Trichocereus peruvianus. See the diffrence. It's fatter, theres less space inbetween the ribs.

Thank you all..... unfortunately, based on Harvey's pictures I think i've been sold the wrong thing.... thats ok though..... its still a beautiful specimen.
Anyone know of a different forum specifically dedicated to cactus and succulents that aren't entheogenic?
