Should the forum have a Downvote (-1) button? 4

Curious about what the general consensus is on this. As someone said to me recently:
Quote:
it mostly just seems strange to have the + without the -. It's like having the rating system but only allow people to leave 5 shrooms.
Could it help to limit trolling, even if but a little? .

It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

Society should not be filled with apathetic bystanders. The -1 belongs with the +1

The addition of the +1 created a huge decrease in the frequency of people quoting a big long post just to add “This” or “”. It created a way to show concurrence without making an extra post in the thread to express it. I don’t see why a -1 button wouldn’t work similarly (but probably to a lesser extent).
I think it’s been brought up before though, and if I’m remembering right, the admin response was that it would create an opportunity for trolling. Folks going through and down voting every post made by someone they dislike, that kind of thing.

I think it’s a good idea, so that means no one will like it and you should delete this thread and not post anything else for the rest of the day

If the +/- is anonymous the trolls don't get the satisfaction that the person they are trying to troll knows who they are which ruins half the fun for most of them and if the +/- is only an indicator of the social aspect of things, i.e. it doesn't actually DO anything technical like move threads to the top or down based on votes, than it doesn't really matter. If someone's thread is getting downvoted its for a reason, either the thread legitimately sucks, or the social aspect is carrying over because the person legitimately sucks. There will of course always be people who get down voted by assholes, but that's not really any different than getting a bad rating because an asshole dislikes you, or calls you an idiot in a thread you make.
I think it could be really useful for the cult forums as those are heavily moderated and watched, and on the social side it feels to me like it would help cut down on most response based drama/trolling as long as the downvote/upvote doesn't have any technical implications on the back end that can be gamed.

If the admins are unsure they could just test it as an option in your settings. If they think it's troll-worthy, yet so many think it might be fine, then I can't see much harm coming from people willingly braving this treacherously mild form of apathetic disagreement.

Neck and neck, and lots of good arguments for, but no one has spoken against with any logic or reason.
Is this simply due to the fact that we so often fear change as humans?

There is so much negativity runn9ing rife in the world today, must we add a function that makes it easy for people to be unkind in a click of a button in virtual anonymity?

As far as the cultivation forums go it's more kind because it will help new growers navigate better.

I get what you’re saying, it’s a valid point. But I also wonder if it might decrease negativity if people could just downvote and move on, rather than starting a verbal disagreement/argument when they see something they don’t like. Similar to how the +1 stopped unnecessary posts of agreement (quoting the post they agree with to say “yes”, that kind of thing). Obviously there’ll still be arguments, but maybe not as many. But we don’t live in an ideal world where people wouldn’t use a -1 function outside of its intended use, so I understand your concern.
Remember when the shroomery operated on a point based system, where you’d accrue points for various things that could be cashed in for rewards? It didn’t end up working out so well, but it was good to try it out so we’d know whether it worked or not. And when that feature was done away with, we were just back to where we’d been before it, not worse off.

That's my thinking also.
Just like the Blue + Red pills in your sig Asante, it makes no sense to have one without the other.

ESO forums used to have an "LOL" button for when people made a funny post it ended up being used by the broader community to ridicule people's ideas -- someone writes pages of suggestions and gets flooded with LOL's as a result the turning point seemed to be when unappreciated changes were announced for the game, the staff member who posted would get flooded with LOLs
they eventually removed the LOL button all together, leaving three buttons titled Awesome, Agree, and Insightful there is no longer a way to mark a post as having been funny there is no longer an informal way to mark as post as having been 'bad'
at the time, it was my position on the forums that if there was no way to dislike a post there should only be a +1 button rather than three +1 buttons of late, Insightful is progressively being used to ridicule ideas; the removal of the 'dislike' feature simply changed what was recognized as the dislike feature am fond of the balance Shroomery's system strikes
am sort of with Asante on this do recognize how it could be productive, and how it has been used effectively in places like Reddit but it is not really conducive to discussion, and can make contributions feel meaningless
that said, am also in favour of there not being a +1 system, so my more general position skews away from there being a +/- system

This is probably an unpopular idea but for cultivation forums I could see getting rid of the +1 and implementing only a -1 being a great change.

Maybe for the pub but for cultivation some way to curate what info is crap to avoid is pretty much the only thing we need. Our no.1 problem in cultivation is people picking crap methods because they've been guilded with science words or ridiculous claims.
