Calcium chloride dihydrate

Hey everyone, wondering about the substitution of silica packets with homemade calcium chloride dihydrate packets.  A big tub of it was found at the dollar store, and I'm wondering if this stuff acts the same as silica.  Thank you!

I remember seeing rice in the salt thingy for salting dinner to keep the salt dry. Maybe rice as a organic choice if you happen to have dreads or don't eat animals?

I remember the rice in salt as well.  I just wonder if this stuff will be as sure fire as silica when storing dried mush

I used to store mushrooms in a simply folded doggy bag on top of my fridge where RH is 0% at all times. How they gon rehydrate in 0%? Well actually 0% is not 100% zero, there's some minute levels that will get attracted maybe after some time but never hapened to me. So I stead of worrying about the silica stuff pay more attention to store the shrooms in a dry place.

Is there no chemists here who can explain if this calcium chloride dihydrate works in the same manner as silica?  I tried wikipedia and found that the FDA regulates anhydrous calcium chloride as a food packaging aid in keeping things dry.  Would there be any reason why the dihydrate would be unfit to use?

If it's properly dried,  and in air tight containers there's no need for any of it IME :shrug:

To answer your question: Yes it will. Fill homemade tea bags made from coffee filters or muslin so you don't have powder floating around everywhere.

If you own it, use it, otherwise if you store your mushrooms properly, there's no need.

Yeah but you wanna recharge desiccants like this when they are hydrated, usually in an oven.

However off the top of my head the dihydrate is not a serious level of hydration for CaCl2.

I use both silica beads and CaCl2 as desiccants. Not exactly sure how rice tends to compare as a desiccant to the chemical ones but I do know that chemical ones differ by both their capacity to absorb water and how reactive this happens. What the latter means is that as long as there is still capacity to absorb water left, more reactive desiccants will keep going to dry out the environment more.

CaCl2 is good for capacity to absorb, more than reactivity.
