A weird idea
    #2553208 - 04/13/04 03:01 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

Disclaimer: This idea is not meant to stand up to close scrutiny, it is more of a conversation piece that slips out after a few drinks. I entertain this notion sober, so "drugs are bad" jokes are not appropriate

When I think about structure systems, I like to find other ways to mentally represent them. For example, organelles work together to keep my cells alive which form tissues. These tissues make organs and organ systems. The end result is an organism...me.

Well, what if this type of system is realized by the universe...humans are organelles working to keep planets alive which form solar systems, which are the building blocks of galaxies. These galaxies combine and the end result is...a universe.

Not so epic, but this too. Consider society an organism. All that it implies (land, natural resources, people, education, jobs) can be broken down into cascading structures. Society is like an organism, it evolves, it is self sustaining.

What do you think?

Ideas are new to me when I think of them and old to me after I express them.

Has this been here before? It is similar to something Trendel posted...so I apologize to anyone if I reproduced an idea that someone posted and I didn't catch.

The Universe has rules, and it has patterns. You say that it works from smallest to largest but couldn't it easily work from largest to smallest, getting more and more complex as your go down in scale?

A hurricane is a vortex of gas. The same happens to galaxies. You can notice the same pattern happening on different scales. Chaos theory says that different scales you look at a pattern will reflect the whole like a fractal. This makes some sense to me, but I look on the system a little differently... and I don't think planets are "alive"

Excellent thoughts. I think that society does indeed fall into the 'cascading stucture' you described. So does everything in the universe. What can we learn from this? Well, I'm not sure(the story of my life~)... I think that although there IS structure in everything, there is also chaos thrown in, which is the unknown factor. And out of all these patterns and systems, even though there is set stucture , the ultimate pattern of the universe is random, unpredictable, spontaneous.... As far as what this mean? Who knows, just that the world is unpredictable, and at any time a stable system can become unstable without further warning or signs that 'follow the pattern'.

I see the relation between the macrocosm and the microcosm as a fractal design in terms of continous and evolving structure.
Not only humans make part of this structure, every living creature does.

Reminds me a little of James Lovelock's Gaia Theory, which views the Earth as one living organism, of which all of its life forms are components.
How seriously I'll take this sort of theory depends on just how literally/scientifically it intends to be taken. I'll buy it on a philosophical/metaphorical level, but other than that, it's a little shaky.
