First Colorado Mushrooms for 2004
    #2553052 - 04/13/04 02:21 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

OK, it's still a few weeks early for even the morels to come up, but we just had about 5 days straight of rain, so I had to go look. Morels are still 2 or 3 weeks off, but the Oyster Mushrooms are up.

Those are Pleurotus pulmonarius. The largest cap is about 8 inches across.

Happy mushrooming!

I concur with GG. Perfect photo. How do you plan on cooking those? They look very tasty.

I just fry 'em in butter with some garlic.

Honestly, I gave those in the photo away to some people at the Mycological Society meeting on Monday. One guy was going to clone 'em, and the others were going to eat 'em. I find more Oyster Mushrooms than any ordinary human could eat, and I leave most of them out in the woods. I've still got 10 or 20 pounds in the freezer.

Happy mushrooming!

If you happen to meet this guy again, please ask him if he would be willing to pass a culture for the Shroomery members.

A related question:
What species would you say the mushrooms in this thread are?

I'll ask him when I see him next. And, of course, if he was successful.

Given the springtime growth, I'm inclined to go with Pleurotus populinus. A number of specimens of what I found were somewhat like those in appearance and color. Their caps seem to darken with age. P. cornucopiae is also similar to those. As far as I know, the definitive way to differentiate them is that P. populinus is monomitic and P. cornucopiae is dimitic. So a little time with a microscope and a specimen should give the answer.

Happy mushrooming!
