Pink oyster pins aborting ? Help me identify what's wrong?
    #25530007 -

Hey there, I'm new to growing edible mushrooms, but I've done some reading.

I bought a pink oyster kit and built a shotgun with a couple inches of perlite. It's been at around 23-26 Celsius and I Force air exchange and mist twice a day. I make sure to mist more if I don't see any water drops on the walls.
I grew a lion's mane successfully, but the damn pink oyster has pinned twice and the pins seem to abort shortly after.

Any clue what I'm doing wrong?

I'm new to growing pinks as well, but i've found that i never had luck with them in a SGFC.  As soon as i ditched the SGFC, i started having much better luck.
Still working on dialing in a reliable method and i may try using a martha tent at some point but i'm definitely not going back to the shotgun... they just wouldn't develop properly in there for me.

What kind of substrate are you using?  What sort of containers?  Bags?

its in a bag and I can tell that the substrate is mainly wood chips and sawdust, but I'm not sure if it has any supplements or anything else.

I'm tempted in making my own substrate and using this kit to inoculate new bags so I can test other methods (and leave the SGFC for my lions mane only).

Maybe I might try just a humidity tent. What are you using now @locospacebean, I might try that too and see how it goes.

Edit: I'm wondering if its too humid or not enough air exchange that is the issue with the SGFC

Now that you pointed out that the issue could be the SGFC i google for oysters in SGFC and found the following text (which is that I'm going to test)

http://thedeathryder.blogspot.com/p/fruiting-chambers-how-to-select-build.html
" For species like oysters that need a lot of fresh air exchange, it is recommended to leave the lid off entirely.  Cakes in a shotgun fruiting chamber should be misted (sprayed with a water bottle) twice daily before being fanned.  See the species page for specific cultivation instructions regarding your mushroom of choice. "

I'm actually using straw in buckets, inoculated with colonized rye grain.

I just stack the buckets up in a room that gets lots of natural, diffuse sunlight.  The RH is usually around 75-85% and the temperature fluctuates between 23-28 celsius.

I mist them very lightly 2-3 times a day.

My issues haven't been getting them to fruit, it's been with contamination, which i think is due to my pasteurization process with the straw.

I've even just put buckets out on my patio and they've fruited!

Thanks for the reply.
I guess that is allot different from my reality (indoor apartment growing). But I appreciate the response, It gave me some good things to think about. I'll update if things change once i do different tests.

Adding soap helps saturation.

I've read about that a few times but have yet to try it.

I currently steam pasteurize my soaked straw in a large pillowcase inside of a large Coleman cooler hooked up to a steam cleaner, with a probe temperature sensor buried in the straw.

There's definitely a few vectors of contamination that i haven't been able to control very well, or have been sloppy with that are likely to blame for my failures.

So I'll start with lots of folks on here don't like me so if you want add yourself to the list. I see a few problems off the bat.
1. While your girl appears to be pretty, she should cover herself for shame cause Allah! Nah just playing!!! No matter how clean she said she showered, she's a dirty girl. In fact we're all really dirty especially our fingers and under our finger nails..... She should be wearing a germ or dust mask (like dentist style) also disposable gloved. If you get sick of watching your carbon footprint grow by each time get chemical resistant gloves and bleach before you make your buckets!
☆Edit#? Most contaminates are low to the floor. Why not leave the Coleman on a counter or anywhere off the floor. Again kind of dirty.
2. Soap helps remove the natural wax that coats the straw making sterilizing more effective.
3. Gypsum helps buffer PH as well as binding together in a better way. I use it for straw and wood chips.
4. Additionally adding burnt ash will help. It will change the ph thus making it harder for the nasties without messing with the spawn.
5. Do you close holes with micropore tape?
I hope this helps. FYI wasn't being a dick about your ole lady (if I didn't have a bad sense of humor I wouldn't have one at all)but clean procedure leads to clean results. Plus pic showed me your skimping out on being clean, which I would identify as your problem. GL.
PS don't forget to throw me a shitty rating!

FEA and temperature.  Pinks like it hot. Like hotter than you would want your house. Unless you like walking around in your underwear. We only grow them mid summer, too clod rest of the year. They'll grow in kinda cold but super slow and really thick.

I think that the tone in this thread need to change a bit. There is no need for this much salt. Let’s all take a chill pill so i don’t need to come back with a hammer or locks.

Also I wear gloves when I spawn but, only because I don’t feel like cleaning shit out from under my nails later.
