Security tips that EVERYONE should read twice! 1

I pulled this from an OverGrow.com forum post, but I found it very applicable and helpful to the Shroomery as well.
Edit, March 2006: Just a friendly reminder lest it slips your mind while the below story encaptivates you: I'm sure you've all heard the news about Overgrow. With that in mind, I have editted the links to include a typo just in case you click on it by accident. If you still want to visit the original link, just change the type ``overEDITgrow'' to ``overgrow''. Stay safe! -daba
http://www.overEDITgrow.com/edge/showthread....highlight=bilbo
Yep, it's long, but it should be a good read.
We all know that loose lips are the primary reason people get busted, pure and simple. I?d guess at least 90% of the time, the eagerness to flaunt a nice grow is what ends up fueling the eventual takedown. Word spreads like an STD in a city high school. That?s great, because it gives us control over the most hazardous aspect of growing. Just keep your mouth shut ? brag on here. You?ll get kudos aplenty while expanding the knowledge base and receiving useful feedback as well.
But what of those other things that result in the freak incidents we all fear? What of issues regarding general intelligence and aptitude required to succeed in this art? Here are some of them, in no particular order:
1) UOFs ? Unintentional Online Fuckups. Mercy. During much lurking here, I?ve seen several people who appeared prudent and aware on the vast majority of their posts just flat-out give away their identity by offering way too much WHAT, WHEN, and HOW regarding their online purchases. In a very brief little hunt, I was able to ascertain the identity of no less than 4 growers posting here.
The need for people to flap their gums and spout off way too much information about their secrets has always been puzzling to me. There is no need to jump on here and tell everyone you got a great deal on a TDS meter unless that great deal is available for the rest of us. HOWEVER, when you go so far as to name the brand of the item, say you got it on eBay, say you just now won the auction and that nobody else bid on it, and follow it up with an exclamation of triumph about paying only $2.92 plus only $3.50 shipping, you?ve narrowed things down to where anyone can easily find you in seconds with an eBay search. Bad juju there, my friends.
Whether dealing with the police or voluntarily offering info online regarding the grow you surely are quite excited about, always offer only the info that?s necessary, nothing more. The less you say, the less there is to come kick you in the ass. Simple, eh? Anything you?re gonna post, give it a very critical once-over before you click the button, then repeat once it hits the site. I?ve seen people compromise their security in many different ways here with a too-loose grip on the flow of info. Be abundantly generous with the details that may help this community hone their growing skills, but shut off the information that may result in your becoming the plaything of an incarcerated situational sodomite?..or a group of them.
Watch your ass with the photos too. Twice I?ve seen images on here that had identifying objects in the background. One had a bulletin board with a insurance bill pinned on it. After about 30 seconds of Photoshop work, I had what was likely the address of a seriously felonious grow.
MORAL ? use your head. Assuming that it functions properly, it?s your friend!
2) SECURE YOUR HOME. Burglar alarms are quite popular for this, but I don?t like them. They?ve gotten quite a few people busted. Just ask Damon Stoudamire of the NBA?s Portland Trailblazers. Personally, if I?m not home, I?d rather have the bastard steal what he can, then get the fuck out of my house. Insurance will buy me the current model of everything that got pimped. Compare that to a mini-swarm of piggies descending upon your home while you?re off having a great time at a Deep Purple concert.
Good locks and lighting, alarm stickers, and a loyal dog are worth their weight in gold if avoiding situations that can indirectly lead to your discovery concerns you. Get kick plates for all exterior doors, and use a solid secondary lock accessible only from the inside.
Common sense in your everyday life goes a long way in avoiding trouble. I?ve heard of several busts caused by stoners failing to secure the dwelling before they leave. An open front door is an invitation to tons of trouble. Before you leave, survey everything and make sure you?re all locked up. Make it a ritual.
3) APPEARANCE - Don?t look like a scumbag or a recluse. Mow your yard, clean up trash. No need to socialize with neighbors who may not share your life?s plan, but still be friendly, if not downright gracious. If you cook a brisket, offer the neighbors a chunk. When raking leaves, don?t stop right on the property line between houses ? spend a few minutes doing a bit of the neighbor?s toil, like as on the side of the house, etc. See ?em carrying in something heavy? Offer a hand. See ?em painting out in the heat/cold? Go over and offer a Coke or coffee. See ?em OD on smack on the porch? Go give ?em a shot of adrenaline in the heart a la Pulp Fiction. Become known as a benevolent, but low-key individual.
Also, if you have a dispute with your neighbor(s), it is essential to be calm, reasonable, and dignified. Actually, you should do that all the time, but as a grower it becomes more vital. Handle your affairs with a deft sense of balance and reason, and you won?t become a local conversation piece. It?s basically the same rule as when you get a traffic ticket and plan to contest in court ? don?t do anything that makes you memorable.
Neighbors love to talk. Yip yip yip blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. On and on they go. People are wildly prone to jumping to conclusions based on little information, and your unmowed yard, scraggly dog, and Grateful Dead shirts are not your allies when trying to grow stealthily. They watch the company you keep, too. Off the bat, few people are allowed in my home. Those that are have to look and act in a civilized manner, no exceptions. If you have friends who like to drink too much, then have a ferocious domestic dispute, well, they ain?t invited to the New Year?s Party. Drunken loudmouthery has gotten many a stoner pinched as a disturbance call devolved into a possession situation, then a cultivation bust. Bummer!
4) FIRE! Fire scares me more than LEO. If you think about all the straight dumbasses who manage to turn their homes into piles of ash without any help from things like HPS/MH lites, fans, juryrigged wiring, etc., that equals a lot of charred carbon. But take these same dumbfounded dipshits and combine them with a hysterical excitement-fueled clandestine activity requiring safe and thoughtful work, and you have one word: TROUBLE.
Fire is perversely fucking scary. It?s like getting busted with some wholly unholy bonuses thrown in. Danger to family/pets. It would really suck if you killed your dog with sloppy wiring or a cardboard (!) and foil grow box. Some/all of your shit burned up. Vastly increased chance of discovery. Insurance not too terribly inclined to compensate, considering the circumstances. A total jumbo mega-fuck that must be avoided.
Once I knew some people who didn?t take care of any of their stuff. They had this dog that was never brushed, dust everywhere in the house (trailer, actually), and a cheap box fan continually running in the living room. The fan motor and rear grille was totally covered with what I call Redneck Kindling ? a matted mix of dog hair and dust. Clogs the motor and prevents heat escape both. Oh, and it?s quite combustible, too. The Molly Hatchet tapestry on the wall right behind the fan was not a great idea either. A couple of months after I warned them of what they had cooking in the corner, that trailer burned like a bowl of White Widow. There was no grow there, but they lost everything, including
MORAL ? no fire! Don?t confine your concerns to the grow area ? homes with no grows obviously burn down all the time. Scrutinize everything that might cause a problem. Pay special attention to anything with an electric motor. Ditch all the candles in the house and you immediately eliminate a major risk. Candles have gotten many busted. Smoke detectors are a must ? at least one for the house, and a separate one for the grow area. Make a rule that you can?t eat a bite of your meal until you verify that all cooking instruments have been shut off. Read safety and recall sites on the Web, be aware of what you have in your house, and if you have a doubt?.throw it out.
Put a fuse on everything in your grow. For under $10, you can put an inline fuse on every component of the average personal grow. It?s the cheapest insurance in the world.
5) STUPIDITY - For an example, check out my new POSTER BOY for the ?He Who Should NOT Grow? division, a most unfortunate soul named pimpsmack, who has to be one of the most butt-ass ignorant mofos I?ve ever encountered. First of all, when someone bothers to start a WRITTEN sentence by actually typing the word ?yo?, it?s not a good sign. Then he mentions he?s drunk. Oh yeah, and he?s trying to remote a MV ballast from a prefab security light and is in a panic to get it done. Never mind that you can?t grow with a MV lamp, PERIOD. Then he gets into a fight with those who gave him the exact info he needed, but he was too thick to come close to realizing it.
Yo, this poor fellow has to be ?bout the most idiotic and pathetic person I?ve seen in much reading of OG. He even beats out the morons who post on here with excruciatingly detailed descriptions (even photos) of seed companies? stealth shipping methods. I mean, take a good look at this post:
http://www.overEDITgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?threadid=137193
It?s almost scary to think people so stupid can exist. I wonder if this boy drives a car?!?!?!? <shudder>
But??and I?ll be dipped in shit, it looks like he eventually came up with an HPS and got lumens outta it without getting fried like a truck stop burrito. Outlook is still poor, tho. We got a wannabe green-thumbed Eminem wannabe posting in a way that, combined with his antics in the above linked thread, clearly indicates that he?s trouble waiting to happen. Confusion readily apparent here:
http://www.overEDITgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?threadid=138338
http://www.overEDITgrow.com/edge/showthread.php?threadid=138325
MORAL ? if you ain?t got the right stuff, don?t bother. Stick with dealers or smoking nutmeg or banana peels. Even though we are likely all better off if Darwinism does its thing as you ice yourself via electrocution or fire (or choking on a Tic-Tac), you?re still endangering your neighbors due to the propensity of the police to occasionally storm the wrong house and shoot innocent people. Remember, it?s the stupid people who get raided most.
If you can?t write anything resembling a coherent sentence, if you type the word ?yo? in actual serious conversation more than 3 times a year, if you get fucked up on booze and work on electrical appliances you know nothing about, if you don?t have the common sense to find out what kind of light you need before you run to Casa de Pot and buy the wrong shit, if you can?t understand simple and effective solutions offered to you by articulate people, and if you lash out at those same people, then you may lack the intellect and psychological balance required to be a safe, successful grower.
Two pieces of advice, use the right one depending on whether you experience the bad or the worst case scenario. One or the other is certainly in your future. 1) Don?t bend over to pick up the soap. 2) Get some life insurance if you?ve sired any lil? mongrels with some unfortunate bubbleheaded teenage girl.
Runners up in the STUPIDITY derby would have to be the genetically unfortunate souls who expose, sometimes even including photos, the stealth methods used by bean sellers.
I could go on for hours, but this will suffice for now. Good luck to all that DESERVE it.

Very nice. Everything in here is common sense....
Consider your home a secured area, and go to all lengths available to make it so. Thanks for posting it!

well, as many should notice by now, american authorities actually are more worried about violent crimes than anything else. i havent noticed too many people on here say they got busted because the cops read they were growing a few shrooms.
Foremost they want people that directly hurt others. Most if not all on here are people experimenting. I agree that the ones making a profit on their hobby should be stopped. I work 40hrs a week, i earn my living. Selling drugs is cheating, the easy way out, i dont have much respect for those people.
Until people realize that the only reason there are criminals that make money off drugs is because the government themselves creates the business. If possesing drugs were legal, nobody could sell them as they do now. The government knows this, but the general public are a bunch of ignorant crybabies. Many cops would tell you and have told me they wish weed was legal, its just too tame to do harm, and prohibiting them MAKES them harmful. They know this, the old people dont

Thank you for taking the time to share this. I,m a new member, but have not posted or looked for advice as of yet. Your information has helped ease my fears a bit. I had already put a list together of things to adhere to! Things to say, things to avoid etc. I'm still a little timmid. I have no problem sharing my knowledge or techniques. After all, some of my earlier attempts went insanely afoul due to trying friends' techs. It would just be so nice to have a place to intelligently share information freely and responsibly. Please do not think of me as the snotty sort. I have simply found enjoyment in this type of research since I became diabled due to an injury at work. I think you know where I'm going with this. I would love to share & receive techs but am leary as to the overall security of this site. With that said, how secure is this site? Be gentle with your replies. This will be my first forum posting..LOL. Thanks again for the tips. Hope to hear from you soon Tdog

What's the point? This seems winded, to me. Let's discuss real stuff! Security is an honest and education issue. An idiot is an idiot. Should he pay because he's an idiot? Where's the honesty in that? Sounds very Hitler-esque, to me; much like our country, but a bit more subtle.

There have been several previous posts, that have spoken of language, grammar and such. The Internet does not need more jargon or Ebonics that everyone or no one understands. It comes across; dishonest. What is fascinating is the old saying, "What you don't know, won't hurt you." Nowadays, is a major and serious lie. What else is new?

No, he shouldn't even play. If you indulge in such activities, your actions speak for the whole, realistically.

MAN that dude made me crack UP! What a fuck head! I'm so glad I haven't run into anyone like that on the shroomery! I know they can get kinda crude in OTD, but at least the prerequisites for growing shrooms of patience and intelligence keep these people OUT!

dr0mni, actually the worst doper 'tards I've come across on the internet have been right here in the Shroomery, as unsolicitored PM'age. Overgrow has been a close runner up. The classic mantra, from the doper hedonist, is..."will this *fuck* me up?". They care nothing to the consequences, just getting ripped on any intoxicant; and I refuse to assist such people in harming themselves.
My thoughts: I believe the Shroomery clocks first place in the idiot awards, since so many people on this site are hard-core poly-users. One only has to look at the "Other Drugs Discussion" and "OTD" forums to be left in no doubt. This is not so in Overgrow, which has a strict policy of Cannabis and mushrooms only, such that the worst of the dopers are fast discouraged. It also ensures Overgrow remains drug casualty free. Not so in the Shroomery, where outside the cultivation forums, this often equates to brain dead drug fucked threads -- penned by junkies -- who won't make it to age 40, let alone as a clean skin, with an education, a career and a secured future. Sad but true.
Anyway, on topic to this thread, there's not much to swoon over in the inaugural c & p post...it's called common sense. But good you've posted it daba, since there's many a shroomery member who should take note but that's wishful thinking I suspect.

Like they said, This is common sense. But no doubt a wake up call. People were posting pictures of their outdoor grows, with EASILY IDENTIFIABLE items that could be spotted from 2000 feet in a chopper. Not only that but their city and exact location... Like, WHAT THE FUCK! It goes like this: Fuck up... Get busted.... learn. Thank god other people can learn mistakes for me...
