Lots of very small shiitake? (3782)
    #25522827 -

Hey guys,

Does anyone have any ideas on what causes shiitake blocks to put out a heap of tiny mushrooms instead of the normal 10 - 15 larger fruits? this is something I've been having a problem with recently, so have a few other growers I've spoken to but noone seems to know what causes the excessive pinning.

I've grown 3782 exclusively and never ran into this problem before. Substrate recipe hasn't changed (hardwood fuel pellets, wheat bran, gypsum and a small amount of lime)

Temps are hovering around the 60's

Anyone had this issue before?

Oh yeah, I had a couple blocks one time that were covered. The largest mushroom was about an inch in diameter. Don't have a clue why they pinned so heavy.(I'm talking 3782)

I've had that problem and actually still have. I asked spawn lab Mycelia and they said the problem is related to the strain (3782). So they advised me to try 3790, which is slightly better but still produces too many small mush. They're not easy to sell because they dry out too fast.

That's almost exactly how mine look frog. I've also been told it's strain dependent but I don't buy that explanation, since up until this point my 3782 culture has been putting out decent sized fruits. I'm trialing a few bags with 50% less supplementation to see if that makes a difference.

Why don't you try a different strain?
I have only grown this strain for Aussie Mush supplies
http://www.newgenerationmushroomsupplies.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&path=101_127&product_id=701

mushrooms are a decent size but the blocks have been rather unpredictable with the amount of mushrooms they put out. ( I don't have a lot of experience just fyi)Some blocks have put of 15 or so mushrooms, all decent sizes while others have only put out 3 or 4..  :justdontknow:

I have just received my 3782 spawn form them so i will be inoculating in the next day or two.

Keep us posted on your results.

A pic of the above mentioned strain.
FYI - i seem to recall a youtube video of someone growing lots of Shiitake and they said that they would remove a lot of the mushrooms form the block so that they were left with a certain amount. ( I can't remember the exact amount they said, maybe 15 or so, but the reason they gave for removing excess mushrooms was that if you left too many on the block the mushrooms would be smaller. )

I've also heard that thinning the blocks will result in the remaining pins growing larger. I've tried this using the "twist & pull" method and ended up basically destroying the block.. they're quite difficult to remove. Maybe I'll use a scalpel next time :strokebeard:

If you prune the pins from the block the remaining mush will indeed get bigger. But if you got a lot of blocks fruiting it's a hell of a lot of work and I've got enough work already

I don't know if that's second flush blocks bust, but if I got a yield like that first flush I lose money.
By the way I'm cutting down on bran at the moment, that seems to improve things a bit. I was at 20 % supplementation and I spawn at 10 %. My theory is that the myc is just over fed and produces too many pins. :frenchie:

I'm also trialling some blocks with 10% supplementation right now, I had the same thought about excessive supplementation causing bulk pins

It is the strain and the cooler temps, a bit warmer can help.

3790 also is a lot better as far as larger pins but it will still cover the block.

Hey Frog

Unfortunately this is first flush. I am disappointed with it too! More than happy to take anyone's advice on how I can get more out of my blocks!
this is what I did:
Once I took the blocks out the bag I hosed them down with water then placed them in my fruiting room. Temp is about 12 -15 degrees. Humidity about 90%.
Exhaust fan runs 24/7. I occasionally lightly sprayed the blocks with water till they started to pin( while in my FC)
The block in your profile pic look great! Wish mine looked half as good as them!
Any advice is very welcome.
Cheers

oh yeah,
Supplementation is about 20%
I have been using hardwood sawdust and rice bran with a little bit of gypsum.
ie
40 kg sawdust
10 kg rice bran
1 kg gypsum

Is hosing down blocks before fruiting a regular practice? never heard of that before.
Frog, also noticed the blocks in your profile pic are almost completely white, do you not allow them to brown before fruiting?

Hey Mangowaffle

I don't know if it is regular practice, as mentioned before, I don't have a lot of experience.
The reason I hosed them down is because I have seen someone on youtube do it and he seems to grow a LOT of shiitake. ( well I think he grows a lot)
here is the link to the video.
It TR from Earth Angel Mushrooms.

Ah I have seen a few of TR's videos but not that one. Definitely not something I've heard of before, I'm interested to hear others opinions on this :strokebeard:

I usually soak 8-10 hrs and hose them down before putting in chamber. Try to keep them moist until well pinned, I point my ultrasonic direct on the blocks for several days.

@Mango: I usually let them brown up to 10 weeks. It sometimes happens that I pull out too many bags when I got a lot of demand, IME if you pull them out at 8 weeks yield is slightly less, the browner they are the better they yield.

@Quad: I did like you, dunking them takes a lot of time though. Yield is guaranteed though and mush quality too.
After that video of TR I started hosing them down too and I must say yield is ok and it saves a lot of time if you're doing a lot of blocks.

@Bust: I've got the same recipe, so it must be sterilization or the quality of your spawn.

Thanks Frog

If my sterilisation isn't up to scratch wouldn't I get contamination issues rather than small yields?

Spawn was bought from a reputable seller here in Australia but I did expand it to my own sterilised grain..

Frog, I don't actually dunk , just cut tops off the bag and fill with water submerging the block. Later drain and hose off.

I've fruited blocks 6 months old before and gotten good yields. Not economical to wait so long, but is possible.

Hosing them down 2 or 3x daily until pins form is SOP.  Usually 4-5 days

Every time you expand you weaken it G1=agar clone (strongest) G2=agar to grain (strong). Etc, etc. It is possible to expand so far they straight up won't fruit, but that would be like G100. Most places sell master jars so you don't need to expand. And yeah if shit was contaminated you'd have contamination! That's a easy one. How many g2g have you done?

Re: Lots of very small shiitake? (3782) [Re: Tits on a bull]

I purchased the spawn from the company. Made a batch of bags and at the same time I used about half a cup of the spawn to inoculate some grain I had sterilised. I did this to 6 bags of grain. When they were colonised I kept them in a fridge. I have been using those 6 bags of spawn since. The first batch ( the batch I used the purchased spawn on) was also very disappointing.

If I cloned a mushroom, ( say one of my shiitake) then used the agar to inoculate grain, would that be G1? Would I get better results or would it be much the same?

The supplier does have master cultures that he sells but while I am learning I didn’t want to invest the money on it. Just in case I messed it up.

Thanks

Now you get it G1! Ideally  (though you won't want to) use the biggest one, cause you want aggressive growth. Make a ton of plates from one and then one tiny piece of G1 agar per grain bag. Shake after you add it, to spread myc. BAM!G1 for growth. G1=97%contamination free G2=73%contam free G3=57%cf(I think the numbers are even more drastic but have no time right now to look it up). Makes a difference. Tons of info about it.
PS don't forget to shit on my ratings

Great.
I have been making heaps of plates but have mostly used a bit of grain from the strains I purchased. Have done a few plates with tissue samples from some mushrooms too ( not a lot tho). Once I get nice mycelium growth on the plate I have been transferring  a wedge to a slant. Used one of the teks on here fo make the slants.
I haven’t used any of the slants I have made yet. It has just been A bit of  practice to get some experience.
More tissue plates coming up !
Cheers.

If you don't see any contaminations in your bags and if they turn white nicely, it doesn't necessarily mean that your sub bag is clean. Nasties can hide and during incubation they harm the myc of the mushroom you're trying to grow. As a consequence these bags will yield less, even if they look ok.
That's why it's important to be sure your sterilization procedure is 100 %.
IME it's better to expand commercial spawn, especially if you're running a commercial operation. If you make your own, there's statistically more chance that things go wrong. And even with commercial spawn things can still go wrong. It's a risky business :facepalm3:
