cross between Echinopsis pachanoi and Echinopsis peruviana
    #25521072 -

Hey guys just a quick question, i just bought 100 seeds of what is apparently a cross between Echinopsis pachanoi and Echinopsis peruviana, just wondering if that would be a good cross and if the resulting plant would be as safe to consume as normal san pedro? i'm just worried that they may produce some toxic alkaloids that may not be present in a pure breed?

sorry i know this is probably a stupid question

at this point i don't even grow for consumption i just really love growing cacti, but if im getting 100 i may want to give some seedlings away and i would not want anyone else to get sick

Hi

there is a current thread on this hybrid:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25513789

about your question regarding toxic alkaloids: it's highly unlikely because the hybrid would only receive genes from San Pedro and Peruvian Torch and compounds produced by either involve expression of certain enzymes responsible for the production which is encoded by those genes.

What that should mean is that the metabolism of the hybrid should not include a significant number of new compounds especially since there is plenty of overlap between Trichs such as these and I don't really know of any toxic ones anyway.

Some Trichs do appear to contain compounds that can potentiate a mescaline experience and also contribute to side effects such as vomiting. This should not be dangerous although as with most things you should not go and OD on cactus alkaloids. Don't worry: this is not an easy thing to do at all.
