Just joking. No way I'd expose my plants or home to Benzene. There's enough of it at work

 yea idk if it is all that mutagenic anyway but i do believe it is plenty carcinogenic. even so it would seem inconvenient to use it compared to water soluble mutagens which stay neatly in the plant.

People using crazy shit to mutate their plants that appeals to my imagination. Poor plants though

Added a new cultivar I came across, with very unique serrated petals:

Lophophora jourdaniana hybrid cv. Tenshi (= Feather Petals)
A very interesting & unique cultivar with serrated flower petals.
It was bred by a western grower named Ziki Rios (not sure where he is from but I don't think he's from Asia). He might currently be the only one in possession of this cultivar as far as I know.

I was informed by someone very knowledgeable (without whom I would basically have none of the info in the OP btw, thanks A!) that this is not a cultivar, just a random mutation that happened.

There is no selective breeding  behind this one and this guy is a known scammer and receiver of stolen plants and such.

Damn, so many scammers in the scene :\

Anyway, really excited to hopefully try my hand at some of these cultivars!

Some of those koike look pretty ridiculous by the way... bunch of angora rabbits

Wow! I won an auction for 11.50$ for this plant:

It didn't say what species it is and it looks like the unknown type in the OP. I think it's a fricii cultivar, possibly "Fat Tubercle". Or does fricii just grow that way if you graft it and give it a lot of water. I wonder if the other japanese cultivars were selectively breeded out of that cultivar?

Nice dude, that's definitely the same cv as my "saggy tits" one. Not sure on the species yet, didn't get a flower this season. Maybe diffusa, we'll see.

If it's a fricii it could have been bred out of the other japanese cultivars (I highly doubt it) but definitely not the other way around.

I guess we should see the species at least when it flowers, assuming that it's not an albiflora fricii.

I don't really understand why it has the typical dry underside appearance if it was a graft up until now. But I think I'm gonna cut off the leftovers of the rootstock before I start rooting this, so that it will not rot.

Yeah we should wait for flowers to get a sure ID.
Definitely a good plan to remove the remains of rootstock, if I ever buy plants from them again I'm regrafting them on arrival for sure.

Someone I've been talking with in Germany just got a bunch of cultivars from Thailand, I'll have pics to add soon.

I don't have rootstocks big enough to regraft that loph I am getting but will use the opportunity to try grafting the sizeable pups on it onto Jumbo Peres, to try it out as rootstock.

Interested to see those pics and hear more, so far I haven't heard about many particular Thai cultivars at all if any... even though they are so well known for their nurseries and groweries.

I'm thinking that all 3 of us have them same genetic loph. Same vendor and they look very very closely.

Cool, congrats I guess - pretty wonderful IMO. Somehow though it doesn't seem like it is quite so rare and thus valuable - by comparison the other Japanese cultivars mentioned in the thread afaik appear to be more restricted? But i probably haven't checked around in this field enough to tell - I should hang out in facebook groups more. So far it does seem like the Japanese, Thai and Chinese have pretty different cultures and ways of dealing with these.

I agree that what is mentioned in this thread are cultivars and not (intergeneric) hybrids but I must say I have seen some pics on another forum which still do seem to suggest that they exist. Not really comparable to these cultivars IIRC and indeed looking like species in other genera. But not sure.

I'm so happy more info and interest is coming out about Loph cv's and hybrids!
I've tried over the years to get people interested and talking about it but there just wasn't as much involvement with the Thai and JP communities. Keep doing what you doing and let's get everyone those sexy lophs!

Apart from the unidentified fat tubercled very green lophs plenty of us seem to be getting it will probably be a bit of time before we get to show off our new cultivar ones (which are underway as seeds) plus some variegates. But I would have hoped that the pics in the OP would be enough to trigger some enthousiasm cause juveniles aren't really likely to show off traits like that.

I like the fact that the ultraman mutants are apparently not possible to multiply but I never really liked dumbo much and not sure why.

It's good that these rare ones get some special attention. Maybe it will grow on people so to speak.

The best seedlings can and will show some of the traits of the mature cultivars quite early on.
Here are some examples:

I found an interesting japanese website with some great pictures: http://mudsoil.com

Thanks for the link  Nice site.. I like that it's not internationalized.

And I guess I was wrong indeed, a lot of the seedlings do show plenty traits early.

That japanese site does inspire me to come up with a temporary engrish cultivar name while we are still figuring out the ID!

Received the cactus I posted earlier by the way, in good condition as well. I still don't quite understand how half the underside shriveled if it was grafted, I guess it was degrafted a while ago and the underside got no light and it dehydrated? That explains why there are pups just popping through like they don't care: there are areoles under there.

I guess after I cut off the funky looking rootstock remnant and let it dry for at least 2 weeks or so I will have to decide how deep I wanna plant it. Less deep and I will need a lot of side pups to fill up that space and make a cluster but it would be grand in the long run.

But I can see how that's not really a good idea. Any insight into the depth of planting a degraft and clustering long term?

I guess even grafted if old enough the lower tubercles will cork out. Mine is also corky at the base.
I didn't root the Chinese degrafts very deep at all personally. basically just laid on the substrate almost.

I'd lay them on top of the soil. Let the root establish and then you can pot the plant higher later on, if that seems necessary.
