First time PF tek really fast growth
#25516835 - 10/06/18 10:31 AM (6 years, 3 months ago) |

This is the first time trying the PF tek. 7 days ago, I prepared my jars with a 1 part fine vermiculite, 1 part brown rice flour, and about 1/8 part water substrate. I covered it with a vermiculite layer and put foil on it and pressure cooked for 75 minutes. I inoculated the jars with with Amazon and Hawaiian cubensis spores the next day,and left them on top of my fridge and set my home thermostat to 75 since i don't have an incubator. I then realized that I used too much solution, I used 3cc per jar instead of the recommended 1-1.5. I've heard many places that I usually takes a week to show signs of growth, but I checked 2 days later, and most of the jars showed white fluffy growth on the sides towards the bottom of the jar. It has been growing rapidly ever since. The spots turned to circles that got bigger and looks kind of stringy. It has been 6 days and the jars are almost completely covered except on the bottom. Is this growth normal? Is it something I should worry about or should I just be happy about it? Should I try to get a clone of one of the mushrooms? I don't really have an environment sterile enough to clone comfortably btw.

Don't worry about an incubator and 70 degrees has been fine for me so just make sure you're comfortable in your own home, the myc will be fine. As far as the amount of spore solutions, it's not ideal because you're potentially adding more chances of a contaminant getting in, it's nothing that lose sleep over though. Pics would be more helpful it could be just some good healthy growth but that's hard to say without pics.

I think whats growing is bateria or something. 2 days is way to soon for spores to germinate. I have heard of 3 but usually within two days its contams but who knows. we need pics.

Sounds like mold... but could germinate in 2 days I suppose... 65-75 (room temp shelf) is fine... incubator will likely cause issues... excess solution will likely throw moisture off and make conditions more favorable for contaminants... pics can be extremely helpful, and tell us things you're not looking at

It's mycelium, and definitely over hydrated... will likely be bacterial, but probably get some fruit! Just let it fully colonize the outside, give it a week to consolidate before birthing... stalled cakes can be birthed and fruited, but it's important to remove any exposed uncolonized portion

Yeah, I just noticed the extra condensation in the jars when I took the pic. I will remember to use less solution next time. Hopefully it keeps growing without a problem. I'm not going to handle them much until next week just in case there is bacteria in the jar and I knock it in the substrate. Is there anything to do about the moisture?

You got that kind of growth in 6 days? Jesus christ. Not sure if that is just genetics but if it is you should clone any of these mushrooms.

Hi, what kind of lid do you use? I was thinking of making a special lid with filter disc but I just used two pieces of aluminum foil with lid ring lightly screwed on because that's what the textbook said. I poked holes in the first foil to inoculate.

I hear 6-10 days is normal. I wanted to know if this was a problem. I was thinking it happened because not enough food or something was making them search for food.

yes, I used 2 cups of vermiculite for 1 cup of brown rice flour, and just enough water that there is a few drops in the bowl when I mixed it with vermiculite.

Its probably mold, I just started and tried 2 different strains on brf cakes and so far its taken about 7 days, 8 days at most to see a sign of growth.

What should I do after that? Should I leave as cakes? Should I break them up and add to peat moss, manure, or coco coir? I know it won't be much, but I want the highest yield.

I've had something similar and it still fruited, I figured what I had came from having substrate that was too wet. I got some nasty looking fruits but I'm 99% sure it was from no FAE and over misting not the bacteria.

Once your cakes are done I would break them up into a shoebox with coco coir. If you need a link to some good threads for coir prep or how to make a shoebox I can post some here in this thread. Just let me know.

Thank you guys. So mushrooms don't grow towards light like plants? They are growing straight up even with an opaque, white lid in the pictures. Also, is it okay to use manure instead of coco coir to mix with cakes and just put coco in top? I'm thinking it will provide more nutrients for the mushrooms instead of just brown rice. It is not that much rice flour in each jar, just about 1/4 a cup. maybe less.

Mushrooms grow towards the light. Gods light that forever shines.

Look at the 45C angle of shadow box corner, is perfectly aligned with the angle of mushrooms. That's divine proof of the magnificence of God's light. Amen

Just want to say careful tipping your jars on their sides. You could shift around the dry verm layer and cause some of the verm that was resting on top to touch the colonizing substrate and contaminate it. Youโre probably fine though, very impressive growth, assuming itโs not bacterial. Are these half pint jars?

Just fill the verm to the rim and the lid will hold it in place... you can play hot potato with a properly prepared brf jar and cause no issue

Used as spawn? So long as your bulk mix was field capacity, you're fine... not sure dunking is necessary prior to first flush harvest, even when fruiting as a cake

You shouldn't dunk BRF cakes before spawning them, you'll just end up with slush..
When you break up undunked cakes you get much bigger volume and more inoculation points that way

Thanks guys. I have 2 more question. Do I need a casing layer? I put a mix of peat moss and vermiculite on top, but some of the spawn is poking through because i didn't put that much. How long should it take to colonize the substrate?

You don't need a casing layer. Full colonization occurs very fast within 5 days usually, and pins usually start to pop up 15-20 days after spawning. That's my experience spawning cakes.

Search function will render more results faster than waiting on others to answer for questions like these... casing layers aren't necessary for cubes, and full colonization, depending on your spawn ratio and conditions, I've seen between 5-15 days
