Do you think it works?

Positive Psychology Progress: Empirical Validation of Interventions.
By Seligman, Martin E. P.,Steen, Tracy A.,Park, Nansook,Peterson, Christopher
American Psychologist, Vol 60(5), Jul-Aug 2005, 410-421
Abstract

Positive psychology has flourished in the last 5 years. The authors review recent developments in the field, including books, meetings, courses, and conferences. They also discuss the newly created classification of character strengths and virtues, a positive complement to the various editions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (e. g., American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and present some cross-cultural findings that suggest a surprising ubiquity of strengths and virtues. Finally, the authors focus on psychological interventions that increase individual happiness. In a 6-group, random-assignment, placebo-controlled Internet study, the authors tested 5 purported happiness interventions and 1 plausible control exercise. They found that 3 of the interventions lastingly increased happiness and decreased depressive symptoms. Positive interventions can supplement traditional interventions that relieve suffering and may someday be the practical legacy of positive psychology. The three good things exercise.

In a journal. What were three things today that made you happy. Or three things that went well.

Why did they make you happy.

How can you get more of it?

I think gratitude can enable sometimes experience of life and likely counter the
habitually pessimistic thinking characteristic of depression, but it's hard sufficient itself. You can be grateful and still depressed. But I think the question how can I get more of it could be helpful, perhaps moreso if people looked at the underlying values. Eg if chocolate makes me happy and I eat some nice stuff, more won't necessarily make me happy because I'm actually trying to lose chub. Maybe the underlying values of pleasure, or taking a break to do something nice for myself during the day, is what I want more of.
Probably a useful tool in combination with other things.

I tend to agree. A combination of positive living exercises is best.

It's tiny behavior modification as well. The routine of thinking about positive experience.
