Mini-Slurry Tek * 6
    #25512956 - 10/04/18 08:23 PM (6 years, 3 months ago)

This post is all about making slurry with half pint jars.
Why the fuck do you wanna "go back" to brf you might ask? 4 day quart colonization. sometimes 3 if your eats  :awesomenod:

Puck Prep

To start you want to make a batch of brf jars the normal way 2:1:1 ratio. I use about 3 heaping spoon fulls then tamp it down. You want it to stick to be dense so it doesnt fall apart during the transfer. its never happened to me but i figure it doesnt hurt.
It should look like this.

The height is important. You want to be able to cut clean through the puck with an xacto knife using only the flamed edge. 1/3 to 1/4 the height of the jar. The idea is to colonize like a puck or agar plate rather than a full on cake. For whatever reason im no good at colonizing cakes but im great at colonizing pucks.

inoculate the puck with inner stem tissue LI, LC, Agar LI, agar wedge, or brf wedge. It will take as little as 6 or 7 days when using blended stem tissue or agar LI. Add a few more days for agar wedges or brf to brf transfers.

How to make a Oster blender jar.

Take a regular mouth mason jar ring, oster blender assembly(no gasket) 1/2 pint tall jar, jbweld seelstik made for metal on metal high temperature applications, and some regular 100% silicone not that acrylic or whatever shit. mash the 2 part jbweld putty together until it turns a mixed color. thin it out like your starting a fire with a stick between your palms and place it around the entire inside lip of the jar ring. just enough to create a strong bond. jam the blade in there. place the blade lid combon on top of your 1/2 pint and screw it down. then apply the silicone with your finger in a circular motion so it is applied evenly.

PC
PC the jar combo for 20 minutes at 15 psi. fill the jar with 2 oz of water: 4 table spoons: 1/4 cup of water: 30 ml of water. take your pick.

Now we take our fully colonized puck and prepare the SAB.

Slurry time

Iso your hands and all jars once on the way in and once before inoculation then partially unscrew all jar lids. I like plastic ball lids. They are way easier to unscrew in a sab and i hate struggling and kicking shit up in a sab. thats my preference.

Flame your xacto knife and cut the puck in half then gently dislodge it from the side. poke and lift that bitch up outta there with one hand while opening the lid of the 1/2 pint tall jar with your other hand. i like to tilt the jar to the side while keeping the blades in the jar to use as a surface of resistance when trying to get the puck in the jar. repeat that shit.

Once you have 1 whole puck inside the 1/2 pint tall jar its slurry time mother fucker. :jennajameson:
keep going on high until its like pudding consistency. 10-15 seconds works for me and my blender.

See the pics for ideal consistency. we want wet putty not soup. if you decide to use more water the slurry will have adverse colonization times but you can noc more jars. totaly up to you. experiment.

noc your shit up the way you would a grain to grain and try not to get too much on the lip dripping off.

48 hours in

Q:How long does it take to colonize with an average table spoon amount of slurry?
A: 4 days.

Why not a quart jar or pint jar?
A: you want as little slurry wasted on the sides of the jar as possible. Larger cakes cant be cut with your xacto knife. 1 puck, 1 slurry jar, 1 set of grain jars then repeat that shit for all the rest of your grain jars. you want to continue holding the jar in your dominant hand until you are out of slurry.

Q: How many jars can i noc with one puck and 30 ml of water?
A: 7 jars

Q: why does slurry work so fast?
A: my theory is verm sticks really well to grains and has a extremely fast jump off time.

Inspirational material

Aggh, I was off a day. I think 6 days total. The puck is really small. That LI is growing all
over it.

Slurries are lots of fun, knock your shit and watch it explode right before your eyes, good times.

I should get my lazy ass to build that oyster thingy as I used to do it in the past w/o a blender. Just a blender bottle with its blender ball and all to help me destroy the puck... but there were always some chunks from the puck that wouldn't quit no matter how hard I shook.

Also Glad to see you found some inspiration in Muda's blender and his memory lives on.
Good job man.

Copy and paste it there or have a mod move it for you. This is good stuff that doesn't belong in journal land.

Couple questions my man.  Are you colonizing the pucks with a gas exchange lid?
How long are you pc,ing the puck?
Could you link a specific blender for this?
This is an awesome tek.ive been using blenderless li , but I've been having trouble with excess water.  Hopefully this will help

Zero,
I used 2 piece lids with tyvek covered by mp. Im switching over to ball plastic lids with sfds. Either work. I was lazy this last batch and mixed the two with unmodified lids. With unmodified ball plastic lids unscrew em a little or they warp.

I pc 45 minutes minimum. 60 is ideal.

Oster blender. Its $20 at amazon and walmart. Check thrift stores you can get one for $5.

Why not just dump the puck in your grain jar and shake the shit out of it?

I like slurries and stuff. One thing I never understand with these oster teks, why are you siliconing lids? I haven't had a problem just putting the blender gasket ring down on the glass, then blades, then the jar's ring holding it down. Just being tight is enough for the blender or these blending jars.

Try it. What happens is brf doesnt not break up that easily and if you go over the recommended water content it turns into a sticky rice crispy treat. Exactly like a rice crispy treat hardness and stickness. Eats lays out a way to have a drier cake in his slurry tek that breaks up easier but i was not able to replicate it in practice. Further the mashing of a pf cake is awkward in a sab.your fork and hands get all over the top of the jar and if you have it sideways the cake is susceptible to falling out. If you dump large chunks of brf into grain jars it colonizes poorly in my experience. Big chunks that dont colonize evenly. You want tiny micro particles of verm to coating the grains. Pf2grain is slower thab slurry to grain at the perfect consistency and you gotta use  A LOT more to get the same effect.

Good question. Its much easier dexterity wise to lift the jar ring and tolt that than grabbing the thing blade assembly. You do not want that sucker slipping out of your hand or banging against the side of the exposed 1/2 pint tall jar . Ive had blade/ring combos that leaked before.

Ive had leaks from no silicone/no jbweld and silicone only. I did t talk about my slurry failires bjt rest assured it can happem with ill constructed lids. Its very inportant to habe the blade centered before ratching down the ring. Off kilter and its gonna leak. This  method is not forgiving at all and will fuck you in the ass if it starts leaking. For me its worth it to have the jb weld metal adhesive stuff and then silicone on top. The silicone is just ensuring that the mostly sealed jbweld inside has a second layer of protection. When i tested just the jbweld it didnt leak at all on high blend settings. Better safe than sorry. Jb weld is $5 at home depot and theres enough for a dozen blade ring combos. Silicone is like $5 and good for jar lids and these doo hickeys.

Asura has a nice writeup on using just the blade and ring without adhesive. If you want you can see how he does it in his journal.

Putting this to the test with the tall half pint Saturday. Will post results Sunday. The idea of tall half pints make me nervous but from the looks plenty of room just don't want no glass in the eyes. Also I'm gonna go with non modded plastic lids for my grain jars. Just don't see the point in modding the lids if not needed.
