Coffee & Camping 3

Goes together like PB&J. Making coffee and enjoying it around a campsite is one of the highlights of camping for me.
I've got a trip coming up in a few weeks. I've only ever drank the insta coffee. Those little packets you mix with boiling water. They're pretty decent but they are also pretty expensive. It's time for a change.
For those of you that never miss your morning coffee while camping, what's your brewing method?

I plug in my keurig to the nearest car outlet.

"Turkish coffee" brewing method on a small gas burner. I agree with you, the smell of fresh coffee in the early morning somewhere in the woods is simply wonderful.

Nice. I make that sometimes at my girls place. She likes to play fortune teller afterwards.
I don't particularly care for the taste though. And sometimes it can be granular. Maybe I just need better grounds.

Yeah, you need very finely ground coffee. Most brands are made for filters nowadays. And you end up spitting grains the whole time if you make it the Turkish way. Personally, I prefer the taste this way, but that's probably also dependent on the coffee beans and granulation.

I always use a percolator to make my coffee, at home and in the forest.
I love the flavor the perc makes

How long does it take? Messy? Lots of steps?

It takes maybe 10-15 minutes to make a pot.
Fill with water add filter and coffee to the basket , put on heat.
I use it to make tea also.

I use a percolator as well at camp. When we do a bush weekend I just put coffee in our pot with water, bring to a boil and remove from fire. Let sit for a minute as grounds sunk to the bottom.

I do backcountry pack hunting, so those new starbucks via instant coffees are awesome for me!
So much better than foldgers instant coffee.

I have my little drip cup thing with filters and boiled water. I use this method at home and camping.

I went with insta coffee packs. The brand is called double joy select. Pretty tasty stuff.
My buddy brought a jar of Buen Dia Juan Valdez freeze dried coffee. It wasn’t very good but it was easy to make and cost a fraction the price. That’s likely what I’ll use next time

Wow that's the worst reason to switch I've ever heard. Coffee isn't that hard to figure out, brew something you like.

I used this when i camped a lot.Its 20.00 and makes a real, amount of coffee....Coleman makes something similar but smaller. Ive had the one in the picture for almost 20 years and even used it at home when the electricity was out. I will say this though, line the entire basket with two coffee filters, one on top and one on bottom. If you have a boilover...and it will happen, that will save you from having grounds in your coffee. If you backpack and want something really light and small-- there are plastic french press style rigs that will make one large cup of coffee.

The subject of my thread should probably say backpacking not camping. I'm pretty anal about shaving off grams let alone ounces and lbs.
So bringing something extremely light and compact is crucial. I don't think I would ever bring supplemental equipment for a cup of joe in the backcountry.
I've been testing out various instant coffees lately and I think I found what I've been looking for.

Love this shit. Reminds me of the coffee in Costa Rica. If it's good enough in my apartment then it's definitely going to hit the spot in the backcountry.
