Effect of substrate supplementation on Pleurotus ostreatus?

Is it worth supplementing (thus having to sterilize) a hwfp-based oyster substrate rather than just pasteurizing straight hwfp? I know that supplementation increases BE in shiitake substantially, but has anyone run a substrate comparisons for P. ostreatus?

supplementing with wheat bran or some other agricultural product like cotton seed hulls will increase yield.

Supplementing also drastically increases potential for contamination.
It might not be worth it with oysters. :shrug:

I have been experimenting with pasteurization using hydrated lime with Blue oysters. My first batch I just dumped the lime in with hardwood pellets and 20% wheat bran then added warm water. (5 lb block with 10 and 20% spawn rate) I probably had about 20% contamination rate using sealed filter patch bags. So far about 14-18 oz of mushroom per block regardless of spawn rate.

On my next batch I decided to add lime to warm water then add to dry ingredients. I’m doing 10,15 & 20% alfalfa 5 lb blocks testing 10 & 20% spawn rate and also did a few 6 lb blocks with 20% wheat bran. Every single block is fully colonized with no contamination at day 16. About to throw in Grow Tent. Will report results soon...

Bran will require sterilization.  Alfalfa sup’d sub can be pasteurized.  I’d recommend heat over lime all day.  And unless you want to use a shit tone of spawn, you’ll want to supplement.

I get the best yields with soy hulls 50/50 soy hulls and HWFP. I haven't tried it but I hear shiitake does not grow well on this mix.

So, if going the supplementation/sterilization route. What's the best supplementation rate for bran?

Also, is it worth adding gypsum? Does gypsum increase BE in oyster substrate?

Thanks, Drake. It seems like for commercial production soy hulls are pretty hard to beat.

For small-scale hobby production, however, I some have reservations. Sourcing and storage are the big ones. I live in an apartment with very limited space, the fact that I can buy organic bran for $1/pound at the health food store up the block makes it quite appealing for my needs/limitations. But, assuming I can special order a 50 lb bag from my local feed store:
1) What is the shelf life at room temperature?
2) Do they attract pests?

I also have a general concern re: soy hulls, which is pesticides. Soy is sprayed with roundup, and I imagine that the hull contains more residual than the bean. I wonder how much, if any, accumulates in the mushrooms. Is this something that has been discussed or tested for?

it's sold as livestock food. Try finding a bag of cotton seed hulls if you can't find soybean. I got really nice results from it.

Fungi break down and eat organic compounds, such as pesticides.  Thus, mushrooms will not contain pesticide unless it is sprayed directly on them.  Heavy metals are the concern with mushrooms.

Fair enough.

For soy hulls/HWFP

I use a cup for 6 lb bags but I was low on spawn the last time and only used about 4 oz's and looks like they will be done in two weeks with 8 oz it takes about 10 days. I have commercial grade spawn from aloha medicinals though.

I use a spoodle they do not have a seem like others. So they are easier to clean and have no place for cantams to hide...

I just put them in a separate spawn bag and sterilize them with my sub.

Here is what I used when using bran...



You can leave out the poo but water needed will change. Be careful with the water anyway and test for field capacity until you get it right then wright it down so you can reproduce it.

All the ingredients are weighed in LBS by the way. Except the water.

I'm glad to have a bran recipe--I'm still looking for soy hulls. The best I've found is a 1,000 lb minimum order, which is about 950 lbs more than my storage capacity.

LOL I get mine form southern states if there is one near you they give me 50 lb bags. If you can't find soy hulls just use the bran but you will be more satisfied with soy if you can find it. Like I said be careful with the water I am not sure if this was my final recipe. Everything else should give you a good final product.

Tits on a bull, I recently added gypsum to a few test bathes (note, everything I’m doing is testing. Haha). Not sure if I will notice an appreciable difference based on other’s past experience.
