Lions Mane on Agar, contam? (Hericium Coralloides)
    #25507031 -

Hey guys,

Nocc'd up some plates with a culture of Hericium Coralloides. Lions Mane mycelium is inherently light and wispy and I'm having trouble determining if this plate is contaminated or if this is normal growth. Never seen Lions Mane on agar before, but I have another 3 that look exactly the same.

It is easier for someone to identify or see an contamination when you put a light under the petri dish shining up into it in the picture.

I did try that and it made the outer edges difficult to see. I'm mostly concerned about the outer "fluffy" edges, not sure if that's mould or mycelium

Well I can't see it too well, but was it rapidly spreading after it first arose? You said you've got others that look exactly the same, are the fluffy outer edges on them as well?
If so it probably is a mold, I personally don't think that is the mycelium but I do not have experience with lions mane culture.
I looked at some other examples on agar through google and they didn't seem to have any visible cotton like mycelium extending from the white masses.
When did it occur like that? I notice the plate is from 9/9. Is that tape you used to keep the petri dish together or is that parafilm?

Molds are much faster growing. It looks typical to me. Slow to colonize and pinning like crazy.

It's hard to see but I agree with the above in the sense that it can look weird or suspicious, first weak and wispy (not sure what the term is for this initial exploratory colonization myc) and then consolidates and fruits readily.

I don't think it's terribly slow to colonize but rather just looks weak, wispy and may have myc travelling inconspicuously through the agar rather than on top.

In a week it will be 30 days and still not covering the plate. That is slow.

Only time I've had my grow through agar is when I poured new agar over top of it.

It wont really cover the plate not even when fruiting off the plate, its very whispy look at the surface with a light to replect off the surface to see it.
