RAM Memory

My PC wont even run right now. I did a memory test and seems like my RAM has gone bad.
Is this common? Whats the best RAM brand? Whats the most stable? Does RAM have a short life span?

RAM does go bad (shorts out, pins burn out, chips burn out, etc...)
pretty much any brand will do, if you're not a hardcore gamer or doing photo/video/audio editing or scientific research. no need to spend big bucks for the fancy stuff.
how new/old is the computer? how dirty/clean do you keep the area around it? do you smoke around it? all those things can contribute to the lifespan of computer components.

Nerver thot i could answer one of your questions Mr Logical Legend Sir.
Sounds like you got a avg slightly less than avg on the lifespan of the ram. Dust will almost never effect ram or smoke. 8 gigs is plently for even the most intense games even if they call for more, 16 if you want a smooth and quick photoshop experience. 32/62/over if you are multi graphical working for Disney or pixar or something crazy like that. dosnt matter if its 2400, 3200, 4200 ect, unless you have an XMP profile for overclocking all ram runs stock at 2100 or a number close to that one. Take you ram out one at a time, if it boots then you know its ram. All rams in the world are made by only 4 or so company's at it core.

Interesting. Thanks for answering.
Currently i was running one stick of RAM cause i had stabiliity problems before and found it to be one of the RAM sticks i had. Im guessing since i used one stick, it made its lifespan shorter?
I found a pair of Kingstons that look promising. Going to order some when i have the money.

sorry but smoke = dust; and dust can cause overheating of components.

I found pairs to perform better than singles. And ya dust and smoke can affect certain componates but you really have to let your pc go to shit before you notice it, and that only effects fans and heat fin dissapators, to effect the ram performance you wound need gobs of layers of junk and goo beyong anything sane that would hinder the little bit of heat they make overclocked or not. Just air blow your case once in a while.

So i just got my new RAM. I put it inside my computer and it still crashed! Fuck.
Then i did a pre-OS memory diagnosic test on the new RAM and the program froze. Double fuck.
Lastly, i running idol right now with it in "Last Know Configuration" and it seems to be running alright now doing nothing. Afraid to use it that would cause it to crash.
I noticed yesturday that it crashed right when my A/C turned on.
So i have three theories:
Power issues causing RAM issues. Motherboard issues causing RAM issues. OS software issues causing RAM issues.
The troubleshooting continues

Could possibly be ram slots on the motherboard but I doubt all your ram slots are bad if there is more than one. It could also be damaged from a brown out if it crashes when your A/C comes on and your line voltage is dropping too low. Is your computer a desktop unit? If it is check for bulged capacitors on the motherboard. If it's a laptop, I've seen laptop displays cause the computer to seem like it is froze but it is actually the display no longer displaying properly.

What type of RAM test did you perform?
Also some things I didn't mention in my previous post. When troubleshooting it is always best to troubleshoot a minimal system. If you have any external peripherals connected disconnect them. Sometimes other hardware components can pull a system down such as a bad hard drive. If you can't isolate the problem sometimes unnecessary internal components such as the hard drive will also need to be disconnected to further troubleshoot & eliminate devices not saying that is the case here but just to give you an idea to rule out as many devices as you can to narrow your troubleshooting down.

I may have found the issue.
I was about to give up, and i was unplugging all my cables to get it ready for a new motherboard when i found a loose SATA connected to my OS HDD drive. Maybe it was shorting it.
The cable is really short too short. Like 6inch. I plugged a red longer SATA cable and i think its better.

If it is a cable at least it is an inexpensive fix. I've seen on Mac laptops if the sata cable is bad it can make the computer run extremely slow or not boot at all

Huh interesting.
Yeah i hope its just the cable. Checked around town, no one has it. Going to check a local computer shop tomorrow for one. If not, internet.

Nice.
So Ive been running the computer, and I believe I had two problems that may have been caused by one problem.
I bought a surge protector today as I did not use one before for my computer. That was a mistake.
During my previous test, my computer found bad memory, so I replaced it.
My current theory is my computer suffered from two effects at the same time. A power surge/dirty power caused my RAM memory to go bad. Then I replaced the memory, and it still was crashing, indicating the RAM wasnt the main source.
Since my PC hasnt crashed with this surge protector yet, even after running an hour "idling" test to see if it would blue screen, I can safely say that the dirty power/power source was the issue.

Update:
Finally found the issue. It was the motherboard itself. I ordered a used Intel Quad duo motherboard (dunno the full name of it) and i installed it.
At first, I thought it was broken as it would crash all the time while trying to start up the computer. First power issues, as it turned on and off randomly it seemed. Did some breadboarding and it seems like my switches on my chassis arent compatible with the motherboard. Might be my power switch itself.
Currently my Reset button is my Power Button.
Then my second problem was it would crash right as Vista was booting up. Right in the middle. I used my cell phone to record the very quick blue screen, looked up the code and found out that I had to re-install Vista because I swapped out my motherboard. I had no idea I had to that. Learned a lot from this experience: troubleshooting is complex with desktops. So many variables and components.
Im running my Intel motherboard now with no issues, no crashes. It finally feels stable. Im still a little stress it might crash (PTSD), but so far so good.
