I confess, I prefer the yellow/orange sticky stuff... Much more intense IME... also, with MHRB, do another pull after naphtha pulls, but use xylene or touline to get the red "jungle spice "... it's the devil, even weighed out that way first razor scrape lol

Cloning a TYC won from a contest in this thread:

Small ones, but I really really like their dwarfy appearance. Even when dried, they're cute as pie!

Haven't chomped on em yet though...

I've been thinking the same about that dark stuff.I have some of that put away for when I really want to go out there.

I get that sometimes when I put my bark in a little hot.
Never thought of using xylene to pull, just to clean it up.

 I was the last in a line of posts... just contributing to the subject at hand... technically, it's a thread about confessions by amateur mycologists (really of one particular amateur mycologist), and says nothing about those confessions being mycological in nature :laugh2:

I would have thought there’s a reason behind its orientation. I’ll find out soon I guess...

As long as it retains laminar flow and you are comfortable working in front of the space it provides.

I've seriously wondered and considered those things as well in my build, and ended up concluding that I would put in mine the way most are put in, which is with the pleating horizontal, but that it shouldn't really matter a whole lot as far as I can predict. I'm no expert though, so don't take my word for it, but I mean to say that I don't think you will encounter any issues having it mounted this way. You could do 2 checks right now to see if there are gonna be issues, and neither is a guarantee for the long term functioning I think, but it's good to check anyway after a FH build. One is the lighter check for speed, but once it's at the right speed, do it across the entire face of the hood and further out from the hood, like at 10 inches from it's face, to see if it  retains laminar flow across the whole filter and in the 3D space you will be using as working space. The second test should happen after the first, and that's just to open a petri dish in front of it, face of the dish towards the filter, preferably with sterile gloves (and proper donning of those) for extra certainty, and then move the plate across the entire face (don't swing it around, just go at a steady speed and follow a grid like pattern so you don't miss spots). Then keep the plate at room temperature for a few weeks. You can work in front of it in the meantime, but if your work fucks up, you'll be able to check if your hood is the culprit. Watch out not to go too far out around the sides of course, since you don't have any flanges there can be surrounding air sucked into the stream of the laminar flow around the sides, but because of that laminar flow, it won't interfere very far inside the stream, but let's say the outer inch of your working area can be considered space to be careful around, with that inch being a lot less at or closer to the filters face.

TL;DR: check your hood with a lighter across the entire face and do the same with a petri plate making sure you don't enter contams yourself so you know what's up.

I like the way you think.

Earlier today I ended up testing the entire box and filter with a lighter. It seems pretty decent. BUT I think I might caulk in the face around the edges just to make sure there no air moving around the filter and the trim in the front.

Thats a great idea with the petri. I would thing the results should be faster than a few weeks. Probably more like 5-7 days. I would see contamination.

Another confession. I went to walmart and bought a mini fridge. When the lady rang it up she asked me if it was supposed to be $53.00. I acted like a normal walmart customer and didn't answer and just played stupid. It was supposed to be $100 :awedance:

Check the airflow patterns with an incense stick. The smoke will give a much better picture of how the air moves vs. a lighter.
The lighter test is more a way of estimating air speed.

Making test plates is a great idea. Instead of one plate that you move across the face of the filter, I use 4 or 5 dishes.
I open each one in front of a different quadrant of the filter for 30 seconds to a minute, and then label them upper left/center/lower right...

Well congrats on the fridge deal then :awesome:

Couple weeks is because some contams can take a while to grow, certainly on media that  might not be THEIR ideal nutrient source, but indeed, about 5 days is enough for most contams.

Didn't you close it up with caulking around the filter when building it? I personally use Tec7 a lot, I don't know if you guys have that, but it's a type of construction glue that comes in silicone tubes and remains flexible as well, a lot like silicone, but it glue a whole lot better than regular silicone and a few types of that brand can withstand pressure cooker temps. Xealpro being the type that works best, for our European members. But yeah, that worked absolutely great.

The thing with caulking up afterwards is that it usually looks like shit. If I were you, I'd check if it needs extra caulking by unscrewing it and making sure it's all behind the woodwork.

That would be my second go to if the first turned out to be not perfect.

I just don't like wasting plates. Now that I have PP petri dishes that doesn't matter anymore though
