Existing before Heaven and Earth,
Silent, still, standing alone, unchanging,
All-pervading, unfailing,
I do not know its name; I call it tao.
If forced to give it a name, I call it
Great (ta). Being great, it flows out;
Flowing out means far-reaching;
Being far-reaching, it is said to return.

The flat earth post was not bad

Wanna hear something funny? I just made $80k since my last post above.

I'm in the gym now listening to the Arctic Monkeys and in even better mood than I was before.

Do I really need those life lessons? Everything looks pretty good from where I'm standing

I'll change when and if I have to.

I'm just drooling thinking about all the heroin I could buy for $80,000!

What is your occupation?
How much have you made this week, are you a drug dealer?

You need to listen to some Warren Zevon instead of that Arctic Monkeys nonsense

There's no way I'd buy heroin...

Wana hear something funny? The more you have the more you lose. One day everything that has ever been given to you by the universe will all be taken back.

I wonder if you're ready for that.

To have nothing is to have EVERYTHING.

I wonder if you understand those words.

That is just what I told my wife on saturday when I was tripping and feeling down. We can lose everything any time. I take big risks and I am very well aware of it.

And what do I want anyway? What moves me? Money? Pleasure? Fun? Why the hell do I do everything I do? I had a mini-existential crisis

The one thing that anchors me is my kids. That's what keeps me in my current path. They are the thing I love the most.

I dont worry about myself. You could take all I have, leave me naked in the jungle in Peru and I'll be fine. I'm resourceful. I have lived in many countries. I have skills. When I was young I didnt have any money and I didnt seek it. And I was so happy in my 20's. Broke but happy. Money was never a goal in my life. I wanted to be an intellectual. And a provocator. And have fun. My girlfriend and me lived for a year on $600 a month. For both of us. I didnt even feel poor.

That changed when I decided to have a bunch of kids. Then I decided I also wanted a bunch of money.

If I ever lose it I'll only be sorry for them.

I really dont have an expensive taste. I developed it a little though  but I can get rid of it

My wife has a more expensive taste than me she'd miss it more  and she grew up VERY poor.

Can the sciences explain the love you have for your children.

"And what do I want anyway? What moves me? Money? Pleasure? Fun? Why the hell do I do everything I do? I had a mini-existential crisis"
Maybe some spiritual bullshit thinking may bring you some peace....not false peace....real peace.

Let me put it this other way. The world we live in can't just be any way. We find that the vast majority of possible ways the world can be it would just not make sense mathematically. With the things we observe the possible laws of physics you can have are extremely constrained by self-consistency. And when we look at the world we find they things are exactly the only way they can be for the mathematical description of it to make sense. That's why people knew all the particles that exist decades ago, well before they were discovered. They were all found exactly as and where predicted.

WHERE THE HELL DO YOUR SPIRITS FIT HERE?

Find a a freaking place where they could fit in these theories and maybe I'll consider it

The world does not make sense mathematically....hence the sciences continue for a unified truth.

Understanding that some of the headiest most profound discoveries have come of the the back of what you may call " spiritualistic" type mindsets and discussions may allow you to stop trying so hard to reconcile your rational mind and the irrational experiences you may have had.

dont throw your baby out.

Of course it can. Every complex organism needs to take care of its offspring. It is evolutionarily favorable.

My life philosophy is very simple. We are just some bugs that grew in the surface of a rock spinning around a star and fell on some riches. But ultimately nothing that we can do has any meaning or value on an absolute sense. Only the value we want to assign to it. So just go with what feels right and trust that your instincts are well calibrated

For the same reason I dont subscribe to any philosophy that gives any absolute value to anything. And I'm always open to change my views and behavior in any way when I see a reason to do so or I feel like it.

How is there not meaning when your life is dependent upon what those before us have done?

Which means our actions will create the future experience of those who come after us.

Doesnt that make things meaningful?

"For the same reason I dont subscribe to any philosophy that gives any absolute value to anything. And I'm always open to change my views and behavior in any way when I see a reason to do so or I feel like it."

Seems like you are just as conflicted as the rest.

"And what do I want anyway? What moves me? Money? Pleasure? Fun? Why the hell do I do everything I do? I had a mini-existential crisis "

For what it's worth I'm with you and would've been arguing your case a decade ago.

Now....well...I've just allowed myself a little more wriggle room.
The sky wont fall in if you admit you couldn't figure it out with pragmatism time and science.
