Green/yellow spots where inoculated (color blind but still not right)

All 10 of these pf jars have this these yellow/greenish spots (i'm color blind so I could be wrong about the exact color) where they were inoculated. You can only seem a small amount of mycelium on one, and I'm wondering if this is a contam. The only thing I could have done wrong is I slid the tip of the needle down the side of the glass on most of them instead of poking it in until it hit the glass. I'm guessing this might have made a large hole in the dry verm layer or something.

It's been 6 days since inoculation. Also, the spores are pretty old, they've been sitting in a closet for about 6 months. I'm wondering if it's just that the spores are dead and the difference in color is from dryer substrate vs wet substrate.

Bacterial contamination. I'm willing to bet that those will fail. You should take a step back and start over with agar. Then I reccomend moving on to grain spawn since you will be well prepared once you have clean cultures on plates. Come over to the oat side...

What recipe are you using? Looks like there is no vermeculite in the cake... are we looking at the spot near the bottom? I'm a bit lost lol... and that might be a shadow... I think maybe I see what you're looking at, are we sure it's not just wet? Just give it some time... Agar is a  great idea, and as streamline as bulk has become, it's much easier and requires less maintenance than cakes... these tall jars kind of suck for cakes anyhow, wide mouth 1/2 pints are quicker to colonize and easier to birth...

If I was in that situation, I would get one of the jars that look like that and sacrifice it for a good whiff to see if it smells sweet or fruity or like something basically that doesn’t smell like either brown rice flour or fresh mushrooms.

If you smell nothing, well then hey, you figured it out at the cost of one jar.

I can’t ever remember being able to smell it through the verm barrier and tiny holes, but it’s very well possible. Blame it on my younger days spent with cocaine.

I'm going to say that is almost certainly not due to cocaine use. Unless your nose collapsed from picking out your septum you should be physically fine as long as you arent clogged. Getting a broken nose would be more likely to cause damage like that.

Damn, I have been planning on going to agar, but I wanted to get this one batch done first. Is the general recommendation to go agar>oats>g2g>coir in monotub? Or should I skip the g2g for now?

2:1:1 recipe but just went to FC with water instead of 1 cup. And I'm talking about the discolored part near the top of the dry verm layer, the bottom part is a shadow for sure. Yeah agar seems like the way to go for sure.

Ah, I've just got a little personal vendetta against the misinformation about Cocaine and it's relationship with the nose. Rhinoliths and septal perforations are no fun.

Full wave, I would recommend doing the g2g, but maybe only a couple jars and spawn the rest to coir in shoeboxes, each separately. This will get you flushing asap and get you closer to the next set sooner. The first shoeboxes will also give you the opportunity to take some tissue samples for clones. The g2g recipients will be spawned while your clones colonize.  This way if all goes well you will have continuous fruiting assuming all goes well.

That sounds like a great plan, how many jars would be the equivalent of something like the pf tek. Like I know with pf tek 10 jars is a good number, what about for shoeboxes?

So update: The discolored spots are still there on all of my jars at every point where I inoculated, but they haven't gotten any bigger. It took about a week to see mycelium growth but now it's growing strong around the spots. I'm thinking the substrate is just really wet there from the MS and that the mycelium was struggling to grow in that part, but I have no idea.

What do you all think? I can post pics later but just imagine the pic I posted above just with healthy mycelium growth around those discolored spots.
