Gymnopilus Luteus?
    #25496302 -

I found a few scattered smaller gymnopilus looking mushrooms on old woodchips covered with some vegetation. I could not get pictures until later unfortunately so all I have are these semi fresh fragments. I'm thinking maybe Luteus?
Cap: 1 to 1 inch and a half, buff yellow, semi cratered surface, white ish flesh.

Gills: spaced, beginning sort of buff but becoming rusty orange over time.

Spore print: yellow orange to rusty brown

Stripe:1 to  2 inches long, slender, buff yellow, white ish flesh. No ring

Taste: mild, maybe faintly bitter.

Bruising:faint greenish spots on cap, and some green at base of stems, dark brown on cap and dark brown/purple ish on stem. It's around 80 degrees and cloudy here in central NC, I'm hoping these are active gyms. Thanks!

I'll also note that they were growing in the same area were I recently found leutofolius clade gymns.

Looks promising. Wait for TI confirmation before scarfing down, but you know that.

Good find and good luck!

Thanks! I stuck them in the fridge for now to preserve and provoke some bruising. They're a lot more yellow than the other gymns I found last week, but about the same size

I guess as long as they're definitely gymns and definitely not poisonous I'll give them a try

Taste a small piece and see if it is bitter or mild tasting.

If I give it a good taste it's a bit bitter on the tongue but not crazy

If anything, I'm think I'm pretty confident that it's probably luteus

G. luteus usually have a sweet anise type of scent and are pretty bitter to taste. I think you've got it right.
