How is police presence at smaller music festivals?
    #25492952 -

I normally only go to festivals that are anywhere from 200-2000 people, generally under 1000.

In my experience there often is NO police presence, sometimes there's 2-3 uniformed officers within the event (or more typically at the gate) to "keep the peace" if you will. They mostly seem to not care about busting anyone and are just there to make sure things do not get out of hand.

What I'm wondering about is the unknown though, eg undercovers. Does anyone have any insight on their presence? Normally by the second or third night it seems like even if there were undercovers that the place has reached critical mass, they can't arrest everyone, there is so much rampant chaos that I feel as though they would just give up almost; or you'd have busts left and right and word would spread fast which I have never experienced.

On occasion you do hear a rumour of undercovers, but I always dismiss it as people wigging out on drugs. Eg. "This cop walked out of the woods in uniform and then put on street clothes." I'll ask a logical question that I see as a big gaping hole, "why would an undercover be in uniform, why would they 'walk out of the woods?'" and the person just looks confused and cannot answer the question; it's like you see the gears turning as they try to reconstruct reality. At that point I'll dismiss it and move on. You never encounter people who were actually arrested or saw an arrest (short of the cops being called on someone for being agressive or something).

So I'm asking. What is your experience? The only insight one can get on this are first hand direct experiences, either if you've been busted, saw someone get busted, or happen to directly be involved with LEO. Again, I KNOW they are at bigger festivals, I'm wondering about the more intimate and smaller more underground fests.

In many ways I kind of get the impression that the cops almost don't want to find trouble, these events cause no harm and bring revenue for their small town (with limited resources), the people seem to be safe and have a good time, so why would they want to shut them down or bring undue attention to it? On the flip side it's also like when you have a park ranger run into a group of 20 people weighing out mushrooms. He knows what's going on, but he's in over his head, that group is at 'critical mass,' he can't arrest them all, there's not that much backup to handle it, there is no direct threat, so in all likelihood he's going to do the best he can to pretend he literally didn't witness what his eyes just think they saw. However, am I just deluding myself with wishful thinking here?

I went to a small festival recently, i didnt see one cop or one person who might be a cop. It was nutz!

I did go to a festival called Boombox in the Boondocks where there were two guys who dressed kinda like military walking around. I believe they were undercover with the worst type of outfit

I doubt they are at the smaller ones but who knows

Yeah, that's been my experience too. After it gets going people will just offer you drugs at the stage, do lines, come around with literal menus, whatever. At that point it's like... well, how can the cops arrest anyone?

It's not "justice" if you arrest one guy in front of 4 more doing lines of blow and ketamine to march him out through crowds of people popping pills and eating tabs because that's all your 3 man team of officers is capable of handling, at that point you just throw in the towel on drug busts and focus on keeping the peace (or so I figure ).

I'm not worried for personal use at all. Honestly why I'm asking is that I'm going to a burn and I'd love to share some psychedelics with as many there that I can (as in give them away for free to help foster the event), but I'm worried about taking the risk.

Most undercover/plain cloth police presence is a part of a contractual obligation with the city that holds the festival. If the event is held on private grounds then police need a reason to enter or be invited in. Small first year festivals can fly under the radar but even if the police are unwelcome they can still send in CIs to make purchases and that can create a bunch of problems for promoters and the owners of the property because of the rave act or crack house laws.

Everyone who's interested in this should look into how Schwagstock got taken down.

As far as festivals/gatherings go, I pretty much only attend the small things. Usually around 1000 heads, a few with around 2000 to 4000 or so at the most. But most of the things I go to have around 1200 heads or so.

A few of the festivals I've gone to are on private property so law enforcement isn't allowed  on the property with out a reason/warrant....Most festivals I go to are up in the mountains/out in the woods somewhere so they're not really happening near a city or town that would have police on patrol.

There is one spot near me that I won't name...but there's a handful of small festivals there through out the summer...It's technically public land, I've seen a random sheriff roll through there just a couple times out of the 8 years that I've been going there, and another time I saw a CHP there briefly (apparently because someone got their foot ran over ?)..

....And one other time I saw some federal forest rangers roll through the area (part of the area is federal forest land), they kinda caught these people smoking weed (illegal on federal land) and doing whippits near their tent...I observed from my camp, couldn't hear the conversation but long story short the rangers didn't really hassle them (probably just gave them a long "chat", they even gave hugs before they continued on their way lol.

But yea...generally speaking I pretty much never see LEO at the things I go to. This is one of the many big reasons I only attend small festivals for the most part, things that are under the radar, sometimes on private property, and/or out in the cuts in middle of no where....No worries at all.

Depends on the festival. I don't know about now but I know Spirit of Suwanee for example used to be crawling with undercovers.

Small festivals around here they have booths selling shroom chocolates and open drug deals everywhere.
If you've got drugs out and theres a cop in your presence I cant imagine they'd let you go no matter how many of you there are.
I was at gathering where a cop appeared, my friend approached him trying to plead his case that they didnt need to be there or whatever, the cop frisked him and found the container full of MDMA. They didnt even cart him away which I thought was rather generous. I think it was because he had kids and was begging for mercy.

Depends in the fest. One of my favorite festivals was in Alaska. Private property about 3-500 people would show up for the weekend. Large circle with a stage in the middle. Was owned by a guy named Boot. I've seen him wandering around naked on more than one occasion. Police would come to the gate but weren't allowed inside unless of an emergency. People openly had signs up if they were hawking goods.

Theres telltale signs of undercovers. Fresh tie dyes, running shoes and sporty sunglasses w buzzcut. Cops arent gonna chase you in flip flops.

I'd assume it depends the region, but in the NE there is very little police presence at smaller festivals (less than 1000 attendees).  For larger festivals it varies from festival to festival.  At a smaller festival they wouldn't be able to get more than one or two busts cause most people know each other and everyone talks.  There really aren't that many people hustling out in the open either.
