The psychological significance of the bible and psychedelics? An atheist finding "God"
    #25491181 -

It’s so much better to be able to find a meaning to life. My use of DMT absolutely opened my eyes to something intelligent and humbling. There are intelligent entities somewhere out there, or better yet in the mind. They have surpassed what we need a life to surpass. There was nothing wrong when you were there. You felt welcome and comfortable. We must stand the trial of life before we pass on to whatever is next. There’s no reason that a physical being could contact an entity through a drug and your mind. It had to mean something. All the way up to this point I was the stereotypical Westerner that didn’t believe in God. I just found it was a bullshit organization made to suppress the masses and keep them in order. I realized after taking DMT, listening to these Jordan Peterson biblical lectures, meditating, using mushrooms, applying the things I was learning from these videos and these experiences and to this day, ever since I have accepted DMT, marijuana, psilocybin mushrooms, and the bible into my life, as amazing things, that have meaning and value. It made things complete. And after being involved with DMT, and mushrooms for a couple months I came across his lecture on The Phenomenology of the Divine where Jordan Peterson talks about psychedelics and the profound benefits spiritually and medically they’ve had on people. This was something that got me excited because if the bible and psychedelics could exist in harmony, that would just make so many more incredible things possible.
For example, the first thing that was exciting was that the bible had some relevance and meaning to people. Why is that such a big deal? The mindset that you put into the universe is so much different. The idea humans came together to create this idea of God. An idea that has touched billions of lives, was real and intelligent. We don’t give enough credit to how smart people were in the past. So you have hope for humanity. The life you lead if you don’t have hope for humanity is a much worse path to follow. I had some dark days in the grey area where I had “morals” as denying the bible and denying drugs (marijuana, psilocybin, and DMT). I came across weed long before the bible. I was disappointed in the view point of the State I was in. Too conservative and close minded. So, when I came across mushrooms and DMT and started feeling like there was a meaning to it, I was always caught second guessing myself because of the culture I was brought up in. Drugs were bad and only losers did them. Boy did I have a culture shock when I went into college haha.
So, I just want to put this out there for anyone with my mindset. The atheist mindset. I know exactly how you feel. The ideas you argue over aren’t necessarily incorrect, but they’re the wrong kind of ideas to be arguing for. You can live a long prosperous life not being in a religion or believing in God. But then it turns into you laughing at people not knowing that both of you are wrong, and both of you have let the other side blind you to something way more harmonizing.
This gives you an open mind to accept religious people as they are, and understand the way they think, and to genuinely love and respect what they believe. I’m also coming from the viewpoint of having been a very vocal disapproving person of religion and God ever since coming across religion when I was younger. So to accept the bible and to find God is to discover the future, to discover this unknown connection between the cosmos and humans (or at least know that’s what you’re trying to do). It’s to be able to look at human beings and realize what we’ve done. We’ve come from the Earth and figured out how to survive. We’ve transcended the need to always be in survival mode, which brought us into the intellect of art, music, theater, the bible, religion, and the creation of the idea of god. How can you not look at humans as godly figures connected to the cosmos after realizing that? We just barely became conscious as a society about global warming and plastic pollution and carbon dioxide output. Every day there are strides towards fixing it. Some are small, some are big. We are starting to steer in the direction of coexisting with the earth once again, but on a much grander scale.
So that respect can come from accepting the bible, but to disprove of mushrooms and dmt, and (from only research) LSD? That’s denying literal examinations of our spirits. On mushrooms you feel as though your body and your soul are two different people having a conversation with yourself. You get to address the mind and soul. You get to really contemplate how thinking works. There are realizations that you haven’t ever come up with before. You ask different questions and think differently. You think more profoundly. Terrence Mckenna had a great description of this “it’s just a quality of thinking that I recognize to be clearer and deeper than my own”. These are just a few of the spiritual benefits, then you must add the medical benefits, and the personal benefit (involving micro dosing). Psychedelics aren’t for everyone, but they can truly be beneficial to a mass amount of people. The bible is a transcendent experience itself when you read it. Psychedelics can make you experience something profound and transcendent as well. If it’s not for you (which is totally fine and great) I would hope you’re not wanting to deny someone of that if they were wanting to experience it. I would hope that knowing what it can do would open your mind to a lot of things that you might have overlooked in life because of the blinding characteristics each of these sides have.
Any life anyone leads, wouldn’t you recommend having the best outlook as possible? I’m not saying do drugs but understanding the fact that the bible can have some psychological correlation with psychedelic drugs will make you respect those drugs for what they are instead of what they are known for. It’s so interesting to think about. The best way to learn something is to talk about it so I want to see what people think of these thoughts. I’m down to discuss everything. I just wanna hear all the good and bad things you have to say about this!

Nice share & can relate.  I find the bible helps us cultivate ourselves while in search for answers to the deep questions in life..  with deepened faith, hope and love will result in lessened fear. Mushrooms are just great temporary amplifier on what weve cultivated.

Basically it is too hard to read this wall of text testament to the accumulated testaments of the dark ages, but I am glad you are less perplexed than before you picked up the good book.

Can you use paragraphs and somehow explain the psychological significance?

Well in one of his lectures, Jordan Peterson compares the time when humans became humans in an evolution to the story of Adam and Eve. There's so much that goes into it and I feel like I don't do it justice but I'll give it a try! It's good practice.

In the story of Adam and Eve Jordan Peterson brings up a couple interesting questions. Why is God lying to Adam and Eve about the fruit? "For if you eat of the fruit you shall surely die". The serpent tells us the truth of the fruit, that we would become like Gods if we were to eat of the fruit understanding the knowledge of good and evil. So this represents our co-evolution with snakes millions of years ago while we were still living in the trees as primate type people.
The snake in the story "woke us up". In reality the snake woke us up as well. Have you ever seen a python or anaconda attack something? They are absolutely silent, unforgiving, and ruthless. And when they strike they can have 15 feet of muscular tube around your throat or chest in a matter of seconds. So that's a danger to to adult's but what about the kids? You leave a child unattended at those times for 5 minutes and that's all it takes. Your child might not have been eaten by them but they're certainly dead.
So humans had some problems to figure out. One was being able to see the snakes. You see the snakes you can get away from them easier. To be able to see a snakes camouflage so well you need a big brain. So we became smarter and smarter and one day realized that we should be worried about the potential snakes.
Zebras don't worry about potential lions. If a lion is 200 feet away from them drinking out of a lake, they aren't scared of that lion. They are only scared of the present running and attacking lion. So for us to realize the potential snakes of tomorrow we woke up and discovered the future. Our eyes were becoming "opened". By discovering the future, you discover time, you discover your ability to manipulate matter past your primal instincts, and you discover your own mortality. That's when you start asking "Why are we here" "Who are we" "What is the meaning of any of this". Other animals can't comprehend the future, and that's what opened our eyes. That also creates the discovery of work. A bee doesn't think he's working despite doing the same job every single day until he dies. We know we will have to work, and God even said it. "By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, four out of it you were taken, for you are dust". So to me, there's this idea that maybe waking up is what catapulted us into hell. Into knowing we are going to work the rest of our lives and knowing we are going to die. To be able to wake up and realize all the suffering that is inevitable. That's hell. Knowing the knowledge of good and evil.
No other animals understand evil. We created evil. We understood the things we could accomplish by using evil. Even when an animal attacks you, it's not for evil purposes. When we are tying people down and freezing their arms solid and pouring hot water on them until the skin slips off is evil. (Unit 731 World War II)
So the snake opens our eyes which is absolutely amazing that someone could come up with this. But it also says in the story that before our eyes were opened "they were naked and not ashamed". Primates aren't ashamed that they are naked. I just watched a video of a chimpanzee recognizing herself in a mirror. The first thing she did was clean her nose and pick things out of her teeth. People that this was an amazing moment (which it was) but I realized that she was on the brink of hell. She had already been able to identify insufficiency within herself and she wanted to take care of them. We look in the mirror and see those kind of insufficiencies multiplied by a million. The smarter as a species you become the more you realize what's wrong with you. Humans have the biggest burden to bear in this. No animal has to deal with the complex psychological problems that humans face.
When we ate of the fruit we realized we "were naked and ashamed". Adam and Eve put fig leaves over themselves because of how ashamed they were. They were aware of their insufficiencies and had to cover up. One day humans looked down and realized how vulnerable we were. Standing up straight for every single detail to be put on display for anyone to look at and analyze. How would anything ever get done if we were always worried how our bodies looked to others and were worried about how vulnerable we were? Remember animals on all fours have all vital organs protects under them. Even Gorillas walk around on all fours, getting to protect everything that's important, from predators and attackers.
So that's a general summary of some of the things he talks about. There's  so much more and he gets so much deeper than I did. But God damn he makes a compelling argument.

I'm young (only 20) and so I've found comfort in being able to let these things (mj dmt mushies) be part of my life for right now. I totally understand the reasons one would stray away from it. I've viewed it as the more you mature in life the different your priorities become. I'm just in school, go to class, do some homework, get high and ponder life you know? I feel like there's phases in life when you can really take advantage of certain things such as this. If you ever get the choice between ayauasca and dmt I would recommend the ayauasca and I haven't even done it yet. DMT is harsh and intense. It's amazing, but from my understanding ayauasca is much more gentle and you can bring back a lot more information than from a DMT blast. I plan to make ayauasca at some point in my life! Good luck on the future endeavors.

This is my very first post on here so I'm really sorry if it's in the incorrect category! I'm curious, are you saying that the reason he has been given so much credit for his biblical interpretations is because the people that buy into it are lack intimacy and are stock full of testosterone?

He mentions about a million times in his lectures how men can't be anything without women and women can't be anything without men. "While Adam slept God took one of his ribs and closed up it's place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man me made into a woman and brought her to the man". I have a feeling you'd think of this as "oh of course there's a story where a man was needed to create woman". But that's not the correct way to think about things. Obviously Adam was made up of Eve. Eve was inside Adam and both were needed to make things happen. I'd be very careful of forming an opinion on YouTube titles labeling him as a right wing sexist. He's not and far from it. There's a lot to be learned and he's a smart cookie. I know everyone's not perfect but you can't assign him a label like that without actually researching him. If you have lectures that he gives where he has blatant misogyny in them, I'd love to take a look at them For me, I'm always open to anything. If there's evidence to support it. But just because he can talk about things so deeply and profoundly and in such a real way doesn't make him a misogynist, and just because he can do these things and it goes over peoples heads so they get offended and create animosity towards him doesn't mean that he's any of those labels. I'm not trying to come off as stand offish or anything, I absolutely love to hear a different perspective of things. That's exactly why I posted this! I'd love to hear what you think about this. Maybe what your views are? Thank you so much for the feedback though!

https://www.quora.com/Why-is-Jordan-Peterson-seen-as-misogynistic

Jordan also easily declaims social justice "warriors" in his run-in's with the staff at UofT and Waterloo University, and this contemporaneously jives with the rise of Donald Trump and the wide support given to resistance to science, immunizations, and other social activities that are just a bit more systematically complex than fits in a simpler motivational psychology such as is his specialty. I like SJW's and immunization which are both functionally related to health and well being in society.

Intentional or not, Jordan's impact on the modern social media is retrograde except for his guidance not to be lazy, i.e. the "cleanup your room" initiative which I hugely support.

You were doing pretty well, then you had to go and pull out an hominem didn't you?

Jordan Peterson is either playing a very hazardous game and needs to tread carefully so as not to be silenced when handing out his subtly-cryptic gems of golden verity, or, he is secretly espousing the very thing he condemned so ardently; the black truth. It's very tricky basing an entire philosophy on the back of 'the individual' and his crying antics on youtube only further facilitate my current observation.

"Women's proclivity to say no, more than any other force, has shaped our evolution into the creative, industrious, upright, large-brained (competitive, aggressive, domineering) creatures that we are." This sums up that entire link you posted. This is what I mentioned earlier when I said he says things deep and profound that go over people's heads and they get offended. When he talks about the proclivity to say no has shaped our evolution it totally has.We split from our common ancestor with chimps (partly) because we practiced hypergamy. While chimps were non discriminate maters. So human females would seek a man who had the best ability to generate, share, and be productive. Which is farrrr different from a female chimp going into heat and allowing any male access causing the strongest and most dominate males to leave their offspring. Humans found attractiveness in competence. So the proclivity to say no did shape our evolution. She mentions this and doesn't realize how important that is. This idea on such a grander scale and more profound idea and she's taking it way too simply.

"Blaming females for the way males are is ridiculous and that sentence alone shows an anger towards the opposite sex which is obvious enough, much less furthered by all his other anger as he goes on ranting about how men have to deal with the horrors of being rejected." Males evolved with females, we are the way we are because of females. Females also evolved with males and they are the way they are because of that. She says "he rants a lot about" and doesn't talk about the details that go deeper. She's just broadcasting the headline without getting the true story. "ranting about men being rejected?" He talks about how that goes into hypergamy, and that because men have a fear of being rejected (yes thats a real thing) it's shaped how males are. This was a really sad attempt at someone trying to be a feminist and falling short because of their lack of research and education on these topics. I'm not a die hard Jordan Peterson fan who will go to the ends of the Earth to defend him, but you have to give credit to true genuine intelligence and the profound perspective that he carries.

Logically i will disguise as a serpent hanging in a tree rather an elephant to approach the man.
I agree we really woke up in a negative way with that tree infecting us w/ malice, greed etc giving us deep burden, but in my part that tree isnt the real cause but rather the act.
One thing i wanna tackle, is God cannot lie according to His traits mentioned in the Whole bible, I can provide verses for this.
And when God said ye surely Die if yah eat that tree He aint fooling around for He his aware of his first creation who also has freewill just like us humans.
Adam did Die long before His flesh did and i think he already have that self-awareness even before he did the act of biting the fruit..

That's a really good way of putting it. So it was the act of eating the fruit which caused the fall into self awareness? Thus "hell" almost? So it would be representing humans doing the act of moving out of the "trees" away from the "snakes" as the representation of the act of taking a bite out of the apple. The trees and snake were parts of it, but we had to act it out before anything would truly happen? That's an amazing way to look at it, that Adam died long before his flesh did. I can't take that statement at face value. It means something so much deeper, to die before your flesh is the worst nightmare I could ever think of. Wow that's amazing thank you so much for sharing that. So since you've shown some knowledge on the bible.

I'm gonna take a swing and put this question out here and its something I've been wondering. If you believe in God as a physical being that will come back to Earth one day. And If God is all knowing than do people have free will? If someone knows exactly how things will turn out for you and every decision you will ever make, is that living a free will life? And if you have free will wouldn't that be saying God doesn't know what decision you'll make, say he's not all knowing? Or is there a deeper more intelligent way to look at that?

Thanks for sharing your belief, i also view women as one of the important parts of the creation from the same flesh as Adam.

The fruit might represent a human. Let the human fall and it becomes bruised and rots quickly just like an apple falling from a tree.

By picking the apple you preserve it. Then in eating the apple you enjoy what life has to offer; And that may be the metaphor, that in picking the apple Eve chose life and the rewards of incarnation rather than a more detached life that we see in those dedicated to spiritual pursuits.

And picking life is one of the most noble things one could do. There's downsides to life for sure, but there's a lot of experience to be had through them. There's nothing to gain in paradise because everything is perfect. We wouldn't have anything to do. It'd be maddening for human beings to not have anything to do. The richest thing you can earn for yourself is experience.

Just a disclaimer, I don't mean to sound aggrivated, but I was determined to read through that intro block, and I managed to, but it was subtly aggrivating. Maybe I need to smoke a bowl

For starters, because you once considered yourself an atheist, does not mean you've been in the mind of every athiest, we're a diverse bunch I assure you.

I also enjoyed the quick wit of Jordan Peterson's Bible series for a while, but I came to be bothered by some key aspects;

Most notably, he makes a lot of bald assertions. By that I mean, he says a lot of things as if they are facts, uncovered by the use of reason, when in reality they are possible explanations. It's a decent start, but you don't  get to just stop there and say "obviously this is what happened".
There could be thousands of equally possible explanations, how do we know which is correct?

Secondly, I consider his work as that of an apologist, not a scientist.

It is scientifically dishonest to start with predetermined beliefs in the Bible, and try to make the evidence fit what is written. This is called circular reasoning, or more specifically Begging the question .

It may seem controversial but There are things long been written in the BIBLE that contradicts some science theories (eg.) Ever expanding universe according to the bigbang. Even the last work of hawkins dismisses the infinite expansion which is good.

many scientists are  god fearing christians and cannot think clearly, so we need to be compassionately inclusive and endure the time it takes for data, and interpretation to make sense in their distorted minds. Often they speak or publish before they understand.

hierarchical interference from bible thumping rhythms impedes clear thinking.

I think of it as unfortunate baggage

The real baggage are the west founded churchianity that mines gold(tithing) from the bible belt and also often speaks or publish before they understand Leading to mass blurred thinking.

Every person is gifted with specialty according to his passion to contribute. Einstein with a bright mind didnt listen to the west churchianty hype during his time despite his Jewish background. I can imagine his burden  behind his belief in the Possibility of God.

The most beautiful thing we can experience is the Mysterious — the knowledge of the existence of something unfathomable to us, the manifestation of the most profound reason coupled with the most brilliant beauty. I cannot imagine a God who rewards and punishes the objects of his creation, or who has a will of the kind we experience in ourselves. I am satisfied with the mystery of life's eternity and with the awareness of — and glimpse into — the marvelous construction of the existing world together with the steadfast determination to comprehend a portion, be it ever so tiny, of the reason that manifests itself in nature. This is the basics of cosmic religiosity, and it appears to me that the most important function of art and science is to awaken this feeling among the receptive and keep it alive." -einstein

seems too much for one post
so I pick a couple of points

1) You say: "It’s so much better to be able to find a meaning to life"
so you would rather know the meaning of sex than experience it?
actually life is fine without 'meaning'

2)"The best way to learn something is to talk about it"
so you would rather talk about sex than experience it?
actually experiencing and learning go well together,
in fact its how everyone did their most important learning in childhood.

Pardon my brevity and directness, but since there seems to be such a basic confusion at both the beginning and end, I have skipped the middle.

Re: The psychological significance of the bible and psychedelics? An atheist finding "God" [Re: laughingdog]

I think entheogens like dmt and shrooms are doing fine without the bible and how they existed way before Christianity.

I am not against the bible (but against the church) and if you find good in it then why not, and i wouldn't say its perfect (or anything in the universe) because its not god.

Wish you the best of luck in your spiritual journey mate.
