straw causing problems?
    #2548821 - 04/11/04 05:11 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

contamination has never really been too much of a problem for me until lately. never before have i experienced contams during the spawn run or casing run. any contams usually took out a jar of spawn, and that was it.

in the past, i've grown on horse manure, pasteurized in a hot water bath at 160 F, for an hour, drained, and spawned with WBS. after the spawn run, which has always gone well, i'd case with a mix of coir, verm, and oyster shell. never was there a problem with contamination- the casing run would conclude and there would soon be mushrooms.

lately i've been working with straw, using otherwise the same methods, and have yet to succeed with it. every single attempt has been squashed by mold. the spawn run seems to occur normally, and the beds are summarily cased. a few days into the casing run, molds appear, and usually after dissecting the bed, it is found that the contamination goes all the way down through the straw, and quite possibly originated there.

i'm not sure what type of straw i'm using (it was commandeered from a nativity scene ) but it isn't wheat straw. it's a little darker in color, and has some impurities in it (leaves, nettles, flowers), but it's still straw. i've read that straw is more contam prone than other substrates, but this is ridiculous. every single attempt with the straw has failed, meanwhile every single grow without it has succeeded!

has anyone else experienced this? i'm going to lay off the straw for a while... do you think that's the problem? was it the particular straw i was using, or just straw in general?

maybe yr using hay instead of straw? hay ups the likelyhood of contams
also try to cut it up a little more
you can buy wheat straw real cheap from farms and feed stores
it needs to be 3 inches or less in length...
also many peeps recommend a presoak for straw to germinate endospores before pasturization

i'm not sure what kind of straw it is, but it isn't hay. i didn't chop it up, but i don't think that's the problem. i'll just stick to horse manure i think.

i think this is yr problem
every time one of my friends straw casings contaminated on the spawn run, it was b/c he hadn't chopped it up enough...
it took a little trial and error before he got it right (hopefully)
