Suggestions for rain gear? ($$) * 1
    #25446739 - 09/09/18 06:02 AM (5 years, 6 months ago)

I'm willing to drop a good chunk of change on some rainy-weather gear. My bike is my main means of transportation and I'm tired of wet ass. I bought some expensive REI rain gear three years ago, and although not worn much, they've lost their "sparkle".

I am really looking for pants/jacket that can be worn while biking for wet ass but also for walking through tall wet grass for mushrooms and don't want my wet pants to give away my intentions.

I'm not looking to drop 200 bucks or something for the set but if it keeps me warm and dry then it's hard to argue with that.

Thanks for any and all help.

Cabela's is good stuff. It will cost you though. I have some high ankle gortex boots. I can walk through a creek and my feet will be dry. Snow doesn't do shit.

NSA flame resist rain coats and pants are great. It's a safety apparel company.

This gear probably isn't great for riding bikes with, but if you are in the pouring rain, it will keep you dry.

Thank you all so much for the replies.

The stuff I've got now is North Face, REI,  Columbia and a kick ass pair of boots. I can wade through tidal pools and only worry about being swept out to sea. (Learned that the hard way). They're insulated and my feet sweat in below 0 and surprisingly, they've held up.

How long does most of this stuff last? Looking over everything for the season, it looks like 2-6 seasons is all the gas these things got in them. (Spring and fall seasons 1 to 3 years). Which sucks since a lot was pretty pricey to not be functional anymore.

What do you guys use for backpacks? I could use a nice camo "day bag" for riding around or short hikes / picking.

I'm gonna have to get an attachment for my bike as LC mentioned.. wet ass I think is gonna be a hard thing to protect from with anything.

My environments range from 25 go 65F, constant deluge of rains, some places occasionally being hit by waves (rare).

I like my filson coat. When I was a forest defender, I had one pair of tin pants that I wore. Those things are like armor.

I'd recommend Frogg Toggs

I've been using them for many years. At first they only had ultra-lightweight rain gear meant to wear over your clothes (but completely waterproof and breathable and SURPRISINGLY durable for how thin it was). I thought my ultralight frogg toggs would only last like one season.. they lasted 5.. and was only like $40. Now they have a huge array of shit from rain suits to waders and hardcore durable rain jackets and pants. Not a super well known brand and underrated IMO but they have a cult-like status with a lot of thru-hikers. Rain/wet weather gear is ALL they do... and it doesn't break the bank compared to a lot of other brands. I found a lot of even high dollar "rain gear" I've had over the years has performed less than optimal.. but I'm always bone dry in my toggs and not sweating my ass off.

Now I have a Highway Toadz? jacket I've had for about 10 years and it's still in perfect shape. That jacket would be a good choice for biking, as it's designed for cruising. That's actually why I originally got it. They have matching pants for all their jackets too.

or Zpacks or HMG if you want to spend $$$

I second the frogg toggs. The set I have is the thin stuff that goes on over your regular clothes.

I love my north face router backpack.

I would say this as well.  Not the sexiest stuff on the market but the quality is fantastic, it's functional, and the price is damn good compared to the Patagonia's, TNF, Arcteryx of the world.

Frog toggs rain jackets are good, i have a toad rage. DO NOT PUT FROG TOGGS IN THE DRYER.
The waterproofing will come off and you will essentiallu have a non waterproof windbreaker,

Frog toggs run large too..if youre ordering online,

Huk is expensive but about 10x better than Frogg toggs. Bibbs are 380 and waterproof parkas a re 380.
I do a fair amount of foul westher fishing in the open so its worth it to me.

Do you have fenders on your bike? Would be a much cheaper solution to wet ass syndrome while riding your bike.

Yeah, Frog Togs.  Going to Washington and Canada and what is what I am packing.  Freedom with no time frame is a wonderful thing but so is not being soaked and having something good to cover ones pack and tent.  I love the Pacific Northwest.  I hate January, am so antsy to get out and hike.
