how i define centrism is probably not the standard definition.  when i say someone who is "center" or "middle of the road" in reference to politics, it is someone who GENERALLY believes there is no one, sole approach to any given situation and/or series of situations.  it is someone who may support ideals of the right in one instance, and ideals of the left in another, and upon occasion intertwine the two sets of ideals, so that the most stable and beneficial outcome FOR ALL PERSONS/GROUPS involved is achieved. additionally, it might be someone that recognizes unilateral decision-making is rarely how matters are best handled.  it would be someone who does not issue knee-jerk emotional responses, yet considers the full, sweeping historical context of a situation into the issue(s) at hand and offers well-developed responses.

I would agree with most of this definition: centrism is support for the ideals that provide the greatest benefit rather than toeing a specific party line. Or at least it does in theory. The major manifestation of fundamentalist dogma within centrism would be the belief that the middle ground always holds the most stable and beneficial outcome for all. That's a bold statement that I personally don't believe to be true.

I'm reminded of that passage from Martin Luther King's letter from a Birmingham jail:
Quote:
First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice

Could I ask you: what right-wing positions do you think should be adopted, rather than the left wing approach? I'm what would be considered the extreme left so I don't think any of them should, but I'm willing to consider the possibility that I'm blinded by dogma so I'll listen to any argument you have. Because otherwise, if things are as I understand them, the centrist position isn't taking the best from both sides to achieve the greatest benefit - it's compromising the right with the wrong in order to achieve the greatest stability. Take the ACA for example - this was a centrist compromise, but it should be clear that a single payer system (the "left-wing" option) is superior. What reasons do you have in support of the belief that the middle ground is the best option?

Looking now at the part where you say "there is no one, sole approach to any given situation and/or series of situations", I have to say that this is not solely a property of centrism. Although authoritarian ideologies such as fascism and marxism display a certain rigidity in how they play out, this is not seen within anarchism. One common anarchist critique is that top-down models of government tend towards 'on-size-fits-all' solutions, whereas decentralization promotes unique solutions to individual problems. But I do agree that we would expect centrism to avoid the pitfalls of dogma as well.

The sentence "additionally, it might be someone that recognizes unilateral decision-making is rarely how matters are best handled" mostly touches on the same thread of thought, but I would take it a step further in that no political ideology embraces this statement to the extent found within anarchism. It's basically the founding concept behind the whole 'against rulers' things.

Finally, touching on the part about emotional knee-jerk reactions, I will have to disagree. I'm not a centrist, but you can be damned sure that I have a non-emotional argument behind every action I make and every ideal I support. On the other side, living in Canada (by and large a centrist nation) I can tell you that centrism is no immunity to irrationality in politics. This can be seen in reactions to sex ed in public schools, safe injection sites, and carbon taxes - to name a few. I'm sure that certain ideologies will see a greater percentage of irrational support *cough* right-wing *cough* but I think every political ideology is vulnerable to irrational support because it is more a human failure rather than a failure of ideological theory.

I can't read the article because I won't disable my adblocker, but judging solely from the title: does Trump really have any ground to stand on when it comes to criticizing others for horrible language and spewing lies?

Not at all, but Trump couldn't resist going after a guy who dedicates 2 hours everyday on CNN spewing propaganda about him.

Disgusting.

The fact that Donald Trump lobbied the Israeli government to bar elected officials from the US Congress is appalling. Not only are these congresswomen members of the house, which is responsible for appropriating funds that go to countries like Israel, they are American citizens. Donald Trump should always take the side of Americans in international disputes. Fuck him
