I'm not sure how accurate they are. I know the "Curve" is full of shit, it will claim you've burnt 90 cals in 5 minutes. That is virtually impossible. 50 cals in 5 minutes is believable. the treadmill says I end up burning about 125cals per mile @ 6.5mph

It varies wildly with BMI and body composition and it will be less and less as your body adapts to be more efficient.
Side note: just a little alcohol and all afterburn (calories burned at elevated level after exercise) pretty much halts.

Depends on the machine but that range sounds right for moderately intense cardio. Make sure you enter you weight if possible for slightly more accurate readings.

Fairly accurate. I don't really go to gyms because I don't like the scene, so 97% of my exercise is outside and alone, but in the past when I would go to a gym if the machine said I burnt 100cals I would count it at 80cals just to be safe.
Once you get to know your body and get in better shape you will probably not even worry about counting calories unless you're "cutting" for some fitness thing, just focus more on the intensity of your workouts. It's rather freeing to just be able to focus on the intensity of your workout, sometimes keeping tabs on all the machinery, stats, etc, can take our minds off of going hard in the paint.
Also, don't compare yourself to someone that has been working out for a while. Plenty of pics show how long it takes to build muscle, those that have a good bit of it have been working towards that physique for a while, growth doesn't happen overnight but once you begin to see it you'll want to keep moving forward with your progression.
If you're on an elliptical for joint/knee reasons there's plenty of research which states that running isn't bad on your joints, it makes them stronger. But do what you will, just don't quit on it!

When I go hard as possible, the machine says I'm doing 15 calories per minute. It only shows maybe 10-12 calories per minute if I'm just pacing myself and not going as hard.
Seems about right.

I just ran 4.6 miles in 36 minutes and 15 seconds. I'm logging my runs on an app called Runkeeper. PM me if you want to compare runs.

I lifted some heavy rocks for a bit yesterday out in this park where I like to hang out and I'm feeling it a bit today. Haven't been hiking as far there lately but I get in a few km when I go. Been trying to get back into chin-ups but I struggle to do 6.

I cover about 20 miles a day on the stationary bike. It's my preferred form of cardio since I can read books whilst I'm on it and thus kill two birds with one stone.

I checked out the pool at my school yesterday
its huge and empty and clean
I should be able to go most days after class. I started getting back into it this summer and by the end of it I felt like I could compete. I usually go in on an edible and pretend a shark is chasing me while I listen to music on a waterproof ipod shuffle. I used to be alright as a kid on the swim team but recently I've been meticulously tweaking all of my strokes for efficiency and posture. But at the same time I dont really look at the clock and I just focus on exerting as much force as I can against the water. No better work out. All of your muscles. Strengthens joints and its all cardio.

This was three years ago (31), when I was in peak condition: .
Since then, I've been to hell and back, lost a lot of muscle and gained a lot of fat. I didn't take any pics for obvious reasons.
However this is me a few minutes ago. Another six months on the path I'm on now and I reckon I can exceed my previous peak: .
Hopefully some inspiration for y'all.

Thanks for this, JSB. It's really good to see someone who has been able to largely maintain AND rev up for some improvement. Quote:

Ellipticals are really good if someone's still in the overweight phase of their fitness path
Ergs too and rowing is a stupid good workout.
